Chapter 53 - Chapter 52: The Truth in the Dark

The conference hall was supposed to be serious.

At least, that was what Yerin had told herself.

She sat at the long table near the front, listening to another presentation about urban development while quietly scrolling through the notes on her tablet.

Beside her, Ji-hoon leaned slightly toward her.

"You're bored."

Yerin didn't look at him.

"I'm listening."

"You've been staring at the same slide for three minutes."

"I'm analyzing it."

Ji-hoon glanced at the screen.

"The slide says 'Thank You.'"

Yerin finally looked at him.

"Exactly. Very important information."

Ji-hoon tried not to laugh.

Across the table, Do-hyun noticed.

He lowered his eyes, hiding a small smile.

Ji-hoon leaned closer.

"You know, for a CEO, you're surprisingly bad at pretending to pay attention."

Yerin whispered,

"And for someone who just came back from months overseas, you're surprisingly annoying."

"I missed you too."

Yerin rolled her eyes.

Do-hyun quietly said,

"Can both of you stop?"

Ji-hoon looked at him.

"You sound like an exhausted father."

Do-hyun stared at him.

"Don't start."

Yerin covered her mouth, trying not to laugh.

For a few seconds, the three of them looked like ordinary friends sitting through an ordinary conference.

Almost.

Because none of them had forgotten what had been happening behind the scenes.

The missing staff.

The phones.

The strange messages.

The restricted areas.

And the unanswered questions surrounding the death of Yerin's grandmother.

Months had passed.

But the investigation had never truly stopped.

Neither had Yerin.

She had changed during those months.

Not because she had become colder.

Because she had learned how to control the coldness already inside her.

As CEO of Archtechs, she had built a reputation quickly.

She was respectful.

Professional.

Fair.

She never crossed boundaries with her employees.

She listened.

She gave people opportunities.

But betrayal was different.

People who crossed that line rarely received a second chance.

Her calmness had become part of her reputation.

Her silence was often more intimidating than anger.

And tonight...

That silence was going to matter.

The conference had barely ended when Yerin's phone rang.

She glanced at the screen.

One of the mansion's security officers.

Her expression immediately changed.

She answered.

"Yes?"

There was a pause.

Then the officer spoke.

"Madam, we've found them."

Yerin stopped walking.

"Found who?"

"The two missing staff members."

Do-hyun, standing beside her, immediately looked over.

Ji-hoon's expression hardened.

Yerin's voice became quieter.

"Where?"

"An old basement facility beneath one of the estate's unused properties."

Yerin's eyes narrowed.

"Are they alive?"

"Yes."

"Anyone else?"

"No, ma'am."

Yerin looked at Do-hyun.

He already understood.

"Keep them there," she said.

"Don't question them."

A pause.

"Understood."

Yerin ended the call.

Ji-hoon stepped closer.

"Finally."

Yerin slipped her phone into her coat pocket.

"Let's go."

It was almost midnight when they arrived.

The old property was surrounded by darkness.

The security team had already secured the area.

Two guards stood outside the basement entrance.

Yerin walked down the stairs without saying a word.

Her heels echoed against the concrete.

Step.

Step.

Step.

The deeper she went, the quieter everything became.

Do-hyun followed directly behind her.

Ji-hoon remained upstairs with the security team, reviewing the information they had collected.

At the bottom of the stairs, Yerin stopped.

A large metal door stood ahead.

One of the guards opened it.

Darkness filled the room.

Two figures sat on chairs in the center.

Their hands were restrained.

Their faces were covered.

Yerin walked toward them.

Do-hyun stopped a few steps behind her.

She looked at the guards.

Then gave the smallest movement of her eyes.

The guards immediately understood.

They removed the coverings from both faces.

Kim Soo-jin blinked against the light.

Beside her sat Park Dae-ho.

Neither looked at Yerin.

Neither spoke.

Yerin slowly walked toward the chair placed in front of them.

She sat.

Her posture was perfectly straight.

She wore a fitted, hourglass-cut tailored coat with matching trousers, the sharp silhouette making her look every bit like the CEO people had learned not to underestimate.

Do-hyun stood behind her chair.

Silent.

