Chapter 8 - ELUSIVE BOSS APPROVAL

Zoe stood in front of Stacy's desk, heart pounding as she presented her work. The market research report and the brand concept deck were spread out before her—every insight carefully analyzed, every slide crafted to tell a compelling story. This wasn't just a routine update; it was the foundation for the company's next big strategy, born from countless late nights, revisions, and creative debates.

Stacy listened, arms folded, expression unreadable.

When Zoe finished, Stacy leaned back, fingers steepled, eyes narrowing thoughtfully.

"The market research is solid," Stacy said, voice calm but measured. "Your analysis of the emerging customer segments is spot on, and I like how you tied it into the brand concept. The deck really captures the vision we need to push forward."

Zoe blinked, caught off guard by the rare praise. "Thank you. I was worried the new brand positioning might be a stretch without stronger data support."

Stacy's gaze didn't waver. "You grounded it well with the recent consumer trends and competitor analysis. Just make the changes I mentioned—clarify the assumptions behind the growth projections in the report, and tighten the visuals on slides five and seven."

Zoe barely contained her grin. "Got it. That means a lot coming from you."

She barely made it to the door before she was practically shouting, "Yes!" and bouncing on the balls of her feet in the hallway.

Her coworkers glanced up, surprised but smiling at her outburst. This was the moment Zoe had been waiting for—the elusive boss approval on her biggest project yet.

Back inside, Stacy watched Zoe's retreating figure, a faint shadow of a smile tugging at her lips.

Startled by the unexpected warmth blooming inside her, she lingered longer than usual.

That smile—rare and unspoken—was something she never shared lightly, especially not during a relentless workday.

Then, picking up her phone, she spoke quietly, "Send her home early."

Because maybe, just maybe, Zoe deserved it.

And maybe a rare moment of empathy breaking through her usual hard exterior.

Flushed with victory, Zoe entered the private office where her team waited, her heart still racing with excitement. The weight of the day finally lifting, she could hardly contain herself.

"We actually did it," Zoe breathed, barely able to keep the excitement out of her voice. "I can't believe the report and the deck landed so well."

Steven grinned, clapping her on the back with genuine warmth. "Zoe, you saved this team. Without your market research and that brand concept deck, half of us would've been out the door by now."

Noah nodded, his usually quiet demeanor softened with sincere appreciation. "Yeah, your hard work didn't just keep us afloat—it carried all of us through the storm."

Jenny smirked, folding her arms playfully. "So, what's Ms. Holloway's secret? You must've made it onto her radar now."

Before Zoe could reply, her phone on the desk rang sharply, slicing through the moment.

She glanced at the caller ID—The General Manager. With a quick breath, she answered, "Hello, Sir?"

"Zoe, I just wanted to let you know—you can head home early today. You've earned it," came the warm, official voice on the other end.

A genuine smile spread across Zoe's face as she hung up, then turned back to her team, eyes shining.

"Guess what? I'm being sent home early. Ms. Holloway really appreciates the work."

Jenny laughed, nudging Zoe with a grin. "Look at you—getting the VIP treatment already."

Steven shook his head, a proud smile tugging at his lips. "Enjoy it. You've earned every minute."

Noah added quietly, "You deserve this, Zoe. More than anyone."

Laughter filled the room, washing away the last of the tension and uncertainty.

Zoe looked around at her team—her people—and felt a surge of gratitude welling up inside. She hadn't just saved a report or a proposal; she'd saved their jobs, their futures.

"We're stronger than ever," Zoe said, voice steady and sure. "And we're going to keep proving it."

Steven raised an imaginary glass with a grin. "To Zoe—the heart and brains of this operation."

They all raised their invisible glasses, the private office humming with celebration, hope, and the quiet promise of what lay ahead.
