Risa felt a strange tightness in her chest as she looked at Melly. Suddenly, she imagined a scenario of a virus spreading, just like in the moviesโnot far from Odin's explanation. Risa took a short breath, then forced herself to move closer to Melly. She stepped forward until she stood right in front of the girl.
She leaned down and grabbed Melly's wrist without permission, pulling it toward her. Melly tried to hold back, but Risa was stronger and pulled her hand firmly. Melly gave up. On her wrist, Risa saw a long woundโit looked like a deep scratch or a claw mark.
The wound was still wet, as if it had just happened. Risa frowned, feeling suspicious. She looked at Melly, who was staring back with pure fear. Neither of them said a word. Slowly, Risa let go of Melly's hand.
Risa was about to ask what happened, but Odin suddenly appeared out of nowhere. He shouted, looking shocked when he saw the wound.
"Oh my God! What happened to your hand? That's a huge scratch!"
He was so loud that Risa jumped. She stood up and turned to face him. She glanced at Melly, who was still silent, then looked back at Odin. Even though she was hesitant, she explained the situation.
"I don't know... I haven't asked her yet. But it looks like a scratch or a claw mark. I can't tell for sure because it's still fresh and messy," Risa said.
Then, she looked back at Melly, who looked very nervous. Feeling Risa's gaze, Melly finally spoke in a low voice.
"I... I was moving a desk earlier, and I cut my hand..."
Odin looked closely at the wound. He thought for a moment, then asked, "If that's from a desk... why isn't there any blood on the floor here? Are you... lying to us, Melly?"
The question hit Melly hard. Finally, she stood up and stopped hiding it. She looked down and spoke quietly.
"Actually... I got this while I was running to the school. I saw something horrible in an alley and ran as fast as I could. When I got to class, I was so scared that I just sat there. While we were building the barricade, I saw a small gap in the door. I tried to fix it, but a tongue slipped through the crack. Its saliva dripped right onto my wound. I didn't think it was a big deal, so I just closed the gap. The creature must have realized and pulled its tongue back before it got stuck..."
Melly explained, hugging her own arm. Odin and Risa looked at each other. Risa walked back to Melly's side, looked at Odin, and whispered.
"Odin, go tell Mr. Edward about this. Be quiet, don't let the others hear. I'll stay here with Melly, okay?"
Odin nodded and went to talk to Mr. Edward. From across the room, Risa saw them talking and looking over at Melly. Risa gently told Melly to sit down. While they waited, Risa asked another question.
"Is that why you were so scared to show us?"
Melly looked up at Risa with tears in her eyes. She nodded and answered.
"I heard what you guys said about the infection. I know I touched that thing... and I'm terrified. I don't want to die, and I don't want to turn into one of them. I didn't know what to do... I wanted to stay quiet, but I miss my family so much. I'm scared I'll never see them again. What did I do to deserve this?"
She went quiet, looking so broken that Risa felt sorry for her. Risa reached out and held Melly's hand to comfort her. Soon, Mr. Edward and Odin came over. Mr. Edward sat down in front of Melly.
They looked at each other for a moment before he spoke.
"Odin told me everything. Listen, Melly, I'll keep this a secret for now, but you have to stay close to me so I can watch you. This is the best I can do right now... Do you understand?"
Melly nodded. Mr. Edward then looked at Risa and Odin.
"Please, don't tell anyone else about this, okay?"
Risa and Odin agreed. They went back to their spots, and Mr. Edward sat near Melly. Everything felt calm, but they didn't realize that another student had overheard everything. Night came.
Everyone was hungry and tired. Mr. Edward spoke to the group.
"We're all exhausted. Let's get some sleep. We'll figure out how to get food in the morning."
The students lay down on the cold floor. Near the door, only Mr. Edward stayed awake to watch Melly. But he was exhausted too. Eventually, he couldn't keep his eyes open and fell asleep.
A moment later, Lena sat up. She looked at Mr. Edward, then at the sleeping Melly. She sighed and whispered.
"Finally..."
She stood up and walked carefully past the other students. She stopped in front of Melly and took a deep breath. She went to the door and slowly moved a desk to make a small opening. Then, she went back and picked Melly up.
But Melly was heavy, and Lena tripped.
"CRASH!"
They both hit the floor. The noise woke everyone up. Panicked, Lena jumped up and grabbed Melly by her hair. Melly screamed, but Lena didn't care. Her eyes were cold and dark.
Lena dragged Melly toward the door. Mr. Edward ran as fast as he could to stop her. But Lena was fasterโshe pushed Melly out of the room.
"THUD!"
Mr. Edward ran out after her. The other students tried to pull Lena back, but it was too late. Tim yelled at Lena.
"Are you crazy?! What did you do?!"
Everyone was awake now. Risa and Ellie stood up, but Risa stopped when she saw the open door.
"Risa, what's wrong?"
Ellie asked.
"They're gone..."
Risa whispered.
"Who isโ?"
Suddenly, a loud howl cut her off. Outside, the creature appeared. Mr. Edward tried to help Melly up, but she was hurt from the fall. The creature moved with incredible speed and attacked Melly right in front of him.
Mr. Edward fell to his knees. Melly's severed hand was still in his grip. He stared at it in horror before dropping it. He was devastated watching the creature eat Melly. He caught a glimpse of the hallway to run, but the voices of his students made him decide to go back to the door.
Inside, the students heard Melly's terrible screams. The door creaked, and Mr. Edward stood there. He said quietly.
"Melly is gone. I couldn't save her."
He took a deep breath.
"I have one last request. I'm going to close this door, and I need you to block it immediately. No matter what you hear, do not open this door until that thing is gone, okay? And... Lena."
He looked at Lena, who was frozen in fear. He gave a small smile.
"Everyone is scared, I know you are too. But next time, please talk to the others first, okay?"
He looked at the whole class with a kind smile. He closed his eyes, pulled the door shut, and locked it. Outside, he leaned against the door. Tears ran down his face. He had dreams too, but his students were more important.
As he felt cold hands touching him, he stayed silent.
Inside, the girls were crying. Jhon, Odin, and Tim rushed to block the door again. Ellie looked at Risa with tears in her eyes and whispered.
"This is just going to keep happening, isn't it?"
Risa didn't answer. She just stared at the door as fresh blood began to leak underneath it. Lena sat on the floor, realizing she had just caused the death of a good man.
That night felt colder than ever. They had lost their leader, and they had lost their trust in each other.
