Chapter 8 - CHAPTER 7

The seventh moon rose like a wounded eye, glowing blood-red through the clouds that churned above Eldoria. The entire sky felt heavy, sagging under the weight of something ancient and merciless.

Elara and Arin stood at the edge of the lake where they first met—where their laughter once danced across the water, where their promises once felt unbreakable.

Now, the air around them pulsed with the curse's hunger.

Arin's body trembled violently, the dark sigil on his arm burning brighter with every passing second. His veins blazed black, spreading like smoke beneath his skin.

"Elara…" he gasped, gripping his chest. "I can barely hold it back."

She reached for him, and pain stabbed through her like a spear, but she did not stop. Tears blurred her vision as she cupped his face as best the curse allowed.

"Arin, stay with me. We'll find another way."

His smile was broken, fragile. "There is no time. You heard what the oracle said."

"I don't care!" she cried. "I'm not losing you."

His breathing grew rough, uneven.

"Elara… the curse is taking my mind. If I lose control… if I become that monster…"

"You're not a monster!" she screamed.

But even as she said it, the wind around him twisted unnaturally. Shadows rose from the ground, coiling around Arin's legs like serpents. His eyes flickered—gold to black, gold to black—fighting for dominance.

"Elara…" he choked, "run."

"No."

Her voice broke.

"I won't leave you."

The seventh moon glowed brighter. Its crimson light struck Arin like a blade, forcing him to his knees. He clawed at the earth, teeth gritted in agony as his body convulsed.

"Elara—" he gasped, "the mirror—use the mirror!"

She fumbled for the cracked mirror the oracle gave them before disappearing. Its surface shimmered faintly with a silver glow.

"What do I do with it?" she cried.

"Choose!" Arin shouted, voice distorted by the curse's grip. "Either break the bond… or break me!"

Her heart splintered.

"No… I can't choose between losing you or killing you!"

The ground shook violently. The lake water churned like a beast awakening. The spirits trapped within the curse howled through the wind, forming a whirlwind around Arin.

"Elara…" Arin's voice softened—barely human now, barely his. "Look at me."

She forced her eyes to meet his.

"I love you," he whispered. "I always have."

"Don't say goodbye," she pleaded. "Don't you dare."

He smiled weakly.

"This curse was never meant to be broken by power," he said. "It was meant to be broken by loss."

She shook her head, sobbing. "No. No. No!"

His body jerked violently—shadows crawling up his spine, twisting his posture, stretching his limbs. His breath turned into growls. His eyes went fully black.

"Elara!" he screamed. "Do it now! Before I become something that can't love you anymore!"

The mirror glowed brighter, responding to her tears.

"Elara," the oracle's voice whispered from the glass, "if you break the mirror, the bond will sever. The curse will die… but so will your love."

She felt the truth hit her like a blade.

To save Arin's life, she must lose him forever.

He would live—but he would never remember her.

Their marriage. Their love. Their story.

Their bond would shatter like glass.

Or—

She could keep him. Keep his love.

And watch him die.

"Elara…" Arin rasped, voice fading into something monstrous. "Please… choose the pain that leaves me alive."

Her hands shook so violently she almost dropped the mirror.

"Arin…" she whispered, "I can't live without you."

"You can," he whispered. "But I can't live as a monster."

Shadows wrapped around him, lifting him from the ground. His scream wasn't human anymore—it was the cry of something losing its soul.

"Elara!"

His voice broke at the end, desperate.

"I LOVE YOU! PLEASE!"

Her heart tore open.

Her knees buckled.

Her hands rose.

And with a scream that shattered the sky—

She smashed the mirror against a stone.

It exploded in a burst of silver light.

The shadows around Arin screamed.

The sigil on his arm sparked violently.

The curse roared like a dying beast.

And then—

Everything went silent.

Arin collapsed to the ground, unconscious. His blackened veins faded. The darkness drained from him like ink sinking into the earth.

The curse was gone.

Elara crawled to him, hands shaking. "Arin… Arin, wake up."

He stirred, eyes fluttering open.

But when they finally focused on her…

they held no recognition.

"Who… are you?" he asked softly.

Elara's world shattered.

"It's me," she whispered, voice trembling. "It's Elara."

He blinked, confusion clouding his gaze. "Elara…? I'm sorry. I… I don't know that name."

Her throat closed.

"You saved me," he added, sitting up slowly. "Thank you. But… why are you crying?"

Because I lost you.

Because I chose to let you live without me.

Because loving you was the curse and the cure.

She forced a smile, even as tears streamed uncontrollably.

"No reason," she whispered. "I'm just… relieved you're alive."

He nodded gently, unaware of the heartbreak he was staring at.

"What happens now?" he asked softly.

Elara wiped her tears with trembling hands.

"Now…"

Her voice cracked.

"You go home. You're free."

"And you?" he asked.

She looked at the lake—at their memories carved into the water, now belonging to only one of them.

"I'll find my own path."

He hesitated as if something deep inside him was reaching for her, but the bond was gone—broken like the mirror.

"I hope… whoever you are," he said gently, "that life is kind to you."

She swallowed her pain and nodded.

"And I hope yours is full of joy," she whispered. "You deserve it."

He smiled—softly, politely, like a stranger.

Then he walked away, leaving footprints on the shore they once claimed as theirs.

Elara watched him disappear into the forest, each step pulling her heart apart.

The seventh moon dimmed.

The wind fell silent.

And the world moved on.

But Elara remained by the lake, her tears falling into the water—ripples echoing the love she lost to save the man she couldn't live without.

A couple bound by a curse.

A love broken to preserve a life.

A story ending where it began—

By the lake of Eldoria.

And though Arin forgot her,

Elara would carry him

for the rest of her days.

The curse was gone.

But the heartbreak lived on.
