Chapter 43 - Chapter 43: The Last Queen Standing

Chapter 43: The Last Queen Standing

The sanctuary doors exploded outward.

A wave of emerald light surged through the Hall of Oaths, forcing everyone to shield their eyes.

The Hollow Guard froze where they stood.

The violet flames burning within their helmets flickered violently before disappearing one by one.

Their swords slipped from their lifeless hands, clattering against the stone floor.

The magic controlling them had been broken.

A stunned silence spread across the battlefield.

Then, from the emerald light, Emerald emerged.

Her armor had transformed.

Silver and emerald plates shimmered like living crystal, woven together with glowing vines. Upon her head rested a delicate crown of emerald branches, and behind her flowed a cloak that seemed to be woven from light itself.

The mark on her arm was gone.

It no longer needed to exist.

Its power had become part of her.

Noah stared in amazement.

"Emerald..."

Sara smiled through her exhaustion.

"She did it."

Varak lowered his massive head.

"My Queen."

One by one, the loyal Hunters followed.

Then the recruits.

Then even the spirits lingering in the Hall bowed before disappearing completely.

Only one person refused.

The False Queen.

Her expression twisted with fury.

"No."

She gripped her cracked obsidian staff so tightly that her knuckles turned white.

"The throne belongs to me!"

She unleashed a torrent of corrupted magic.

A river of violet fire raced toward Emerald, melting the stone beneath it.

Emerald calmly raised one hand.

A wall of emerald crystal blossomed from the ground.

The two forces collided.

Instead of exploding...

The darkness simply dissolved.

The chamber fell silent.

The False Queen stared in disbelief.

"My magic..."

"It isn't weaker," Emerald said gently.

"It was never stronger than the throne."

The Queen screamed and charged.

Their weapons collided with a deafening crash.

The obsidian staff struck like lightning.

Emerald's sword answered with graceful precision.

Every blow shook the Hall.

Green and violet light flashed with each clash.

Around them, everyone else stood still.

No one dared interfere.

This battle belonged to them alone.

The Queen spun her staff, creating dozens of dark copies of herself.

They surrounded Emerald from every direction.

"No trick can hide the truth," Emerald said.

She closed her eyes.

For the first time, she didn't rely on sight.

She listened.

She felt the heartbeat of the kingdom.

The heartbeat of the throne.

Only one of the Queens had a heartbeat.

Emerald opened her eyes.

"There."

She dashed forward.

Her sword sliced through every illusion before stopping at the False Queen.

The obsidian staff split cleanly in two.

It shattered into black dust.

The False Queen stumbled backward.

"No..."

She looked at her empty hands in horror.

"It can't end like this."

"It doesn't have to," Emerald replied.

The room fell quiet.

Emerald lowered her sword.

"You can surrender."

"I can imprison you."

"I won't execute you."

Everyone looked at Emerald in surprise.

Even Darius lowered his spear.

The False Queen laughed bitterly.

"Mercy?"

"You still think mercy makes you strong?"

"No," Emerald answered.

"It makes me different from you."

For a brief moment, something changed in the False Queen's eyes.

Regret.

Pain.

A lifetime of loneliness.

Then it vanished.

"If I cannot rule..."

Her voice became cold.

"...then no one will."

From beneath her armor, she withdrew a small crystal.

It was blacker than the night itself.

Emerald gasped.

"The Void Heart..."

The Queen crushed it.

The Hall of Oaths shook violently.

Cracks spread across the floor.

Far below, the Emerald Throne pulsed erratically.

A deafening roar echoed from somewhere beyond the walls of reality.

The air itself began to tear apart.

Darkness poured from the widening cracks like smoke.

"The Third Realm," Darius whispered.

"The seal..."

"...is breaking."

The False Queen laughed as the chamber collapsed around her.

"You've won the throne..."

She spread her arms.

"...but you've already lost your kingdom."

The roar grew louder.

A massive claw, darker than shadow itself, reached through one of the tears in reality.

Its presence alone caused the emerald crystals lining the Hall to crack.

Varak stepped protectively in front of Emerald.

His six eyes widened with fear.

"I know that presence..."

"What is it?" Noah asked.

Varak's voice trembled.

"The King Beyond the Veil."

Even the False Queen's smile disappeared.

She had expected destruction.

She had not expected him.

A deep voice echoed from the darkness, ancient enough to make the walls shake.

"At last..."

The claw gripped the edge of the rift.

"...the prison opens."

Emerald looked up at the growing tear in reality.

Her crown glowed brightly.

She finally understood the burden her parents had carried.

Defeating the False Queen had never been the end.

It had only been the beginning.

She raised her sword.

"Everyone," she called, her voice calm despite the chaos.

"Stand with me."

Noah stepped to her right.

"Always."

Sara, Sam, and Kael joined her without hesitation.

Lyra drew her daggers.

"My life is yours, Your Majesty."

Darius planted his spear into the stone beside Emerald.

"The Hunters stand with the true Queen."

Varak let out a thunderous roar.

The remaining recruits formed ranks behind their leaders.

Together, they faced the widening rift.

The shadowed figure beyond it smiled.

The final war had begun.
