Chapter 14 - Chapter 13

The battle continues, with a surprise

Five mornings later, the sun rose before the royal couple woke. And Selene forbade anyone from waking them.

Carolyn woke to feel rested and happier. Happier, because Max was there with her. Then her stomach turned and suddenly she darted for the toilet again, forgetting to close the door this time, and emptied what was left in her stomach and more.

Selene hearing this, darts into the room and towards the bathroom, with the nurse following too. After helping her wash her face and mouth, they help Carolyn back to bed, fearing she was sick with the virus.

At the advice of the nurse, they separated the beds a good distance apart and the Palace Doctor was summoned.

Within 3 minutes the Doctor arrived, checked his Queen over, then asked her to pee in a cup with Selene's help as she was weak. After testing it, he smiled and declared. "Your Majesty, while I would need to confirm this via a blood test. I am 90% certain you are with a child. Congratulations. Now, for today, I want you to be in bed on rest, with the pregnancy meds I will arrange for you."

Then he asked the nurse to draw some blood, and smiled as he departed the suite.

"Pregnant! How on earth could I get pregnant?" Carolyn exclaims.

Smiling, Max clears his throat and asks. "Baby, have you been taught the 'Birds and the Bees'?" causing Selene and the Nurse to chock back their laughter. They quickly turned away to look busy.

"Yes, I know about sex and how babies are made, you fool. But how can 'one time' make me pregnant already?"

"One time? You're sure, love? I am sure it was like four times. And it only takes one little man to get all the way home," and the other two were now snorting like pigs. Max smiled at Carolyn, surprisingly enjoying this.

Carolyn, while still in shock and amazement at discovering she was pregnant, was pissed off at Max teasing her like this. So she flung her pillow at him, causing him to laugh. Then Carolyn picks up her tennis shoes and shoots one at Selene, causing her to shriek in shock and pain, only to have the nurse dart from the room in safety.

"You dare laugh at your Queen!" she scolds Selene, only to collapse a moment later laughing at Selene's alarmed face. Selene then tosses the shoe back lightly and Carolyn shrieks. Max, through all this, laughed and laughed.

A short while later, once everyone had calmed down.

"So, pregnant already. I thought it would be a few months before that would happen. Especially as my last injection was 3 months ago. I have it to help with my periods, and I thought it would take about six or more months to wear off. You must be potent!"

Selene chose to leave the room as these two started to throw inappropriate comments to each other, which were not for her ears.

Closing the door, she was shaking her head while smiling when she saw Philip standing there worried. She broke the happy news to him. Ecstatic, he grabs her and kisses her deeply. They stood there hugging, and saying nothing. Just happy and in love.

"Phil, think I could be pregnant too?" she asks while nested against his chest.

"Possible, honey. But give it time" he replies and she nods.

Later, the nurse was allowed back in the room to do her observations. While she also tended her new patient with happiness, administering the pregnancy medicine and ensuring she was comfortable on the bed, after Carolyn changed into some comfortable clothes.

Selene then enters the room and regrettably informs her the PM wishes to have a meeting with her, while Dr van José was arriving shortly too.

Carolyn looks at Max. She was ordered by the Royal Doctor to remain under bed rest for the day. Dr van José will have to meet here in the bedroom.

Carolyn requests if Selene could bring some chairs for him and Mrs Peters too. Also, Selene would need to make herself a mini office in the corner too. As for the PM, she could speak on the phone or video chat via the Zoom app on the TV.

Selene departs to arrange this. And the Nurse quickly arranges Max to look decent.

About a quarter of an hour later, Dr van José, with Mrs Peters and Selene, enters the bedroom.

Selene helps Mrs Peters to sit, while Doctor quickly checks on Max's chart and pronounces he was happy with the progress.

Max asks, "Can we start weaning off the nerve block meds today? To see how bad the pain is and if I could manage it."

Reluctantly, the Doctor consents and saw the last dosage was yesterday morning. "Given your last dosage was yesterday morning, it should already be starting to wean off. Probably by later afternoon or tomorrow morning at the latest. But if the pain starts to get too much, the nurse has full right to administer more without you stopping her, or take morphine as a minor solution."