Watching.

Yerin looked from one missing staff member to the other.

Then she spoke.

Three words.

"Spill out the truth."

Silence.

Soo-jin looked down.

Dae-ho stared at the floor.

Yerin waited.

Five seconds.

Ten.

Nothing.

A faint smile appeared on her face.

It wasn't a warm smile.

It was the kind that made people wish she hadn't smiled at all.

"You've had months to prepare your story."

Neither moved.

"So I'm giving you one chance."

Still nothing.

Yerin stood.

She walked toward Soo-jin.

The woman finally looked up.

Yerin's expression remained calm.

"You disappeared from my estate."

Silence.

"You left behind phones you weren't even allowed to have."

Soo-jin swallowed.

Yerin noticed.

"And you expect me to believe that was an accident?"

Nothing.

Yerin's voice became sharper.

"Speak."

Soo-jin looked away.

Yerin's patience disappeared.

She struck the table beside the woman hard enough to make her flinch.

"Don't mistake my patience for weakness."

Do-hyun remained behind her.

His expression gave nothing away.

Yerin turned toward Dae-ho.

"And you?"

Nothing.

"You asked questions about the old security system."

No answer.

"You were seen near the security panel."

Still nothing.

"You disappeared."

Silence.

Yerin laughed quietly.

"Interesting."

She turned toward the guards.

"Take them somewhere they'll understand the seriousness of this conversation."

The guards stepped forward.

Soo-jin immediately lifted her head.

"Wait."

Yerin stopped.

Soo-jin's voice trembled.

"I'll talk."

Yerin slowly turned back.

The room became silent.

She looked toward the guards.

Then gave them a small signal.

She walked closer to Soo-jin.

"Start."

Soo-jin took a shaky breath.

"I didn't poison anyone."

Yerin's expression didn't change.

"I never said you did."

Soo-jin froze.

Yerin smiled faintly.

"Continue."

Soo-jin looked toward Dae-ho.

He immediately shook his head.

"Don't."

Soo-jin's eyes filled with fear.

"We were contacted."

"By whom?"

"I don't know."

"Name."

"I never knew his name."

Yerin folded her arms.

"Then describe him."

Soo-jin hesitated.

"He contacted us through an old number."

"Why?"

"He wanted information."

"What information?"

"The mansion."

Yerin's eyes narrowed.

"Security?"

Soo-jin nodded.

"Schedules. Entrances. Which cameras were active."

Do-hyun stepped forward slightly.

"And the restricted entrance?"

Soo-jin looked at him.

"Yes."

"Why?"

"We were told to find a way to get someone inside."

Yerin's expression became colder.

"Someone?"

Soo-jin nodded.

"But we never saw them."

"Then why did you help?"

Soo-jin looked down.

"Because we were threatened."

Yerin stared at her.

"With what?"

"My family."

The room went silent.

Yerin's eyes hardened.

"Who threatened you?"

"I don't know."

She shook her head quickly.

"I swear."

Yerin watched her carefully.

Then turned toward Dae-ho.

"And you?"

He remained silent.

Soo-jin whispered,

"Tell them."

Dae-ho looked at her.

"Stop."

Yerin's gaze moved between them.

"What are you hiding?"

Dae-ho finally looked at Yerin.

"We weren't working together."

Yerin's eyes narrowed.

"Explain."

"I was investigating the security system."

"Why?"

"Because I knew someone had been using the mansion's systems."

Do-hyun immediately asked,

"How long did you know?"

Dae-ho hesitated.

"Months."

Yerin's expression hardened.

"And you said nothing?"

"I was trying to find proof."

"Instead, you disappeared."

Dae-ho lowered his head.

"I was caught."

"By whom?"

"I don't know."

Yerin stared at him.

For the first time, something in his expression looked genuine.

Fear.

But there was still something missing.

One piece.

One name.

Yerin walked toward him.

"You know more."

Dae-ho said nothing.

"You've been protecting someone."

Nothing.

Yerin stopped in front of him.

"Who?"

He looked directly into her eyes.

"I can't."

Yerin's face became completely expressionless.

"Then you have nothing left to tell me."

Dae-ho swallowed.

