Chapter 28 - Chapter 28- Gambling is bad (4)

Clang!

The metal shutter dropped with a loud clanging noise.

The lender's eyes widened.

"Wh-what are you brats doing?!"

He stood up abruptly as a bead of sweat formed on his forehead.

Light's lips curled into a smirk.

He hopped onto the wooden table and sat down on it, resting his arms on his knees like Spider-Man.

"You see..."

He looked down at the lender.

"We have much more important work to do after we deal with this."

His eyes narrowed.

"So make it quick and get the house papers out."

The lender took a step back.

"You..."

He stammered.

"No... No..."

His expression hardened.

"Who do you think you brats are?!"

The lender took a brave step forward.

And then-

Smack!

"Agh!"

He yelled out in pain as Light's hand struck his cheek.

Light sighed.

"I hate this as much as you do..."

He stared directly into the lender's eyes.

"Just give us the papers or else..."

Behind him, Jamie cracked his knuckles.

The lender's eyes darted between them.

He finally realized something.

This middle-aged man was no match for these youngsters.

"But..."

His voice trembled.

"I'll get in huge trouble if I do."

Light raised an eyebrow.

"You working under someone?"

The lender hesitated.

"Yes..."

Light shrugged.

"Come on. They're not gonna know."

He pointed toward him.

"It's only one house."

The lender shook his head.

"They're gonna know."

He swallowed.

"They have a camera set up in this office."

The group's eyes widened.

All three immediately looked around the room.

Their eyes scanned the walls.

The ceiling.

The shelves.

Then-

Light noticed something in the corner.

A small white CCTV camera.

A red light glowed from its center.

Light stared at it.

"They're watching us?"

The lender nodded.

"Yes."

His nervous expression slowly disappeared.

"They're very dangerous people..."

A confident smirk formed on his lips.

"You're all gonna get killed."

POW!

Light's fist crashed into the lender's face.

The man's body was sent tumbling backward.

His confident smirk disappeared instantly.

"Shut up and give me the key."

Light pointed toward the metal locker beside him.

Blood trickled from the lender's nose as he looked up at Light.

For a few seconds, he remained silent.

Then-

He smirked again.

The lender reached into his pocket.

He pulled out a long brown key.

He slowly placed it into Light's palm.

"You're all getting involved in something sinister..."

His eyes narrowed.

"Welcome to Heaven."

His eyelids began to droop.

Then finally-

They shut.

The impact from the earlier punch had finally taken effect.

Light stared at him.

"Heaven?"

He scratched his head.

"Is he on drugs or something?"

Meanwhile, Daeho suddenly jumped up and down in excitement.

His usually tired-looking eyes had brightened.

"Open! Open!"

Jamie smiled.

He placed an arm around Daeho's shoulders.

"Finally smiling, huh?"

Daeho looked up at him.

A genuine smile remained on his face.

Light turned back toward the locker.

"Fine, fine!"

He held up the key.

"I'll open it."

He inserted the long key into the keyhole.

Click.

Light turned it.

Squeak!

The metal door slowly opened.

A pile of documents tumbled out.

"Woah!"

Light's mouth dropped open.

He looked at the countless documents scattered across the floor.

"They sure did a lot of bad business here..."

He crouched down and began looking through them.

But then his eyes narrowed.

"Wait."

He looked around.

"There seems to be no money here."

Jamie stood beside him and leaned down.

"That guy did tell us he worked under someone..."

He looked toward the CCTV camera.

"They must have it."

Jamie raised his hand and waved toward the camera.

"Hello, shitheads."

The camera continued recording.

Meanwhile, Light continued rummaging through the documents.

After a few seconds-

He found what they had come for.

Light pulled out a document and stood up.

He turned toward Daeho.

Then he held the document out to him.

"Don't gamble again."

Daeho froze.

He stared at the document.

His eyes began to tremble.

Then tears streamed down his face.

But this time...they were tears of relief.

"Thank you..."

His voice cracked.

"Guys... Thank you."

A few moments later...

The four of them returned to the university after everything that had happened.

They headed straight back to the abandoned computer classroom.

Magg's Digital Den

The door suddenly flung open.

Light and the others barged into the room with the documents in hand.

"Yo, Magg!"

Jamie raised the documents.

"Got the house back!"

Daeho stepped inside behind him.

He looked toward Magg.

"Thank you, Magg."

But Magg didn't celebrate.

Instead, he looked at them warily.

"Are you guys seriously happy right now?"

The smiles on their faces faded.

Their eyes narrowed in confusion.

Magg pointed toward Daeho.

"We still haven't recovered all the money you gambled away, idiot."

Daeho looked down.

For a moment, he remained silent.

Then his head lifted up with a warm smile.

His eyes were genuinely genuine.

"Magg... It's okay."

His smile remained.

"It was my fault."

"I don't want to drag you all into more of this mess."

For a moment, the lender's words flashed through his mind.

You're all getting involved in something sinister...

Daeho's expression became more serious.

"Let's not get greedy."

He looked toward Magg.

"And don't worry."

A small smile returned.

"I'm gonna pay your fee."

Magg stared at him.

Then he took a step forward.

He lifted his hand and placed it on Daeho's shoulder.

"You realised your fault and controlled your greed."

Magg smiled faintly.

"That's all the payment I needed."

Daeho's eyes widened.

Meanwhile

Light and Jamie stared at the two of them.

They looked at each other.

Then back at Magg.

A thought simultaneously crossed their minds.

Why are we the only ones being charged on top of helping him with all this?!

But somewhere far away from their university...

A monitor displayed a recording.

The footage showed Light and his group inside the illegal money-lending office.

Their confrontation with the lender.

The CCTV camera.

The documents.

Everything.

Someone was watching.

A voice came from the darkness.

"Get rid of whoever those idiots are..."
