"This is highly inappropriate—" Kavan sputtered, his face reddening.


"Inappropriate?" Hyrin laughed, harsh and mocking. "You want to talk about inappropriate? Let's talk about how you proposed marriage to a woman you clearly don't respect. How you came here thinking she'd just roll over and accept because you're a lord and she's 'nobody.'"


"You didn't have to say it. It's written all over your face." Hyrin's wind whipped harder now, making Kavan's robes billow violently. "You don't want a wife. You want a possession. Something pretty to put on display while you go about your important business in the Archives."