Max agrees.

"Now onto the other matter regarding Mrs Peters. Ma'am," he speaks to Mrs Peters directly. "Your scans and tests show you are very much long overdue for the replacement. I would like to schedule you to be booked into the hospital today, if possible. As I have a slot open later this afternoon. And, you will need to stay in hospital for a minimal 2-3 days before I am willing to consent to release you to care here in the Palace. Both your knees will have a complete replacement. Bionic knee joints, as just replacing the cartridge will not help, as the bones have started to wear away from rubbing against each other. And both your hips too. I must warn you, this will be a long healing process and you will be in pain for most of the time."

They all nod in understanding.

"On the last matter, Your Highness. I reviewed your last CT scans as we did a full body scan. I noticed your left knee would need a replacement cartridge too. So, I would like to attend to this as soon as possible. But I would prefer you to wait for your back and body to heal first from the last surgery. So, I propose in about six weeks, when we remove the restraining brace I had put in your back, we can look at possibly sorting your knee out then. However, due to the virus, this may be a longer wait. We will see as the time comes."

Max nods and on that note, the Doctor rose to leave but was stopped by Max.

"Doctor, one last thing. Allow me to be the bearer of good news, while we await the blood results. The stick test confirms Her Majesty is pregnant."

And Mrs Peters exclaims with happiness, clapping her hands in joy while the doctor offers his congratulations to them both. He then departs to have a word with the nurses on duty assigned to Max and his mother and the Palace doctor.

"Oh, that is wonderful news, my dears. Really wonderful. I now understand why you are still in bed. You need to rest and build up your strength. Oh, this is happy news. Such happy news."

And with Selene's help, she stood up and walked out of the room with the assistance of the walker.

Smiling after his mother, he shook his head at her. 'Funny woman', he thought and was turning towards Carolyn to invite her closer but she ran for the bathroom again.

Now used to it, she returns, smiling weakly and snuggles up to him, sighing.

"I do hope I am not going to puke every five minutes for months!" and the nurse brought her an anti-nausea tablet and water.

Selene walks into the room, and after finding out Carolyn was suffering from nausea, she debates on the many people who were calling for the Queen. Max saw this, and suggested a quick conference here in the room with the PM to bring them up to speed. After that, Max wanted Carolyn to rest and while she was resting, Max would help where possible.

Carolyn insists. "My mother must be updated too, and let her take some of the load too."

Agreeing on this, Selene departs to first update the Dowager Queen and returns with her.

After hugs and kisses of congrats, they arranged themselves for a conference with the PM.

Carolyn opted to rather sit in a chair that had been set for the conference call than being seen weak in bed. Amelia sat on Max's other side while Selene sat on Carolyn's side while Selene linked up the PM on the TV's Zoom app.

The PM greets them all and before starting the meeting, Max interrupts the P. "Mr Prime Minister. Please excuse us all sitting here in the bedroom. But while I am on the mend, we have happy news that my wife, the Queen, is expecting a child and given a day's rest by the palace doctor."

Surprised and extremely happy with this news, he agrees "Oh, I am so happy for you both. Denmark will be thrilled with this news. If possible, I would gladly help where I can to lessen the load while ensuring you have as much rest as possible."

Carolyn thanked him and said. "My mother will try to take some of the slack on our side until I can get control of this - morning sickness." And! Off she runs for the bathroom.

"My wife had it bad for both of her two pregnancies," said the PM, clearly concerned and caring. "So I can understand what you are going through, and feel for you all."

Carolyn re-joins them apologising.

"Ma'am" and got a glare from Carolyn. "Okay! Carolyn. Happy now?" he relents, smiling and receiving a nod back from her while she rests her head against Max's arm, while holding his hand. "Okay, so onto the latest update…" and the PM updates them on what he knows.

After the update, the conference call was terminated. Amelia, with Selene, forces Carolyn back into bed and orders her to sleep a bit, departing. Max on the other hand, with Carolyn mostly on her side, was semi laying towards him. He uses his left hand to change TV channels and visually watches the updates.