Yerin turned toward the guards.

"Take him away."

Soo-jin suddenly spoke.

"Wait!"

Yerin looked back.

Soo-jin's voice broke.

"I know who he was protecting."

Dae-ho's eyes widened.

"Don't."

Yerin turned toward her.

"Then tell me."

Soo-jin hesitated.

Then whispered the name.

Yerin went completely still.

Do-hyun's expression changed.

Neither spoke for several seconds.

Because the name wasn't a stranger.

It was someone connected to the Hwang family.

Someone who should never have been involved.

Dae-ho immediately looked away.

Yerin slowly approached him.

"You knew."

He said nothing.

"You knew exactly who was behind this."

Still nothing.

Yerin's voice dropped.

"And you chose to stay silent."

Dae-ho remained silent.

Yerin looked at the guards.

"Take him."

They stepped forward.

Dae-ho resisted verbally, refusing to cooperate.

But Yerin didn't raise her voice.

She didn't need to.

"Remove him."

The guards escorted him out of the room.

The metal door closed behind them.

Soo-jin remained seated.

Yerin turned back to her.

"You're going to tell me everything."

Soo-jin nodded.

"Yes."

"From the beginning."

"I will."

Yerin looked at Do-hyun.

He gave her a small nod.

They finally had a direction.

After months of searching...

They finally had one.

Back at the Mansion

It was past one in the morning when they returned.

Yerin stepped through the front door, exhausted.

Do-hyun followed behind her.

Neither noticed the light coming from the lounge.

Until a familiar voice said,

"You're both home very late."

Do-hyun stopped.

His eyes widened.

"Mom?"

His mother stood from the sofa.

She smiled.

"I wanted to surprise you."

For a second, Do-hyun simply stared.

Then he walked toward her and hugged her.

She laughed softly and hugged him back.

"You've gotten taller."

"Mom, I'm not twelve."

"I can still say it."

She pulled away and looked at him.

Then her eyes moved toward Yerin.

"Come here."

Yerin smiled and stepped closer.

Do-hyun's mother immediately hugged her.

"I missed you."

Yerin's expression softened.

"I missed you too."

His mother held her for another moment before stepping back.

Then she noticed something.

A dark stain near the side of Yerin's shirt.

Her expression changed.

"Yerin."

Yerin looked down.

Do-hyun immediately stepped in.

"She got hurt."

His mother looked worried.

"What happened?"

"Nothing serious."

"Are you sure?"

Yerin nodded.

"I'm fine."

Do-hyun's mother studied her face.

Then sighed.

"You two have to be more careful."

Do-hyun nodded.

"We will."

She looked at Yerin again.

"Go upstairs and rest."

Yerin gave a tired smile.

"Okay."

The moment the bedroom door closed behind them, the exhaustion finally caught up with Yerin.

She dropped her bag beside the chair.

Do-hyun removed his coat.

Neither spoke.

The silence felt different tonight.

Not peaceful.

Heavy.

They had answers.

But somehow, those answers had only created more questions.

Yerin walked toward the bed.

"Do-hyun."

"Hm?"

She stopped.

"We finally found them."

"Yes."

"And we finally know someone was behind everything."

"Yes."

She turned toward him.

"But I don't feel relieved."

Do-hyun looked at her.

"Because this isn't over."

Yerin nodded.

"Exactly."

She took another step.

Then suddenly stopped.

Her balance shifted.

Do-hyun's expression changed.

"Yerin?"

She didn't answer.

Her eyes lost focus.

Do-hyun moved toward her immediately.

"Yerin."

She tried to steady herself.

"I..."

Her voice faded.

Do-hyun caught her before she could fall.

"Yerin!"

Her eyes closed.

For the first time in months, the woman who had faced boardrooms, enemies, secrets, threats, and impossible decisions without showing fear...

had finally reached her limit.

Do-hyun held her carefully.

"Yerin."

No response.

His face tightened with worry.

He looked toward the door.

Then back at her.

And whispered,

"What happened to you?"

The room fell silent.

Outside, the mansion remained still.

But inside...

something had changed.

Because whatever had been hunting them for months was no longer the only thing they had to fear.
