Chapter 1 - Girl in the Snow

[Winter, Year 1608]

A tiny barefooted girl in a worn out white patient uniform struggles through the fierce snowfall, leaving a trail of footprints behind.

Her long, white hair blends in with the snow, flowing with the wind that blows towards the girl's face. She slightly squints her golden, cat-like eyes, using her right arm to block the strong wind and snow from her face.

She has no idea where she was, or why she was here.

The moon provides the sole light source, shining ever so brightly. Ahead, two dim lights shines through the falling snow.

The girl huffs, her hot breath creating small clouds in the freezing cold. She glances at the two shadows before she takes one final step, and collapses on the soft snow with a thud.

In a dark room lay a sleeping girl.

She slowly opens her eyes in a daze. Blinking a few times, she stares at the ceiling before sitting up, observing her surroundings.

The girl sniffs, her stomach growling as a delicious, pungent aroma snuck through the cracks of the door.

She climbs off the large bed, peaking her little head out the door, the lights blinding her for a few seconds.

Walking down the stairs, she is greet by two strangers: a woman wearing an apron and a man sitting at the dinner table.

"Hey sweetie, are you alright? Come here and have some curry!" The woman smiles warmly, gesturing her hand to come over.

"We found you collapsed on the snow. You okay?" The man asks worriedly.

The girl nods, unsure who these people are. She concluded that for now, they are good people because they not only saved her, but also offered her yummy food to eat.

The woman deactivated the imbued stone, which emitted the fire for cooking and plated the dishes.

The girl gobbled down the curry and orange juice like a starved, dehydrated wolf.

"Ah, right. I'm Elizabeth Revs, and this is my husband, David Revs. What's your name?"

"?" The girl tilts her head, confused.

She understands what she's saying, but she does not know her name. After some thought, the girl replies, "I don't know."

Worried, but not wanting to pry any further, the married couple decides to first name the girl.

"Yuki. How does that sound? We found you in the snow, and your hair is as white as the snow outside. Do you like it?"

Yuki nods, feeling warmth in her heart.

"Honey, I didn't know you had such a good naming sense! You almost named our son—"

"It's fineee, we avoided that by naming him Xavier didn't we?" Mr. Revs interrupted, laughing.

He adds, "Yuki, we have a ten-year-old son, Xavier. He's probably two years older than you."

Mrs. Revs walks up to the girl, ruffling her soft, white hair.

"For the time being, why not stay with us if you have nowhere to go? Are you okay with that, honey?" She looks at her husband who, in turn, gives her a slight nod of approval.

"Of course! We can't leave her to freeze out there. You can sleep in the guest room from now on."

"…thank you." Yuki mutters.

The Revs smiled warmly at the quiet girl. The cozy cabin felt a little livelier with one more person.

The girl in the snow, Yuki, has found people who are willing to take care of her and a place she could call home.
