His hand continued to stroke her hair, slower and slower, until his breathing evened out and his thoughts began to blur.
"Jin Di?"
No response.
"Are you asleep?" she whispered, then added more softly, "Jin Di… darling?"
"Hm?" That single word pulled him back from the edge of sleep. "Baby?"
"Oh, it's nothing," she said quickly. "We can talk about it another day."
He could tell from her tone that it wasn't nothing. Fighting off the heaviness dragging at his eyelids, he forced himself to stay awake. "It's fine. Tell me."
She shifted slightly, then said, "I don't like that you decided to send your subordinates to guard me without talking to me first."
His brow furrowed. "You mean the escort I arranged earlier today?"
She nodded against his chest.
