Chapter 22 - Disaster

"Hello, nice to meet you. My name is Dr. Hayden. Perhaps your Eevee recognizes me."

As Dr. Hayden approached, he introduced himself.

Huh?

Kai only noticed the newcomer when he spoke, freezing for a moment.

That outfit…

And that comment about Eevee recognizing him…

"Hello, I'm Kai. Are you from the Pokémon Center?" Kai inquired, simultaneously signaling Eevee to pause its training.

"Vee?"

Hearing the call, Eevee skidded to a halt and ran over quickly.

At the same time, it eyed the suddenly appearing Dr. Hayden with confusion.

A moment later, Eevee let out a happy cry.

Clearly, as the man said, Eevee had seen this doctor before.

Kai suddenly understood. "So it's Dr. Hayden. Thank you for treating Eevee. Its injuries have healed well."

"That's my duty," Dr. Hayden said.

Then he smiled, crouched down to look at Eevee, and continued, "From appearance, I can tell this Eevee was well-cared for early on. It's full of spirit and vitality. And this coat color… it must often drink Moomoo Milk, right?"

"Yes," Kai nodded calmly, though inwardly surprised. He could tell its diet from coat color?

Also, did Eevee's coat color really differ from others'…

Sorry, Eevee.

"Haha, actually, it's hard for ordinary people to spot such subtle differences," Dr. Hayden said. "We've studied it systematically."

"By the way, while treating Eevee, I often detected medicinal compounds on its body. Compared to the wounds, you apply too much. For minor injuries, it's fine to skip medicine. For Pokémon, slight bruises can exercise their self-healing ability."

"Vee?!" Hearing this, Eevee, who'd been approaching Dr. Hayden, suddenly took a step back, nearly baring its teeth.

"Thank you. I'll keep that in mind." Though unsure why the Pokémon Doctor was sharing so much, Kai accepted the advice. He often applied medicine during training purely out of worry that injuries might worsen.

After hearing this, Eevee looked at Kai in despair again.

What was this…? Eevee felt the world was against it.

After a brief exchange, Dr. Hayden stood. Even he, a Pokémon Doctor, recognized the merit of Kai's training regimen. This comprehensive approach saved time and promoted balanced growth.

"Dr. Hayden, don't you need to be at the Pokémon Center?" Kai asked curiously.

"Oh, it's my day off." Dr. Hayden gestured to his white coat. "No clean clothes at home, so I wore this. I'm heading in for overtime soon anyway, so no need to change."

"Are you from Lavender Town?" Kai asked, surprised.

"Do I not look it?" Dr. Hayden laughed. "Speaking of which, you're a new Trainer, right? You must attend Viridian No. 1 High? Which family are you from?"

Dr. Hayden's questions flowed endlessly. Kai had time, so he answered each one.

"Well, I registered this summer. My grandfather… everyone calls him Old Man Henry."

"Oh, you're Old Henry's grandson?" Dr. Hayden was surprised.

"You know my grandfather?"

"The old man plays chess very well. I often watch him play in the square," Dr. Hayden said.

Kai was also surprised. His eyes lit up. Since we've been chatting, why not ask something useful? Like Breeders, Pokémon Doctors were certified experts in Pokémon care—half-expert breeders themselves.

"Dr. Hayden, when you examined Eevee at the Center, how was its condition? As a new Trainer, nurturing… isn't really my forte." Kai offered an amiable smile, hoping for some professional insight.

"I see." Dr. Hayden nodded, admiring how Kai had nurtured the newborn Eevee to this level. He also noted their strong bond, which was valuable.

"Actually, Eevee is developing very well in all aspects…"

"But there's still room for improvement."

"Is Eevee still drinking Moomoo Milk?"

"Yes, and it's also eating the general solid food from the Dawn Group." Kai said. "Is there a problem?"

"No problem. But is there a special reason you're training so hard?" Dr. Hayden asked.

"We want to compete against the new Trainers in Vermilion City." Kai said casually—no shame in that.

"In that case, the food you're providing isn't the optimal choice for strength development." Dr. Hayden thought for a moment.

"But you don't need major changes. You could replace regular Moomoo Milk with 'Nomel Berry Blend' or 'Pinap Berry Blend.' Also, the 'Fresh Moomoo Milk' from Miltank during lactation—Eevee doesn't need it daily. With your current training intensity, about three bottles a week would suffice."

"Eevee is in its growth stage. These berry blends can strengthen its body and supplement micronutrients, while Fresh Moomoo Milk subtly improves constitution and helps absorb training results more efficiently. This way, even higher training intensity is manageable."

"I'm not a professional Breeder, so this is just advice."

Berry Blends were nutritious products formulated with special Berries. Fresh Moomoo Milk was the essence from lactating Miltank. Both had higher nutritional value than ordinary milk and even restored stamina. Of course, the price was…

Kai coughed, cutting off that thought.

The reason was simple: one word—poor.

Moreover, such high-end nutrients required long-term use; a month wouldn't show significant effects.

The cost-effectiveness was lower than regular Moomoo Milk!

Kai had to consider carefully.

Dr. Hayden smiled slightly, noticing Kai's embarrassment, but it wasn't his concern. He'd just found Kai interesting and chatted since they were from the same town.

They didn't talk long. Dr. Hayden soon left for his overtime shift, encouraging Kai and Eevee before departing.

"So that doctor is from Lavender Town too?"

Kai had no prior memory of Dr. Hayden but didn't dwell on it, treating it as a small interlude during training.

He considered some of the advice. But improving nutrition quality… Kai was truly powerless.

Unless he and Eevee won the Rising Star Cup prize money.

But after participating, wouldn't they urgently need those nutrients anyway?

It was a complete loop.

"Regardless, let's continue training." Kai called out.

"Vee!"

......

With just over 30 days until the Rising Star Cup, Kai and Eevee's training entered its most intense phase.

Kai desperately wanted to improve Eevee's training efficiency because, besides the current three focuses, they had another crucial task—

Currently, Eevee couldn't counter Ghost-type moves. During this time, Kai had to devise a method.

Time…

Was fleeting.

Half a month passed.

No matter how grueling, Kai and Eevee persisted.

However, simultaneously, at the Viridian City Trainer Association branch, a sudden change occurred in the Disaster Warning Center.

"Preliminary assessment: the Secret Realm scale is very small."

"Predicted Secret Realm location confirmed: Lavender Town coordinates…"

"Confirmed again. Issuing a Class D disaster alert."
