Chapter 13 - Manufacturing Anxiety, The Wily Hunter

"Ichinose-san and Kanzaki-san."

Walking along a path on the academy grounds, in a relatively secluded spot, Natsuki Subaru spoke directly: "I wonder, don't you find this school strange?"

"We get points worth a hundred thousand yen deposited every month. The benefits are a bit too good, don't you think?"

"The student council president at the entrance ceremony also emphasized that this is an academy of meritocracy."

"I believe it's possible to receive one hundred thousand points a month, but it's obvious that in an academy of meritocracy, you must possess merit to do so."

Natsuki Subaru stopped and turned around, like a patient fisherman.

If you want to sell goods and get a good price, creating anxiety is essential. As the former Purge King, Natsuki Subaru knew better than anyone how he had amassed his world-beating fortune.

It was obtained through countless business confrontations.

Of course, Natsuki Subaru wouldn't deny that resetting played a ninety-nine, or even ninety-nine-point-nine, percent role. Without the constant trial and error of resetting, he would have been devoured, bones and all, long ago.

However, at the same time, Natsuki Subaru had also accumulated a wealth of experience.

Perhaps in the real adult world, he was still lacking and needed to rely on resets to fill the gaps, but in a place like this school, which was like a child's game, his experience was more than enough.

You could even call it a dimensional takedown.

'Create anxiety, or rather, make the other party clearly realize that their situation is not good.'

'Giving them the so-called answer directly is the most foolish approach.'

Natsuki Subaru's slightly weary eyes swept over Honami Ichinose and Ryūji Kanzaki.

Although it had only been a brief exchange, Natsuki Subaru already had a rough character profile of them in his mind.

Honami Ichinose and Ryūji Kanzaki had no chance of struggling against him.

"Merit…"

"So, Natsuki-kun, you already know the standard for evaluating merit?"

After hearing Natsuki Subaru's words, Honami Ichinose said with some hesitation, "Isn't the standard for evaluating a student's merit their grades on each exam?"

Just as Natsuki Subaru had profiled her, Honami Ichinose asked with pure, simple confusion.

In fact, it was true. Although Ichinose had noticed the homeroom teacher and the student council president repeatedly emphasizing 'meritocracy' and knew that the hundred thousand points per month wouldn't be easy to get.

However, her thinking was simple. As students, merit was naturally equivalent to academic ability and grades.

As long as her grades were good enough, she should be able to enjoy the benefit of one hundred thousand points a month.

Even if it was a little less, not quite one hundred thousand points, or even half, Ichinose felt it was still acceptable. For a student, one hundred thousand points a month was simply too much.

This was something she wouldn't have even dared to dream of before enrolling.

"Ichinose-san."

"A personality like yours is really dangerous."

Natsuki Subaru looked at the pure, simple confusion on Honami Ichinose's face, a faint smile appearing on his own as he said, "Especially for a class leader."

To be honest, Natsuki Subaru did not like personalities like Honami Ichinose's.

He disliked them very, very much.

Even though, among the many 'fakes', hers was probably the most harmless type.

Because a kind person is kind to everyone. Such a person would, sooner or later, be backstabbed for the sake of another person, or even a group of people.

"Natsuki-kun, if you have something to say, just say it."

"Telling us how complicated this school is can't be your only goal, right?"

Seeing Honami Ichinose's expression suddenly become conflicted, Ryūji Kanzaki's brow furrowed slightly. He stepped forward, positioning himself between Natsuki Subaru and Honami Ichinose.

Having had prior contact with the adult world, Ryūji Kanzaki understood clearly.

Natsuki Subaru was simply adding chips to his side for his next move.

"Heh, no problem."

"In my view, this school's 'closed-off management,' 'huge allowance,' and 'massive surveillance' are enough to constitute the conditions for a 'testing ground.' Such an elaborate 'test' is probably not about academic performance, is it?"

"Kanzaki-san, you must come from a rather well-off background."

Natsuki Subaru paid no mind to Ryūji Kanzaki's action, his gaze resting on him as he smiled faintly. "I imagine Kanzaki-san isn't like those children with no experience of the real world, thinking that a hundred thousand yen a month in allowance is because the school is kind, the government is kind, or that their own 'merit' deserves it, right?"

As his words fell, Natsuki Subaru said no more.

With something like anxiety, going too far is as bad as not going far enough. A moderate amount is just right.

Next, he just needed to wait quietly for the two leaders of Year 1, Class B, Honami Ichinose and Ryūji Kanzaki, to make their choice, whether to continue the deal with him or something else.

If they refused the deal, Natsuki Subaru could only regretfully look for a new buyer.

Year 1, Class C was no good, so he'd have to sell it cheap to Year 1, Class A.

If possible, Natsuki Subaru really didn't want to fight over something like this with a self-proclaimed genius white-haired girl like Arisu Sakayanagi.

"So, Natsuki-kun, you still haven't stated your objective."

Honami Ichinose quickly calmed her emotions and asked with a smile, "Natsuki-kun, you came all this way to tell us such important information. You must want to get something from Year 1, Class B."

"To be honest, today is only the first official day of classes."

"Other than points, I really can't think of what your goal could be. Do you want to get points from us?"

'Oh?'

Natsuki Subaru looked at Honami Ichinose with slight surprise.

"Ichinose-san, you're a little more outstanding than I imagined."

"I originally thought I'd have to explain it in detail."

Natsuki Subaru smiled and confirmed, "That's right. I currently have some understanding of this school's rules. While it's not comprehensive, I don't plan on selling it for too much."

"500,000 points."

"I'll tell you the 'truth' of this academy."

"It's an absolute bargain, you know."

Looking at Honami Ichinose and Ryūji Kanzaki, the smile on Natsuki Subaru's face remained unchanged, as if he had never been surprised by the final outcome from the very beginning.
