Chapter 14 - A Debt Paid With Blood

The explosion sent him rolling through the forest floor, the energy released from it sickening him to his very bones.

He broke through trees as his momentum slowly dissipated, but the essence of life unfamiliar to his body corroded it from the inside. Once he finally stopped Beleth a high pitched ringing overcame his ears. He tried taking a breath but his stomach had other plans. The boy began to vomit uncontrollably.

His eyes overrun by tears he could barely see anything, regardless he began to crawl on the ground until he felt a hard gruff surface that went high above him. For a moment the boy rested there, wiping his eyes allowed him to see that he was now far away from Silistra and Conrad.

I have to run. He thought as he tried slowing his breathing down. Around five meters to his left a small blue sphere passed catching his attention. Beleth forced himself to get up and started limping in the direction of the sphere. Thank you mister Conrad.

Running was painful, he whimpered as he felt his innards readjusting. Bear it. It wasn't long before the limping began to disappear and he felt some heat in his legs. I can bear it. Just then something crashed behind him. Whatever it was it sent a powerful shockwave that caused him to stumble.

Keep moving forward, he thought as he sped up his pace.

Some time had passed, and no one was chasing him, in the distance he could see the walls of the city.

The small sphere that had illuminated his way had gotten pretty dim. The thing couldn't even keep a consistent course, the weaker it got, the more it started to lose its direction, sometimes strafing left or right. Then without any warning it disappeared.

His heart skipped a beat. The boy lost focus and tripped on a branch hidden underneath some snow.

The fall didn't phase him at all, Did something happen to mister Conrad?? He thought as he turned back, I should go help him… Wait, what am I going to do exactly? Cold sweat ran down his forehead. If I go back I am bound to make things worse. Moreover it would be for nothing. He got back up and tried taking a step. But I have no idea where to go now. His breathing accelerated. What should I do?! I cannot abandon him, he gave up everything for me. The boy started to lose balance. I cannot do this! He grabbed his chest and began panting, an antler began to break through the center of his forehead. Someone please tell me what to do. Noir… Father. "Anyone please… Help me!"

"No one is going to help you, Monster." A familiar voice struck him as two silhouettes began to take shape in the distance.

The boy immediately recognized them as he had met both prior that day. The woman who had lost her daughter and the man with the little girl were standing before him.

"Why… are." The boy tried to speak but words simply could not escape his mouth, he stumbled back and fell on the ground. Left powerless he could only stare into the cold eyes of the two adults before him.

"Let us say we did not trust Silistra would go through with your execution." The old woman started. "So we had planned to kill you tonight in your cell."

"But Conrad ruined that plan." The man continued. "Luckily this woman here had been hunting your kind for over forty years." He said as he pulled out a long knife from behind his waist.

The old woman stood still as the man approached. Beleth turned his back to them and started crawling away as tears erupted from his eyes and he began sobbing.

It was not long before the man grabbed his leg and pulled him back. He then stabbed the knife into the boy's left shoulder. The antler on Beleth's forehead began to grow even more as the boy yelled in pain.

Suddenly the violent winds that had been blowing all evening stopped. The clouds above moved away as the moon once again started illuminating the forest. Silence overcame the wood, silence broken only by the cries of Beleth.

"What strange weather we have today. " The woman said a safe distance away from the two of them. "Anyway, Toden, I think you should just finish him off. Do not relish too much in the suffering of monsters lest you want to become one." she said coldly, not noticing the dancing shadows around her.

"You are absolutely right." He said as he twisted the knife before pulling it out of Beleth's shoulder. "Also now that the wind is gone, his screams will cause quite the commotion." He looked back at Beleth. "Any last words monster?"

"I want to live." Beleth whimpered weakly.

"So did my brother you piece of shit!!" he swung the knife aiming at the back of the boy's skull, however the blade never reached.

From both Beleth's shadows black maws emerged.
