Chapter 5 - THE SHELL

[Felix POV]

'Ow…...what the hell happened?'

The last thing he remembered was going home from the nursing home, then bang! A flash of white and pain and a cold feeling.

'Crap, did I get in an accident? Am I in a hospital?'

As any adult living alone, Felix's first thought was how he was going to handle the money issue, which although he had medial insurance from his job for his one of its major drawbacks were the pay checks which was necessary to pay the rent, however those thoughts quickly vanished as he realised there are more pressing issues as his awareness slowly returned in fragments.

There was no light, only constant darkness, yet he felt as though he was surrounded by warmth, which gave him an oddly comforting feeling. His body felt weak and awkward as they moved through the thick, soup-like layer, only to come into a hard surface.

'Is this a wall?'

He tried to move in another direction only to be met by the same obstruction.

'I'm… trapped'

'I need to escape'

That wasn't just a thought; that was an instinct that clouded his reasoning. With all his strength, he pushed against the wall, but his limbs were still weak and uncomfortable, so he was unable to budge it.

This exercise, though profoundly tiring, left him with a sense of extreme frustration as he resolved to try harder after taking a well-deserved rest .... wait ….

'Surrounded by walls… darkness… soup that wasn't suffocating him… what kind of place is this?'

Then an understanding of his situation surfaced, cold and horrifying

'Egg… I'm inside an egg'

That realisation hit him like a truck(metaphorically), and the implications crashed down on him one after another.

'I.... died'

'Wait, no… I have a body… I'm alive'

'This is an… egg'

'Did I reincarnate?'

'Egg…. I'm not human'

'God… what am I?'

Off the top of his head, he could only think of two species with hard shells: reptiles and birds. He shuddered from the thought. Felix moved as he tried to get a feel for what species he was as he moved his weak limbs.

'Limbs… I guess that rules out snakes, which only leaves birds and lizards.

Countless possibilities rushed to his mind.

'What if…. he was like a chicken egg?'

'What if they let him live only to make him into fried chicken?'

'What if they crack the egg open for like an omelette?'

His downward spiral into full-blown panic mode lasted for quite some time before he decided it wasn't worth tormenting himself to madness with his imagination.

As a nurse, he knew enough biology to understand that if anyone should crack the shell from outside, it would be bad news for him.

'Need to get out of here ASAP'

Fuelled by manic determination, he redoubled his efforts to break through the shell at all costs… yet the wall remained unbudgeable.

Not discouraged, he tried again and again, only to make no progress. No, he did make very tiny progress only when he pushed against a different area of the wall, though it didn't break and slowly expand it.

'Well, at least there was progress'

Exhausted from his ordeal, Felix dozed off only to reawaken after what felt like an eternity and feel something that surprised him.
