Chapter 21 - Chapter 21: The Light Went Out

"Anya, don't interfere for now."

Gripping the greatsword in his hands, Evan stepped forward—already prepared to fight.

The thing in front of him was clearly wrong. It had to be far stronger than the "Goblin Guard" he'd met on the first floor—after all, the Dungeon itself had announced its name.

So…

This guy was the real boss?!

A [Great Feat] was here.

Evan could feel it: this was the opponent he had to overcome to step onto the staircase to Level 2. So he couldn't let Anya help.

And besides—

He never feared a challenge.

But this wasn't a duel to the death between lone warriors. He had teammates.

"We're up, Lefiya!"

"Yes!!"

Pure-white magic gathered as the elf girl raised her staff—and at the same time, Evan charged in with his greatsword.

For a moment, it was like triumphant drums began to pound in the air. With the monster's roar, the battle started in an instant.

Slash!

The Glimmer Knight Who Has Lost His Faith was only about a meter tall—still bigger than an ordinary goblin, but nowhere near a human.

Yet the pale greatsword in its hands was nearly three meters long. It wasn't even especially wide; the blade looked slender and sharp—honestly more like a lance made for thrusting than a sword.

And when it swung with both hands, what Evan saw was a tiny flash of light that vanished in a blink.

What was that?

When a sudden horizontal slash came in, Evan instinctively back-hopped out of range.

But something was off—something was very off!!

He saw the knight take a small step forward, and the next moment, a slash formed from that tiny light arrived in the blink of an eye.

Clang!

Evan's body reacted on instinct, blocking with his greatsword—but the force was so enormous it sent him flying into the rock wall, carving out a shallow crater.

This guy's attacks landed half a beat later than what you actually saw?!

Evan took his first swig from the healing gourd.

When he stood again, the damage was already fully restored.

He tossed aside the greatsword.

The Glimmer Knight looked small, but its strength was no weaker than the Goblin Guard's. So this was what "the kingdom's strongest knights" meant…

Hard power wouldn't work—so he had to switch tactics.

That huge sword was clearly a long weapon.

Which meant its weakness was—

Close combat!

Evan swapped to the black-brass knuckled gauntlets hanging at his waist—and right then, a pure white arrow of light arrived.

"[Spirit Bow Light Arrow]!"

The surge of magic detonated as always, blasting a charred mark into the knight's chest. And using the blinding white flash from the explosion as cover, Evan rushed in while shouting to Lefiya—who was already chugging a mind-restoring potion and preparing a second cast.

"Can you keep blasting the same spot, Lefiya?"

"Huh?!"

Lefiya had three spells, but only two were offensive for now:

Single-target [Spirit Bow Light Arrow], and AoE [Volley Fire Javelins].

And [Spirit Bow Light Arrow] could automatically track enemies—basically the best spell to use in a boss fight.

So the kind of fine control Evan was asking for—repeatedly hammering one specific point—was something Lefiya had never tried before.

"I—I'll do my best!"

"I'm counting on you."

While they spoke, Evan was already right in front of the knight.

The greatsword's swing speed wasn't fast.

But just as he'd predicted, every attack still came half a beat later than what his eyes and senses expected.

So—

Evan recalled what it had felt like when he'd watched Anya move before.

Close your eyes. Don't look. Don't listen. Use your body to feel it—feel the touch of "wind rising" and "wind stopping."

…!

A needle-prick of pain shot through his whole body.

That was it!

Evan sprang up a hair's breadth before the slash touched him—twisting and slipping through the sword's net, finally breaking past the knight's guard.

Then—

He slammed a punch into the pale, fully enclosed helm—its faceplate only emitting a hollow, faint glow through narrow grille-like slits.

Crack.

A small sound like bone fracturing came from inside.

The gauntlets—"Marshmallow"—had a trait: [Internal Force]. Each hit dealt some damage that partially ignored armor.

But it still wasn't enough.

Dodging the knight's attempt to grab him, Evan moved like a slick eel—circling from the front to the back in an instant—then fired off a combat art straight into the back of its head.

[Elbow Strike]!

Don't ask why a gauntlet's combat art was an elbow. He didn't know either.

That special attack carried a stun effect, and it landed cleanly on the knight's back of the head.

And—

The moment Evan's right elbow came down, his left hand was already holding the newly acquired "wheelchair staff," triggering its combat art:

[Glimmer Echo]!

So a second arm made of tiny light motes dropped again—

A perfect encore—another elbow!!

The chained combat arts finally made the boss stumble.

A chance!

Even if it was pure instinct, the elf girl chanting in the distance caught that fleeting opening.

