Chapter 43 - Chapter 43

After breakfast, Daguo came to my bedroom, took out that small camera, and then connected it to his phone with a data cable.

"I'll send it to you on QQ in a bit. I don't know how the footage turned out. Your watch screen is too small, not sure if you'll be able to see clearly..." Daguo said after putting away both the camera and his phone, then started packing his schoolbag.

"Are we going out?" Seeing him pack his bag, I couldn't help but ask.

"I'm heading back first, so Auntie won't feel awkward when she comes back later. Giving her some time to calm down is good too..." Hearing my question, Daguo replied while taking out his phone again and handing it to me.

I saw it was his WeChat, and on it was a message from Mom to him.

"Daguo, Auntie hopes what happened last night won't happen again. Don't let there be a next time. Auntie will act as if nothing happened..." It was just a short line, all referring to herself as "Auntie," as if deliberately emphasizing the boundary to Daguo.

"Expected... I'm off now... Remember, don't give anything away. You know nothing..." Daguo said, patting my shoulder as he slung his backpack over his shoulder.

Right now, I actually hoped Daguo would leave quickly, so Mom wouldn't be afraid to come back. Besides, I also wanted to see what exactly happened in that video.

Daguo rode off on his bike. According to him, Teacher An would be back in the afternoon.

After Daguo left, the house suddenly became quiet.

I sat on the edge of the bed, picked up my smartwatch, and saw the file Daguo was sending me. I started receiving it.

The file was large, so it needed to download bit by bit.

But before the download finished, my smartwatch rang, interrupting the download.

I saw it was Mom calling. I took a deep breath, composed myself, and answered Mom's call.

"Xiao Yang, are you guys up?" Mom's voice came through after I answered. It was noisy and bustling on her end; she really was on a busy street in the city.

"We're up... just finished breakfast..." I replied, pretending everything was completely normal.

"Oh, go out for a walk after you finish studying later. Don't stay cooped up at home all the time..." After hearing me, Mom paused briefly, but her voice sounded quite normal.

"I won't go out. Daguo said he had something else to do today. He's already gone back, can't hang out with me today..." My reply was pretty seamless, I think.

"Oh, that's fine too... Mom will come back after buying some things..." After hearing me, Mom paused briefly again before replying.

After hanging up, I couldn't help but let out a sigh of relief. Mom's call seemed ordinary, but it was actually a "reconnaissance" to see if Daguo was still at our house.

If he was home, Mom would probably take a while longer to come back. If Daguo had left, she'd probably return soon.

It seems my guess was right. Mom was definitely avoiding Daguo, and also trying to avoid any slip-ups in front of me.

I continued downloading the video while looking out the window, wondering how long it would take for Mom to return.

Seeing Daguo and Mom's reactions made me even more curious about what happened last night. Daguo's vague explanation earlier was practically useless, only fueling my curiosity more.

The video finished downloading, but I resisted the urge to open it immediately. I still had to review my lessons.

I forced down that curiosity and started reviewing, taking a while to get into the right headspace.

Just as I was getting into the study groove, the sound of the door opening came from outside. I turned to look, and sure enough, it was Mom coming back.

Although Mom was walking towards the courtyard, her steps held a hint of hesitation, as if afraid Daguo might still be home.

When Mom entered carrying her shopping bags, I quickly got up and went to greet her.

"Mom..." I took a shopping bag from her hand and greeted her.

"Mom can handle it, you go study. I'll make something delicious for lunch..." Mom didn't let me take the bag, saying this while slightly out of breath.

But she didn't dare face me or meet my eyes.

Mom was wearing a tracksuit and sports shoes.

Although she was clearly made up, there was a trace of weariness on her face, and her eyes held fatigue.

It seemed Mom must have slept very late last night and wasn't in great spirits.

Mom went into the kitchen and put the things in the fridge. Looking at her slim yet curvaceous figure, I really wondered how this body had been "polished" by Daguo last night.

I went back to my bedroom and opened QQ. I wanted to question Daguo about what exactly he did last night and why Mom looked so worn out. Unexpectedly, as soon as I opened QQ, Daguo had already sent me a message.

"Is Auntie back? How is she?" Daguo must have gotten home.

"Don't even ask. What exactly did you do last night? Why does my mom look so tired?" I asked Daguo with a hint of anger. I had originally hoped Mom would get some "happiness," but it ended up like this.

"Didn't you watch the video? I just checked it, the footage is pretty good..." Daguo didn't answer my question, instead bringing up the video.

"I haven't had time to watch it yet..." I took a deep breath and typed back to Daguo.

"I really didn't hurt Auntie, don't worry, bro. This is normal. Auntie couldn't accept it at first, but she'll be fine after a while. After all, the relationship between us is taboo. It would be strange if Auntie could just switch it on and off easily..." Daguo sent me a long message.

"Forget it, I'm going to study..." I didn't know what else to say. Maybe Daguo was right. This relationship is something Mom can't accept immediately; she needs time to slowly adjust. It's also Daguo's fault for being too impatient. Entering Mom's bedroom last night undoubtedly shattered the pretense of their relationship.

By lunchtime, although Mom tried her best to act normal at the table, a flicker of light and something odd would occasionally pass through her eyes, and she seemed distracted, her mind elsewhere.

Mom made a sumptuous lunch for me. In the past, she would have asked me, "Why didn't you ask Daguo to stay?"

But this time she didn't. That's a rather subtle tell, I suppose.

In the afternoon, Mom didn't go to the storeroom. Instead, she went back to her own bedroom. During a bathroom break, I couldn't help but glance into Mom's room and saw her just lying on her bed, not sure if she was catching up on sleep or just pretending to sleep to calm herself.

I had thought about watching that video in the afternoon, but with Mom next door, I really couldn't. My smartwatch doesn't have headphones, and playing it on silent means I wouldn't hear anything.

"Did you watch the video?" Feeling bored, I opened QQ again, and Daguo had sent me another message.

"No..." I replied with a single character. Daguo seemed even more impatient than me. Is this kid that eager for me to see his "prowess"?

Does this kid have some exhibitionist tendencies?

"I just watched it several times. So thrilling... Even now it feels so unreal... If you hadn't been home last night, Auntie and I definitely would have succeeded..." Daguo paused for a while before replying.

"Aren't you going to ask how my mom is doing?" I couldn't help but ask with a touch of dissatisfaction.

"She should be fine. I saw her updating her WeChat Moments on those multi-level marketing accounts..." Daguo's reply seemed very casual. What kind of logic is that?

"After you watch the video, you'll understand. Auntie is fine. In fact..." Daguo only said half of that sentence this time before stopping. It seems while rewatching the video, Daguo must have noticed something.

Last night, in that situation, Daguo was also very nervous. Perhaps some things can only be discovered by watching the video later.

Did Mom have some special reaction last night?

Finally, after dinner in the evening, Mom finally went to the storeroom to do her livestream. I lay in bed under the covers.

I took a deep breath, opened QQ, and started playing the downloaded video.

My smartwatch screen is a bit small; I'm not sure if I'll be able to see clearly. I should have just kept Daguo's phone temporarily and returned it to him tomorrow.

The video started playing. The initial scene was from my bedroom. Daguo turned on the camera in my room last night and then carried it with him.

So the playback started with the scene from my room, then the screen went dark. That was probably when Daguo was holding it in his hand.

Now the screen was completely dark, with no sound either, but the video timer kept ticking away, second by second...
