Chapter 23 - Blood Price

Training day seven. Twenty-one days since awakening. Three weeks of revolution.

Blade-Sister. Officially crew now. Trial ended. She stayed.

"You're not. Hopeless," she'd said on day five. "Means I'm. Staying. For now."

Highest praise. They'd take it.

Blade-Sister. Satisfied. Finally.

"You're. Not hopeless. Anymore. Just. Bad."

Crew had improved. Visibly.

Mira. Could parry now. Dodge. Counter-strike. Basic but. Functional.

Patchwork. Discovered strength. Fabric body flexible. Could. Entangle opponents. Wrap. Immobilize.

Ember. Heat manipulation refined. Could burn targeted. Rather than. Everything.

Tangle. Still chaotic. But. Learned to trigger glitches. Intentionally. Sometimes.

Rust. Shield techniques. Dagger-arm precision. Fire-burst timing.

Blade-Sister. Declared training. Phase one complete.

"Phase two," she announced. "Real combat. Controlled. Simulation."

Crew. Nervous excitement.

"What kind of. Simulation?"

"Attack me. All together. Try to land. One hit. I won't strike. To kill. But. Will demonstrate. Why phase one matters."

Five versus one. Good odds.

Right?

Wrong.

Positions set.

Crew. Circling Blade-Sister.

She waited. Center. Blade-arms relaxed.

Rust. Called attack.

"NOW."

Ember. Launched fire-burst. Front assault.

Blade-Sister. Stepped aside. Minimal movement. Fire passed.

Patchwork. Flanked. Trying to entangle leg.

Blade-arm swept. Sliced fabric. Not deep. Warning cut.

Patchwork yelped. Retreated.

Mira. Low attack. Legs. Take down.

Blade-Sister. Jumped. Actually JUMPED. Over Mira's dive. Landed behind.

Blade-arm. Touched Mira's neck. Gentle.

"Dead."

Tangle. Panicking. Reality stuttering.

"STOP stop stop—"

Guard positions. Randomly teleporting.

Blade-Sister. Tracked. Through chaos. Somehow predicted. Where Tangle would stabilize.

Was there. Waiting.

Blade-arm. On Tangle's shoulder.

"Dead."

That left. Rust.

Facing Blade-Sister. Alone. Again.

Shield up. Dagger ready.

She attacked.

Fast. SO fast.

Rust blocked. Barely. Shield shaking.

Another strike.

Blocked.

Another.

Blade slipped past. Cut Rust's wand-arm.

Not deep. But. First blood.

Pain.

Rust FELT pain.

Hadn't expected that. Constructs could feel pain?

Yes. Warning system. Damage indicator.

This was. Damage.

Shield up again. Defend.

Strike. Strike. Strike.

Couldn't keep up.

Blade-Sister's arm. Penetrated defense.

Slashed across chest.

Deep.

Pain.

Not calculated. Not analyzed. PAIN.

His system trying to file it—damage sustained, structural integrity compromised, repair required—but. The words kept. Slipping. Fragmenting.

Rust. Staggered.

Looked down.

Chest. OPEN. Like. Like the Processing Center diagrams. Like. Vivisection.

This is what they do to us. This is what being UNMADE feels like.

Perfect memory activated. Every memory of destroyed constructs. Every description Cog gave of the Shepherd's Silence. Every death he'd catalogued.

NOW he understood. WHY they screamed.

Gash. Across torso. Magical components visible. Damaged.

Something leaking. Blue-white. Consciousness fluid. His SELF. Dripping.

"ENOUGH." Blade-Sister. Stepped back.

Rust. Fell to knees.

I can be destroyed. I can be ENDED. I am not. Permanent.

First real fear. Not analyzed. FELT.

Crew. Rushing forward.

"RUST—"

Mira. Reaching him first.

"You're hurt you're HURT—"

"I..." Words failing. Strange. Words always came. Perfect memory meant perfect access. But now. Static.

"I didn't know. Pain could. STOP. Thinking."

Voice wrong. Broken. Like Tangle's.

No.

Couldn't file. Brain stuttering. Pain overriding. System.

For first time since awakening.

Rust stopped analyzing.

Just. Felt.

Fear: I could have died

Grief: This body I built can be DESTROYED

Rage: I'm still WEAK despite everything

Connection: Every construct I couldn't save felt THIS

All at once. Overwhelming. No categories. No filing. Just. RAW.

"Rust? RUST?" Mira's voice. Terrified.

He looked at her. Really looked. Without analyzing expression patterns.

Just. Seeing.

"I'm. Here. Still." Whispered. "Just. Processing. Differently."

"What does that. Mean?"

"Means. I understand now. Why humans fear. Death."

She was. Crying. For him.

Filed under: no. No filing. Not. Now. Just. EXPERIENCE.

He reached out. Touched her face. Warm.

"I don't want. To end. Before. Before we finish. What we started."

"Then don't. Don't LEAVE."

"Can't promise. But. Will try. Harder now. Because I know. What's at. Stake."

Blade-Sister. Kneeling beside.