A pure white arrow of light shot out again—

Straight at the same spot on the chest plate, already scorched black from the first blast.

Lefiya was completely serious now.

Even though it was her first time actively controlling a spell that was already released—this wasn't about "can I do it?"

It was "I have to do it!"

That was an adventurer's resolve!!

Boom!

Even armor blessed by the goddess wasn't some indestructible divine relic—not under the bombardment of a Level 2 mage.

In the blinding white flash, shards of pale armor burst outward. When the light faded, you could see it clearly:

Cracks spiderwebbed across the knight's chest plate.

It was working—just a few more hits!

Reality wasn't a game.

Against heavy armor, the most important thing was opening the can first—otherwise you couldn't deal meaningful damage at all!

That was why Evan had started with the two-handed greatsword—because among all his weapons, the one best suited to heavy knights was "Good Fortune," with the [Armor Break] trait.

The gauntlets were the second-best option.

After all, not every strike ignored defense—only part of it.

At best, it turned "can't break defense" into "chip damage."

But who knew how long you'd have to chip before you killed it?

"Again, Lefiya!"

If the strategy worked, then all they had to do was keep going!

"Okay!!"

With the elf girl's energetic reply, the battle continued.

Evan kept brawling at near point-blank range. At that distance, the knight couldn't even use half the power of its greatsword, and could only roar and occasionally try to grab him with both hands.

Too slow.

A throw that doesn't start on frame zero thinks it can catch him?!

With the third [Spirit Bow Light Arrow], the chest plate was now packed with dense cracks—like pottery about to shatter.

It was at its limit.

And right then, the Dungeon trembled again—

No, the boss trembled.

"AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA——!"

Phase change!

Almost on instinct, Evan retreated quickly from the frenzied, screaming knight.

And sure enough—those pale blue will-o'-wisps that had been hovering around it like special effects surged together, converging onto the greatsword in its hands.

In a blink—

The blade, once stained with dark-red rusted blood and filth, turned into a dazzling starry river.

"Watch out!!"

The glimmer exploded outward, covering the entire cavern.

The elf girl was still mid-chant, staring at the incoming light—until the next second, Evan's silhouette blocked it.

Evan raised a brass greatshield, standing in front of Lefiya and Anya!

Clangclangclangclangclang—

A storm of impacts filled the chamber. The glimmer shot like a downpour—even with the shield blocking it, the shock that pierced through still made Evan spit out a clotted lump of blood.

Quickly—

He took the second swig from the healing gourd.

Restored in an instant, the moment the scattered light finally died out, Evan charged at the Glimmer Knight with shield raised.

Combat art—Shield Bash!

He slammed the short body straight into the ground.

And immediately after that, the elf girl—who hadn't stopped chanting even under the glimmer barrage—released her spell again:

"[Spirit Bow Light Arrow]!"

A pure white arrow of light fell from above, landing yet again right into the chest armor.

Crack.

In the white glow, the blue-moon emblem on the pale breastplate shattered, revealing the scarred gray-white flesh inside.

And almost at the same time—

Before Lefiya's spell even arrived, Evan had already leapt high, giving her arrow a clear line—

Then, as he triggered [Glimmer Echo] with the short staff in his left hand…

His right hand settled on the hilt at his waist.

This was the finisher.

Combat art—[Round Moon Slash]!

The upward slash, boosted and accelerated by the [Draw Slash] trait, made that cold crescent far faster than before—giving Evan time to do something even harder:

Within the one second where [Glimmer Echo] was active, he unleashed a second combat art—this time from above, downward.

[Round Moon Slash], two-hit chain!!

Cold crescents appeared again—while the glimmer-made slash alternated above and below, blazing in mirrored brilliance.

Secret technique—

Twin Moons: Double Layer.

Two moon-wheels dispersed one after another. As Evan sheathed his blade, they became fading glimmers drifting quietly away.

The Glimmer Knight Who Has Lost His Faith was cut into four pieces.

From the torn-open flesh at the center of its chest, Evan took the massive magic stone.

The knight's body turned to ash and scattered.

Aside from the magic stone, all that remained was its greatsword—caked in dark-red rusted blood.

A drop.

Evan walked up and picked it up.

Glimmer Greatsword:

A strangely shaped massive weapon. For goblins, even lifting their head to look up at it is difficult. Only the strongest knights, tempered through countless trials, can lift and wield it. Even so, to goblins born of darkness, it is nothing more than a small, unremarkable glimmer of light.

Combat Art: Glimmer Slash

When swung, after one second, a glimmer repeats the slash, dealing some magic damage.

Light Attribute
