Chapter 24 - 24. Provisional Status

Takumi stood along one of Aoshima's livelier market streets, phone in hand, headphones resting comfortably over his ears. The plaza opened wide around a circular fountain at its center, water spilling gently over stone tiers while voices and footsteps blended into a steady hum. Small storefronts framed the square—food stalls with warm steam drifting from open counters, compact grocery markets, and quiet little restaurants tucked between patches of greenery.

A wooden bench sat near the fountain's edge. Takumi leaned near it, gaze fixed on his screen as he scrolled through his playlist, thumb moving lazily while music filled his ears. He looked completely unbothered—like someone who had nowhere urgent to be.

A few steps away, a girl stood beneath the shade of a nearby awning, a slim side bag hanging neatly at her hip. She tapped at her phone with visible annoyance.

"Seriously…?" she muttered, tapping the screen again when it didn't respond fast enough. "You send me out here and don't even give me a description?"

She exhaled softly through her nose, lifting her head to scan the plaza with measured patience.

"I was told to meet him here," she added under her breath, tone smooth but edged with quiet irritation. "Would it have been so difficult to mention height? Hair? Anything useful?"

Her eyes drifted across the fountain, the benches, the moving crowd.

"Now then… which one are you?" she murmured, more thoughtful now than frustrated.

Her gaze settled on the boy by the fountain—headphones on, posture relaxed, completely absorbed in whatever was playing through his phone.

She froze for half a second. "…You're kidding." Recognition flickered across her expression.

"That's the transfer student?" she said softly to herself. "The one from last night?"

A faint sigh slipped past her lips as she adjusted the strap of her bag.

"I actually bumped into him in the hallway… and now I'm supposed to greet him like this?" Her tone shifted, quieter, almost embarrassed. "How… inconvenient."

She straightened slightly, smoothing out her composure before stepping forward.

"Well," she muttered lightly, a subtle confidence returning to her voice, "this just became a bit of an issue."

Before walking over, she paused for a moment and took a slow breath, steadying herself. She adjusted a loose strand of hair so it framed her face properly instead of falling forward too sharply. No need to look confrontational over something this simple.

Composure restored, she stepped toward him and lifted a hand in a small, casual greeting.

"Hey," she called, voice smooth but direct. "You're Takumi, right? The transfer student Mr. Mozen mentioned?"

Takumi glanced up at the sound of his name. He slipped his phone into his pocket and slid his headphones down around his neck in one fluid motion. His eyes met hers—and recognition flickered there for just a second.

He remembered her. The hallway. The brief collision. And the subtle detail he hadn't forgotten.

Still, his expression remained calm.

"Alyssa, right?" he replied evenly. "Mrs. Dahlia mentioned your name." He tilted his head slightly. "Didn't expect you to be the one showing me around."

She gave a small nod and stepped closer, her posture relaxed now that the awkward distance was gone.

"Yeah, that's me. Though, you can just call me Lyss." A faint, almost sheepish breath escaped her. "And… about yesterday—sorry for running into you like that. I was late for class."

Takumi finally looked at her properly.

Honey-blonde hair framed her face, flowing past her shoulders with lighter ends that caught the daylight. A thin braid curved along one side before blending into the rest, part of it gathered into a loose side bun secured with a teal clasp. It looked effortless—but deliberate.

Her eyes were a clear, striking blue, sharp and observant beneath a faint, knowing smile.

She wore a white turtleneck under a cropped black jacket, silver zippers glinting softly. A small gold pendant rested at her collarbone. Blue jeans and a relaxed posture completed the look—casual, confident, controlled.

Takumi said nothing, but he noticed everything. He lifted a hand lightly. "It's fine."

Lyss adjusted the strap of her bag and glanced around the plaza, fountain water shimmering behind them. "By the way," she added casually, "are you more of a tea person or coffee? I was about to grab some tea before Mozen told me to come find you. Figured I'd wait it out in that café over there." She tilted her head slightly. "Since you're already here… want to join?"

Takumi studied her expression for a moment. The smile, the ease in her posture—she looked like any other student killing time after class. And yet, he couldn't shake the feeling that there was more beneath the surface.

"Yeah," he replied at last. "Coffee sounds good."

Warm drinks had always helped him think. Lyss's smile brightened just a touch. "Perfect," she said. "We can talk on the way."

As they headed toward the café on the upper level of the street, Lyss walked slightly ahead before turning to face him, keeping pace without breaking stride.

