Chapter 8 - Breaking out

Qiao Zhi's jaw tightened. "Then... can she just ride it out? In a cold bath or something?"

It was winter, but with the climate control, they could simulate any environment. It gutted him to think of her in pain, but if there was no other way...

"You could try," He Yibin said with a sharp, mocking edge. Before Qiao Zhi could feel relieved, the doctor added: "If you aren't afraid of her going into shock and dying."

Qiao Zhi choked on his next breath, coughing for several seconds before he could speak again. "Is there truly no other way?"

Liang Jing frantically signaled his cousin to dial back the bluntness.

"None," He Yibin replied, ignoring the hint entirely.

As Liang Jing walked Qiao Zhi out of the lab, he glanced at his friend. "The Shen family... do you need me to step in?"

No one knew the history between Qiao Zhi, Le Xiang, and the Shens better than he did. One could argue that without the Shens, Qiao Zhi would never have joined the military—though his fate might have been far grimmer.

Whatever their motives, the Shens had saved Qiao Zhi once.

Because of that "debt," others in their unit had always looked askance at Qiao Zhi's feelings for Le Xiang. But Liang Jing had never judged him. The Shens only helped Qiao Zhi because of Le Xiang. Therefore, she was more than worthy of Qiao Zhi's devotion.

Despite his high-society roots, Liang Jing didn't care for class hierarchy. A decade of life-and-death missions in the Special Forces had stripped him of any patience for social conventions. In his world, if you were alive and happy, nothing else mattered.

He had missed the chance to help last time. But this time... what Shen Mingyuan had done was genuinely nauseating. He was more than willing to help a brother out.

Qiao Zhi shook his head. "Don't get involved, Captain. I'll handle this my way."

The Shen family was a titan in the political and business sectors, but they had zero reach in the military. They couldn't touch Qiao Zhi as long as Liang Jing protected him. Conversely, while Qiao Zhi's elite unit was highly decorated and favored by the top brass, they held little "administrative" power. He couldn't legally dismantle the Shen empire.

But he didn't want to drag Liang into this. Even for a juggernaut like the Liang family, going to war with the Shens would be costly. Besides, Liang Jing wasn't the head of his household yet.

And... Qiao Zhi didn't care about toppling the Shens. He only cared about destroying Shen Mingyuan.

Liang Jing wasn't surprised by the answer. "I'll arrange for some men to shadow Le Xiang. We can't let a 'next time' happen."

This time, Qiao Zhi didn't refuse. He nodded grimly. "Thank you, Captain. I appreciate it."

Liang Jing sighed. Setting Qiao Zhi's feelings aside, he honestly wanted to suggest that Le Xiang emigrate. The Shens... for all of Shen Mingyuan's incompetence, his parents were sharp as razors. They weren't the type to leave a trail or lose their grip on power anytime soon.

As long as the Shens stood, Shen Mingyuan would remain a ticking time bomb. And as long as Le Xiang remained in the capital, she would never know a moment's peace.
