Chapter 22 - Dark's Grind To Becoming Stronger.

Dark closed the quest menu, his mind buzzing with anticipation. The Hidden Cavern of Shadows awaited, and despite the ominous warning, he felt confident in his abilities. With his newfound speed and determination, he set off towards the forest once more, intent on proving his strength.

The journey to the cavern was swift, his enhanced speed cutting the travel time significantly. As he arrived at the entrance, the ominous aura of the place was palpable. Shadows seemed to dance along the walls, whispering secrets and threats.

Dark: (thinking) This is it. Time to see what I'm truly capable of.

He stepped into the cavern, the air growing colder and the darkness more oppressive with each step. The walls were lined with ancient symbols that glowed faintly, casting eerie patterns on the floor. He could hear the distant sound of water dripping and the occasional echo of something moving in the shadows.

Dark: (thinking) Focus. I need to stay sharp.

As he ventured deeper, he encountered the first challenge. A group of shadow creatures similar to the ones he fought in the forest emerged, their eyes glowing with malevolence. Dark drew his sword, ready to face them.

Dark: (thinking) Let's see if this new system really gives me an edge.

The creatures lunged at him, but Dark's increased speed allowed him to dodge their attacks with ease. He countered with swift, precise strikes, each blow landing with deadly accuracy. Within moments, the creatures were defeated, dissolving into wisps of darkness.

Dark: (thinking) That was easy. Maybe this quest isn't as tough as it seems.

He pressed on, navigating the labyrinthine passages of the cavern. The further he went, the more challenging the enemies became. Larger shadow beasts and traps designed to catch the unwary tested his skills and reflexes. Despite the increasing difficulty, Dark felt exhilarated, each victory a testament to his growing power.

Dark: (thinking) This is what I needed. A real challenge to push me to my limits.

At the heart of the cavern, he found a massive chamber illuminated by a faint, otherworldly light. In the center stood an ancient pedestal, and on it rested the artifact he sought—the Shadow Blade. The blade pulsed with dark energy, a weapon of immense power.

As Dark walked closer to the blade, his foot inadvertently pressed down on a concealed pressure plate. The plate descended with a soft, mechanical click, setting off a series of ancient mechanisms hidden within the walls. The chamber began to shift and expand, the stone walls groaning and sliding apart to create a vast, cavernous space. The Shadow Blade, previously within arm's reach, slowly glided forward, carried on an unseen conveyor deeper into the darkened expanse, just out of Dark's grasp.

From the newly revealed depths of the chamber, a figure began to materialize, rising from the stone floor as if being birthed from the very earth itself. Its emergence was accompanied by a low, mournful hum, echoing through the expansive hall. The figure clung to the edges of the artifact table, using it to pull itself free from the ground. Its movements were slow and laborious, betraying a great weariness.

The figure's voice, when it spoke, carried a blend of emotions—disappointment, dryness, exhaustion, sadness, and a simmering anger. It was the voice of something ancient and dying, yet still filled with a smoldering rage.

Shadow: Oh....

The shadowy entity looked at Dark, its expression one of deep, frowning sorrow. Slowly, it stood to its full height, a towering presence that filled the room with an oppressive aura.

Shadow: Foul trespasser.... Why thy trespasser?... why?....

Dark: (thinking) Huh? It can speak? What?

Dark: Eh?

The Shadow's eyes, or the empty voids where eyes should be, seemed to pierce through Dark, filled with a mixture of pain and accusation.

Shadow: Why trespass into my heart?... why thou.... No matter....

The figure paused, gathering its strength before slowly wrapping its long, clawed fingers around the hilt of the Shadow Blade. The blade responded to its touch, the dark energy pulsing more intensely.

Shadow: Thus who trespasses into my heart, shall all meet... destined death.

Suddenly, through Dark's perspective, a health bar materialized above the shadowy figure. The bar was colored black and red, its edges burning with an eerie, otherworldly fire.

Dark: (thinking) A health bar? What kind of creature is this?

The health bar indicated a level of threat unlike any Dark had encountered before. The colors and the burning edges signified something extraordinarily dangerous.

In this world, threats and rankings were categorized by color levels, a system designed to indicate the potential danger of creatures and entities.

Color Levels of Threats:

1. Light Green: Creatures and entities that are low level and friendly, not hostile. Typically harmless and often helpful.

2. Normal Green: Low-level creatures that are generally non-hostile unless provoked. They can defend themselves but are not aggressive.

3. Yellow: Moderate threats, capable of attacking if threatened or disturbed. Caution is advised when approaching.

4. Orange: High-level threats that are actively hostile and aggressive. These creatures pose a significant danger and should be approached with preparation and caution.

5. Red: Severe threats, highly dangerous and aggressive. These entities are powerful and can cause great harm. Engagement should be avoided unless absolutely necessary.

6. Dark Red: Extremely severe threats, entities of immense power and malevolence. Only the most skilled and prepared should consider confronting these.

7. Purple: Legendary threats, often ancient and of vast power. These entities can shape the course of battles and are rarely encountered.

8. Black: Mythical threats, shrouded in mystery and darkness. Few have faced these and lived to tell the tale.

9. Black Fire: The highest level of threat, beings of almost unimaginable power and danger. Their very presence distorts reality, and they are nearly unstoppable.

