Chapter 5 - Entering the Line of Sight

From the very beginning, Kiyotaka Ayanokōji had a very dangerous feeling about Natsuki Subaru.

And compared to himself, he was even more dangerous. Natsuki Subaru exuded an air of 'indifference,' which gave Kiyotaka Ayanokōji a very uncomfortable feeling.

It was as if, at any moment, in the very next second, Natsuki Subaru could suddenly erupt into a murderous rage.

Just now, the moment Natsuki Subaru asked Haruki Yamauchi if he had a coin or a commemorative medal on him, that feeling in Kiyotaka Ayanokōji's heart reached its peak.

'No, this guy is definitely not from that place.'

'This guy can't be summed up with just the word 'dangerous'. That place doesn't allow... a person like that.'

'Forget it. As long as he's not from that place, it's fine. I don't care if this guy will really erupt and kill someone in the next second, as long as he doesn't provoke me... a peaceful school life is best.'

Kiyotaka Ayanokōji sighed lightly, stood up, and left the classroom.

He had only intended to come to this academy to experience a life completely different from 'that place,' but it seemed it hadn't brought him any sense of ease.

Merely sitting in front of Natsuki Subaru had kept Kiyotaka Ayanokōji in a relatively tense state.

Even though Kiyotaka Ayanokōji believed that if he got serious, he could easily subdue this person he considered dangerous in a short amount of time.

...

Natsuki Subaru didn't care about the somewhat unpleasant events that had just occurred in the classroom.

If he always dwelled on such things, Natsuki Subaru could never have become the unfathomable Purge King that everyone feared.

"Warm sunlight, a relaxed pace."

"Even after all this time, it still makes me feel slightly uncomfortable."

Natsuki Subaru wandered aimlessly around the academy.

There were no classes today. After the entrance ceremony and the homeroom teacher's brief introduction to the school, it was the students' free time. Natsuki Subaru planned to familiarize himself with the area where he would be living for the next three years, and likely more.

However, Natsuki Subaru soon keenly sensed that something was wrong with the school.

The surveillance cameras mentioned before were one thing; after all, it was an academy heavily supported by the state. More cameras to ensure student safety was a reasonable matter.

Even if the number of cameras Natsuki Subaru had noticed so far had already reached a highly unreasonable level.

But the difference in mentality among the students was quite obvious.

Some who were clearly upperclassmen carried an immense pressure, completely different from the first-year newcomers.

'Heh, so the points worth one hundred thousand yen in spending power a month aren't so easy to get after all.'

'Based on my understanding of this country, Japan, this academy is definitely a pure 'gu' cultivation system.'

Natsuki Subaru inconspicuously made his way to the second-year students' teaching area.

Without any pause or lingering, just by relying on various fleeting images, he had already confirmed some of his previous speculations and conjectures.

The points worth one hundred thousand yen each month were merely the bait laid out in the open.

Those who could truly enjoy this benefit would obviously be a very small minority. After observing the second-years, Natsuki Subaru casually went to check on the third-years.

It was more or less the same.

The only difference between the third and second years was probably that a portion of them had completely lost all pressure and given up, looking as if they had abandoned the struggle, somewhat similar to how he had been when trapped in a dead-end loop.

On his path to becoming the Purge King, even with the ability to reset, Natsuki Subaru's journey was by no means smooth.

He had once been trapped in a dead-end situation where, no matter what he did, he couldn't change the outcome. Natsuki Subaru had not been immune to giving up, but in the end, he managed to forcefully turn things around through a number of resets he could no longer even remember.

'That kind of experience.'

'Even thinking about it now still makes my heart pound.'

Natsuki Subaru, with his perpetually weary dark circles under his eyes, left the third-year area with a look of indifference.

He said he was just wandering, and he really was just wandering around, nothing more.

Whether it was the obviously incorrect number of students in the second and third-year classes, or the class points that the first-years didn't have at all, Natsuki Subaru noticed it all. He even noticed that someone was observing him.

But Natsuki Subaru didn't care.

Even in the world where the Kingdom of Lugunica existed, Natsuki Subaru was able to grow from an ordinary person to the level of the Purge King; this ordinary world without supernatural powers was even less of a challenge.

In this world, if Natsuki Subaru was willing, he could become a character even more terrifying than the former Purge King with much greater ease, but none of it had any meaning anymore.

Natsuki Subaru disliked doing meaningless things.

His self-destructive tendencies weren't as severe as before, and the reason he became the Purge King and had that self-destructive mentality in the first place was entirely because he had placed his hopes on his former friend, Reinhard.

Natsuki Subaru believed that Reinhard would bring the truest color, shining as brilliantly as he did back then, to end his life and grant him eternal peace.

He just needed to become a villain that Reinhard would have no choice but to kill.

Emilia was a temporary anchor for Natsuki Subaru at the time, while Ram was his final retreat.

As for now, Natsuki Subaru felt that before he completely lost control of his self-destructive urges, he could still try a little, try to find the existence of something 'genuine'.

Whether it was the 'genuine article' symbolized by the beauty in Natsuki Subaru's ideals like Emilia, the 'genuine article' of Ram's absolute disgust, dislike, and hatred for him, or the brilliant and shining 'genuine article' like Reinhard.

As long as it was a true 'genuine article', Natsuki Subaru wanted to approach it, get close to it, even if he were to be covered in wounds, even if...

...

"How is he?"

"This new face, which first-year class is he from?"

In Student Council President Manabu Horikita's office.

Manabu Horikita watched Natsuki Subaru leave the third-year school building with ease on the monitor and asked with great interest.

Today was the first day of school, so after the entrance ceremony ended, Manabu Horikita was in his office handling daily tasks while also observing the situation with the first-years.
