Chapter 1 — The Boy Who Survived**

The sky broke on the night Kael turned fifteen.

Not metaphorically—truly. A jagged crack tore across the heavens like shattered glass, spilling streams of pale-blue light that rained down upon the valley of Ardentreach. The villagers fled in terror, but Kael stood frozen, watching the impossible unfold above him.

He had always felt different. Restless. As if something inside him waited for a signal only he could hear. When the crack widened and a single shard of glowing crystal fell toward him, he knew that signal had finally come.

The impact knocked him off his feet and set the world ablaze with light. When the dust settled, Kael staggered up, gasping. The crystal—now dissolved—had melted into his skin like fire and frost at once. Marks, blue as lightning, spread across his arm.

And then the voice spoke.

"Bearer chosen. Ember awakened."

Kael spun around, heart pounding. "Who said that?"

"Not voice. Memory. Echo. You carry what was lost."

Before he could make sense of it, a roar shook the valley. From the crack in the sky descended a creature like living shadow—horned, many-eyed, its presence crushing the air itself. A Riftspawn.

The villagers had told legends of these monsters, but no one truly believed them.

The monster lunged.

Kael raised his arm in instinctive defense—and a surge of blue fire erupted from his palm, spiraling like a living serpent and blasting the creature backward. He stared at his own hand, breathless.

"Power unmatched," the echo whispered. "But even embers burn out."

The Riftspawn recovered, shrieking.

Kael didn't know how he did it. He didn't know why the sky had shattered, or why he alone had been chosen. But as the creature charged again, something inside him clicked—fear and destiny twisting into resolve.

He planted his feet. Lifted his marked arm. Let the fire answer.

The night illuminated with a brilliant flash.

When dawn arrived, the valley lay silent, the crack in the sky still glowing faintly overhead.

And Kael's journey—along with the first spark of a war between realms—had only just begun.