Dark: (thinking) This one... it's at the Black Fire level. This is going to be a lot harder than I thought.

Despite the daunting realization, a part of Dark's mind was already strategizing, calculating how he could leverage his new abilities against this formidable foe. The stakes were high, but so was his determination.

Dark readied his sword, the weight of the task ahead pressing down on him. He knew that this battle would be unlike any he had faced before, but he was resolved to see it through, to test the limits of his strength and the new system that governed this world.

Dark: (thinking) I have to be smart about this. One wrong move and it's over.

As the shadowy figure gripped the Shadow Blade tighter, the air around them crackled with dark energy, the chamber itself seeming to pulse in time with the figure's heartbeat. Dark could feel the oppressive aura growing stronger, pressing against his very soul.

The fight for the Shadow Blade was about to begin, and with it, the true test of Dark's newfound power.

The shadowy figure moved first, swinging the Shadow Blade with a speed and precision that belied its heavy, cumbersome appearance. The blade cut through the air with a hiss, a dark energy trailing behind it like a spectral tail. Dark barely managed to dodge the initial strike, feeling the cold bite of the blade's energy as it passed inches from his face.

Dark: (thinking) That was close. I need to stay on my toes.

Dark quickly retaliated, his own sword flashing in the dim light of the cavern. He aimed for the shadowy figure's torso, hoping to exploit any weakness. But the figure was fast—unnaturally fast. It parried his blow with ease, countering with a brutal swipe that forced Dark to leap back.

Shadow: Thou art persistent... but futile.

The shadow's voice was a low, guttural growl, filled with disdain and an ancient sadness. It moved with a fluid grace, its form shifting and twisting in the dim light, making it hard to predict its next move.

Dark took a moment to assess his situation. He couldn't match the figure's speed and power directly. He needed to find a way to outmaneuver it, to use his agility and newfound speed to his advantage.

Dark: (thinking) I have to be smarter, faster. I can't let it corner me.

He darted to the side, moving quickly to flank the shadow. He struck out with his sword, aiming for the joints and weaker points of its form. The figure grunted in annoyance, but each hit Dark landed seemed to do little more than irritate it. Its health bar barely budged.

Shadow: Thou art weak... unworthy of the blade.

The figure's words stung, but they also fueled Dark's determination. He wasn't about to give up. He circled the figure, looking for an opening. The shadow watched him with those piercing voids where eyes should be, its grip on the Shadow Blade tightening.

Suddenly, the figure lunged, its movements a blur. Dark barely had time to react. He brought his sword up to block, but the force of the impact sent him skidding backwards, his feet digging into the stone floor to stop his momentum. The shadow pressed the attack, relentless and unforgiving.

Dark: (thinking) I need to find its weak spot. There has to be one.

As he fended off the shadow's attacks, Dark noticed something. Every time the figure struck, there was a moment—a fraction of a second—where its core, the source of its power, seemed to pulse with a faint, dark light. It was almost imperceptible, but it was there.

Dark: (thinking) That's it. That's my target.

With renewed focus, Dark adjusted his strategy. He dodged and weaved, avoiding the shadow's brutal swings while keeping his eyes on the core. He needed to time his attacks perfectly.

The shadow let out a roar of frustration, its form growing more volatile, its attacks more erratic. Dark used this to his advantage, exploiting the gaps in its defense. Finally, he saw his chance. The core pulsed again, and Dark struck with all his might, his blade slicing through the air with a precision born of desperation and determination.

His sword connected with the core, and the impact sent a shockwave through the chamber. The shadow let out a piercing scream, its form convulsing as dark energy erupted from the wound. The health bar above it plummeted, and the figure staggered, dropping to one knee.

Shadow: No... this cannot be....

Dark: (thinking) Now's my chance. I have to finish this.

Summoning all his strength, Dark lunged forward, his sword aimed at the core once more. With a final, decisive strike, he drove his blade deep into the shadow's chest. The figure let out one last, anguished cry before disintegrating into a cloud of dark mist.

But just as Dark thought the battle was over, the mist began to coalesce, reforming into a new shape. The shadowy figure reemerged, larger and more menacing, its form now more defined and solid. The health bar reappeared, fully restored and glowing with an even more intense black fire.

Shadow: Thou hast only glimpsed a fraction of my power. Now, witness true despair.

Dark: (thinking) This... this isn't good.

The second form of the shadow was faster, stronger, and more relentless. It attacked with a ferocity that left Dark struggling to keep up. Every move he made seemed futile against the overwhelming power of the shadow.

Dark: (thinking) I'm... not strong enough. I can't... keep up.

Blow after blow landed on Dark, each one sapping his strength and will. The shadow's attacks were unrelenting, a blur of dark energy and fury. Dark's vision began to blur, his body growing weaker with each passing second.

As the shadow prepared to deliver the final blow, a sudden voice echoed in Dark's mind, calm and serene.

???: Would it be thy wish to be born anew?

Two options appeared before his fading vision: "Yes" and "No." A timer began counting down from 10. Dark, barely conscious, struggled to make sense of the choice.

Dark: (thinking) What... what is this?

With the timer ticking down, Dark knew he had to make a decision. His hand trembled as he reached out, the shadow's blade descending upon him. At the last moment, just as the timer hit 1, he chose "Yes."

The screen went black.