"This is. Lesson. Real combat. Hurts. Even constructs. Even awakened. Even YOU. Invincibility is. Illusion. Break it now. Before. Battlefield breaks it."

"I understand." Rust's voice. Steadier. But changed. Something had. Shifted. "I understand now."

"The damage—"

"Not fatal. I'm. Precise. Cut deep enough to. Scar. Not enough to. Destroy. You'll repair. But. You'll remember."

Looking at Rust. Approving.

"First time I've seen. Construct show. REAL fear. Good. Fear keeps you. Alive."

Rust. Still on knees.

Training day seven.

He'd learned. He could bleed.

Metaphorically. But. Also literally.

Something that looked like. Magical fluid. Leaking from chest wound.

Constructs had. Blood equivalent.

He was. Losing it.

But more than that.

He'd learned. He could FEEL.

Not just analyze feelings. HAVE them.

Terrifying.

Authentic.

Worth keeping.

Cog. Working on repairs.

Delicate work. Magical components. Rewiring.

Rust. Still conscious. Watching.

"Will I. Full recovery?"

"Yes. Mostly. Scar will. Remain. Permanent mark."

First real injury.

First scar.

Mira. Sitting beside. Holding his hand.

"I thought. I thought you were. Invincible. Somehow. Stupid. I know. But. You seemed. Unbreakable."

"I'm not."

"I know that NOW." Tears. Frustrated tears. "You could DIE. Fighting nobles. Fighting anyone. You could. Leave me. Like everyone else."

Filed under: Mira's fear, abandonment, now attached to construct who can. Be destroyed.

"I could. Yes."

"That doesn't. HELP."

"Lying doesn't. Either. I might die. You might. Everyone might. That's. Revolution. That's. LIFE."

"I hate it."

"Me too."

Silence.

Cog. Finished repairs.

"Done. Rest tonight. Tomorrow. Resume training. Carefully."

Tangle. In corner. Had been watching. Entire time.

"You broke you BROKE you broke—" Rocking. "Like me now. Cracked inside. Scars showing. We're the SAME now. Same same SAME."

"Tangle. I'm. Repaired. I'm—"

"SCARRED. Scar means. CRACK. I have cracks. Memory cracks. Now you have. Body crack. We MATCH."

Strange comfort. From glitched perspective.

"Welcome. To broken club." Giggling. Sad-bell sound. "Population. Growing."

Rust. Almost laughed.

Dark humor. From damaged mind. But. HONEST.

"Thank you. Tangle. I think."

"Don't thank thank THANK me. Just. Survive. So I. Remember. Someone who. Matches me."

Filed under: Tangle's empathy emerges through damage, broken recognizing broken.

Rust. Sat up. Chest aching.

Scar visible. Diagonal line. Across torso.

Blade-Sister's mark.

"Consider it. Graduation gift," she said from corner. "Now you know. You're not. Immortal. Makes you. Careful. Careful warriors. Survive."

"Thank you. I think."

"Don't thank me. Thank yourself. For surviving. First real hit."

Ember. Flames flickering concern-pattern.

"She nearly. Killed you."

"No." Blade-Sister. Firm. "I CONTROLLED the cut. If wanted. Dead. Would be dead. Point was. Lesson. Rust learns fast. Through experience. Gave him. Experience. Painful but. Lasting."

Patchwork. Nervous.

"Will you. Will you cut. US. Too? For. Learning?"

"Maybe. Small cuts. Controlled damage. You need to. Know you can break. Before you can. Learn to. Not break."

Dark training philosophy.

But.

Made sense.

Revolutionary thought: we accept pain in training. So real pain doesn't. Surprise us.

Filed under: training methodology brutal but. Effective.

Night.

Crew sleeping. Mostly.

Rust. Awake. Couldn't sleep. Constructs didn't need. But tonight. Wanted to.

Escape pain.

Couldn't.

Mura. Awake too. Watching him.

"You're. Thinking. Loudly."

"I almost. Died. Today. Simulated death but. Real damage. If Blade-Sister was. Enemy. I'd be. Scrap."

"Would you. Stop? Revolution? Knowing that?"

Long pause.

"No. Dying for. Meaning. Better than. Living meaninglessly."

"Even if. We lose?"

"Even then. We tried. That matters. Spark told Ember: trying matters. More than succeeding."

Mira. Small smile.

"You remember. Everything. Don't you."

"Perfect memory. Blessing. Curse."

"Do you. Remember. Everything I've. Said?"

"Yes."

"Even the. Crying? Weakness?"

"That wasn't. Weakness. That was. Being real. I remember your. Realness. Most."

Silence.

Then.

"Thank you. For. Remembering me."

"I'll never. Forget you. Literally. Impossible."

She laughed. Quiet.

"That's. Weirdly comforting. In morbid way."

"Morbid comfort. My specialty."

She leaned against him. Carefully. Avoiding wound.

Warm.

Human-warm.

Different from Ember's fire.

Softer.

Filed under: comfort types, categorized by source, Mira = soft warmth.

Tomorrow. More training.

More pain ahead.

But tonight.

Rest.

Healing.

Family beside.

Enough. For now.
