Chapter 2 - Stranger

Tadeo opens his eyes, finding his reflection in the ceiling. At that precise moment, he sees restraints around his hands and ankles, and a gag covering his mouth in the reflection. After hearing the sound of a door opening, he looks toward the three men in suits.

— You finally wake up — says the older man in front of him. Tadeus shakes his body in an attempt to free himself — Calm down, don't rush — the man says. He gestures to the men at the door, who leave the room — If you're wondering how I found you, it was thanks to your TV show. A total coincidence! If you had never returned to the country, maybe I wouldn't have seen you — he says, smiling. Then, the pair of men return with a young woman, just like him, tied up. Tadeus widely opens his eyes within a deep sense of fear.

The young woman tearfully begs to be let go, insisting that she doesn't have the money to pay a ransom, but receives no response from the man. Tadeus looks down and begins to sob.

— What do you want from me? — she asks, fearing the worst. – Why are we here? No one can pay a ransom if you bring him here too.

The older man makes another gesture, at which the two men untie both hostages and remove Tadeus' gag.

— I have been looking you for a long time, but once I knew about you, it wasn't that difficult to find out more. It took only four hours to get everything about your life - He says, aiming his gaze at Tadeus - Well... another twelve hours to get your DNA and your sister's, just to make sure.

— What are you talking about? — Yenedith asks.

The man approaches and places his hands on each of Tadeus' shoulders. — I finally found you, my children, — He says with a smile and gives him a hug. Tadeus is still confused, but tries to stay focused. — There's no denying that your mother did everything she could to separate you from me — he says, distancing himself from the hug. — She changed your first and last names before leaving the city. I thought it would be impossible, but here you are.

— Get away from me! — Yenedith shouts when she sees him approaching to hug her. Instead, Tadeus gets near her and holds her to make her feel safer.

— But I'm Edwin, Edwin Singer, your father! — the man says with a feigned expression.

— I don't have a dad. Our dad died — Tadeus says, looking at Yenedith as if reassuring her.

— It's not possible that you don't remember me. You were twelve years old when your mother decided to abandon me and take you with her — Edwin says. Yenedith looks at her brother, confused. — You weren't even born yet. I'll always regret not having seen you born — the man says to his daughter.

— Is that true? — She asks.

— Don't believe anything he tells you — Tadeus answers, and directs a few words to Edwin — We are not your children; we don't know you. "

— Are you going to keep lying? — the man says, taking a photo of himself beside his wife and young son out of his jacket pocket — You had just turned two. This was taken on your birthday.

— Is he really our father? — Yenedith asks, recognizing her mother in the photo — Why is he kidnapping us if we're supposedly his family? — she asks not receiving a response from his brother.

— Bring him to my office — Edwin orders.

The pair of men take Tadeus by the arms and drag him, due the still poor coordination in his legs. The room is spacious with a desk in the center and bookcases completely full each side. — You should know that I manage several quite lucrative businesses that aren't entirely legal — Edwin says — Certain substances and some international transferences, that kind of business. The DEA's been up my ass lately, and I prefer to be prepared, to have a backup route.

— What does that have to do with me? — Tadeus asks — I don't care about your businesses.

– Oh, yes, you do — Edwin replies — I know you're a very determined, resourceful, and honest man. That's what your entire career as an investigative journalist demonstrates. You've worked so hard to bring certain truths to light that you even earned your own television show.

— Is this all for that TV show? — Tadeus asks — I'm not a detective.

— What I need is for you to infiltrate the Animal's organization and use your investigative skills to find their exit routes before the DEA blocks ours.

— Are you asking me to gain the trust of some... animal?

— You know him as Alexander, the millionaire investor and heir to the Strauss family – Edwin says — Win him over, trap him, trick him, whatever you wanna call it. I'm only interested in the results you bring me, and in the meantime, I'll make sure your little sister and the blind elder you adore so much are okay.

— Why don't you leave us alone? — Tadeus asks upon hearing this. He hadn't expected to find out now that his grandmother is also in danger — We were not looking for you, and we don't want your money either. You can ask one of your men to do that.

— There's no one else I could entrust with this task — Edwin says.

— What makes you think you can trust me?

— If the Animal finds out you're my lost son, what do you think will happen? Edwin comments, walking around the desk. He stands up in front of Tadeus and says — We both have the most to lose in this situation.

— We're not familiar — Tadeo says — I can say I don't know you.

— The blood is enough for you to be found with a bullet in the head at the entrance of my house — Edwin says — I would be sorry to lose you again, but what about your sister? Are you sure you want to leave her alone?

At that moment, Tadeus gets up from his chair and heads for the office exit. He walks around the mansion, escorted by men who lead him to his sister, who is sitting in the kitchen with his grandmother and a woman is serving them something to eat.

Everyone runs to hug and kiss each other through tears, trying to process everything that's happening. Daisy curses the day her daughter met Edwin, which raises questions in Yenedith.

— I thought our father had died in a fire, that's why there were no photos of him because everything burned down. Why did you lie to me?

— Your mother always wanted to forget that horrible past with your father. She wanted you to grow up without wounds — Daisy says — I always advised her to tell you the truth, but she flatly refused. She insisted that if you didn't know him, you wouldn't miss him.

— I don't think that man is our father — Yenedith says. Her eyes begin to fill with tears again — They kidnapped me when I was about to the bus. They kidnapped me in the middle of the street, in broad daylight, Tadeus! — She sobs. Her brother tries to comfort her with a hug and pats the back of her head until she stops crying.