"I noticed you had your headphones in earlier," she said, a hint of curiosity in her tone. "What do you usually listen to? I don't have mine on right now, but I'm basically attached to them. Music helps me focus."

Takumi found himself relaxing a little. The first time they'd crossed paths had been awkward—tense, even—but this felt different. He still had his suspicions, but nothing concrete. And right now, she just seemed… normal.

"Hip-hop, J-Pop, regular pop," he replied. "Some jazz too. And R&B."

Lyss nodded approvingly. "Good taste," she said lightly. "I'm more into electronic and techno myself. But I listen to hip-hop and jazz a lot too." She glanced at him with a warm expression. "Guess we overlap more than I expected."

She offered him an easy, genuine smile—eyes briefly closing in a soft curve—just as they reached the entrance to the café.

When they stepped inside the café, it took a few minutes to find a quiet corner table. Soon enough, steam curled gently from two cups—coffee in front of Takumi, tea before Lyss.

Lyss lifted her cup slightly, inhaling the aroma with clear appreciation. "This blend never disappoints," she said softly. "You should try it sometime. The Institute runs on hourly rotations, so you actually get proper breaks. Thirty minutes sounds short, but with the market this close, it's more than enough."

Takumi listened, then took a slow sip of his coffee. The warmth settled comfortably as he placed the cup back down. "That's already more downtime than my old school gave us," he admitted, glancing around as customers filtered in and out.

"The Institute demands a lot," Lyss replied, resting her chin lightly against her hand. "Training, resonance control, field simulations. If they didn't extend the breaks, everyone would burn out." She gave a small shrug. "Letting students step outside—grab a drink, walk through the market—keeps their heads clear. It's a smart system."

Takumi gave a faint nod. It wasn't what he expected from a place built around fighting monsters, but it made sense.

"Do you already know which class you'll be placed in once you officially start?" Lyss asked, resting her chin lightly against her hand. "That's tomorrow, right?"

Takumi gave a small shake of his head. "Not yet. They've only talked to me about the dorm so far." He took another sip of his coffee before setting the cup down. "From what I heard, most of the dorms across the Vanguard districts are already packed, so I'm basically getting whatever space is still open."

He shrugged slightly. "Class assignment's still up in the air. Guess I'll find out when they decide where I fit."

Bet. We're keeping it natural. No edgy "you observe first, strike later" anime fortune-cookie lines. Real teenagers. Real flow.

Here's the adjusted version, smoother and less try-hard:

---

Lyss leaned back in her chair, slowly swirling what was left of her tea as she looked at him with quiet curiosity.

"So you're transferring without even knowing your class yet?" she asked. "New academy, new dorm, and you're just going with it like it's no big deal."

Takumi rested his elbow lightly on the table. "It's kind of too late to overthink it now. Everything moved fast. I'll figure it out as I go."

"That's… bold," she said with a faint smile. "Most people would be stressing."

"I probably will. Just not out loud."

She gave a soft hum of acknowledgment. "You don't talk much about what's on your mind, do you?"

"Depends who's asking."

That earned a small laugh from her.

The conversation drifted into easier topics after that. Lyss pointed out a few spots around the market students liked—places that were good for studying, places that were too loud, and one tiny bakery that apparently sold out before noon every single day.

"You've clearly done your research," Takumi said.

"I like knowing what's around me," she replied casually. "Makes life smoother."

He nodded. "I used to run track after school. Guess now I'll just run to the monorail instead."

She blinked. "You actually enjoy that?"

"It clears my head."

"Couldn't be me," she said, amused. "I prefer music and a comfortable chair."

"Fair."

By the time their cups were empty, the café had filled up. Chairs scraped softly against the floor as more students came in, laughter mixing with the low hum of conversation.

Takumi instinctively reached for his wallet, but Lyss was already standing with the receipt in hand.

"You don't have to," he said.

"I know," she replied lightly. "I invited you. So I'm paying."

There wasn't any dramatic back-and-forth about it. She handled it quickly at the counter and returned with her bag resting at her side again.

"You can get the next one," she added as they stepped outside.

"That's fair."

They moved back into the open market street, the fountain reflecting afternoon light across the pavement. For a moment, everything felt normal—almost too normal compared to everything that had happened.

Lyss adjusted the strap of her bag. "If we leave now, we'll catch the next monorail without having to rush."

Takumi slipped his hands into his pockets and walked beside her.
