Chapter 103 - The Choice Is His

Tyler headed for the door. Kai stepped aside to let him through, and Tyler paused just long enough to say, "Don't let them mess it up this time."

"Got it."

"We won't," Chris started, but Tyler was already gone, walking off down the hallway.

Chris watched the empty doorway for a second, then let out a breath and turned to Noah, then Oliver. "Well." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Time to clean up our mess."

The door closed behind Tyler, and for a few seconds none of them moved. Chris stood near the entrance with Noah beside him, Kai a little farther back. Oliver hadn't moved from where Tyler had left him, looking between the three of them like he couldn't decide whether to sit down or bolt.

Chris took a breath. "Oliver."

Oliver's shoulders went tight. Chris raised both hands. "Relax. We're not here to force you to tell us anything." Oliver eyed him warily.

Chris went on, glancing at Noah and Kai. "We're not asking you to explain it again."

"We just want to talk," Noah added.

"You don't understand," Oliver said, looking down.

"Then explain that part."

"No. You really don't understand." His voice was quiet, but there was something firm underneath it. "You don't know how difficult this is."

"Maybe we don't," Chris said, stepping a little closer. "But we're trying to."

Oliver didn't answer.

"Your secret isn't what we're worried about," Chris said carefully, and that got Oliver's eyes back on him. "We don't care about the secret itself. What we care about is Danny using it to control you." Oliver's expression shifted at that. "And while he's doing that, we're the ones getting blamed for something we didn't do."

"That's the problem," Noah said.

Oliver looked away. "I told you already. You should leave it alone."

"Why?"

"Because if you keep getting involved, they'll expose everything." His voice sharpened, more urgent now. "You don't know what they'll do."

Chris let that sit a moment. "And you think letting them keep doing this is better?"

Oliver said nothing.

"They're already spreading rumors about us," Chris pressed. "They're already using your secret against you. How does staying quiet fix anything?"

"It doesn't," Oliver said, immediately. "But making things worse won't help either."

"So what are we supposed to do?" Noah said, arms crossed.

"Nothing. Just leave me alone."

"Oliver."

"Please." The word came out softer than the rest. He lowered his eyes. "Just leave me alone."

Chris exchanged a glance with Noah. Kai stayed quiet, watching Oliver closely.

"Why are you willing to let us take the blame for something we didn't do?" Chris asked.

Oliver flinched. "I never asked you to take the blame."

"But that's what's happening."

"I know."

"Then why won't you let us help?"

"Because you don't understand what you're asking me to do."

"We're not asking you to reveal your secret."

"You say that now."

"We mean it."

Oliver shook his head. "You don't know how this works." His hands tightened at his sides. "If Danny finds out I'm talking to you about this, he'll..."

He caught himself, but not fast enough.

"See?" Chris said. "You're scared of him. And that's exactly the problem."

Oliver's expression hardened. "You don't get to decide that. You don't get to decide what's best for me just because you think you're helping."

Noah opened his mouth, but Kai got there first. "Wait." His eyes stayed on Oliver. "He's right about one thing. We don't know what he's dealing with." A pause. "But that doesn't mean we should just let this happen."

"I didn't say that," Oliver said. "I said leave me alone."

The room went tense again. Chris rubbed the back of his neck. "Why is everything so difficult?"

"Because it is difficult!" Oliver's voice rose, and the sudden anger in his face caught all three of them off guard, Oliver most of all. He looked down and took a breath.

"You think I want this?"

"No."

"You think I like being scared every time someone mentions it?"

"No."

"You think I want people looking at me like I'm some kind of liar?"

"No."

"Then stop acting like I can just stand up and fix everything!"

His voice cracked at the end. Nobody answered.

Chris looked down, understanding the frustration even without understanding what caused it. Noah shifted his weight. Kai stayed quiet.

Oliver took another breath. "I can't. I can't do what you're asking."

"We aren't asking you to tell everyone."

"You're still asking me to fight back."

Chris hesitated. Oliver only shook his head. "I can't."

The three of them exchanged a glance. Chris wanted to argue, wanted to say none of this was fair, that they shouldn't have to take the blame, that Danny shouldn't get to control Oliver like this, that they could actually fix it if Oliver would just trust them.

But Tyler's words came back instead. You can't force someone to accept help.

Chris exhaled slowly. Noah seemed to be remembering the same thing. Kai glanced at him, and for once, none of them pushed.

"Okay," Chris said finally.

"Okay?"

"We'll stop." Noah glanced at him but didn't argue. "We won't expose your secret ourselves just to clear our names. We won't demand you tell us anything." A pause. "And we're not going to force you to do something you don't want to do."

Oliver looked genuinely thrown. He'd clearly braced for another argument, another attempt to talk him around, maybe even another demand. Instead Chris was backing off. "If you really want us to stay out of it," Chris said, "then we'll respect that."

"We're still not happy about being blamed," Noah said.

"I know."

"And we're definitely not happy about what Danny's doing to you." Oliver said nothing to that. "But that's your decision." Chris held his gaze. "If you ever change your mind..." He hesitated, then let a faint smile through. "You know where to find us."

Chris shrugged. "If you want our help, we'll be there."

"Yeah," Noah said. Kai just nodded.

Oliver looked between the three of them without knowing what to say. He'd expected them to keep pushing, to demand answers, to argue harder. Instead they'd accepted his refusal outright, and somehow that was harder to sit with than the arguing had been.

After a few seconds he lowered his eyes. "Thank you."

Chris gave him a small nod. "Yeah."

The tension finally eased. "We should probably head back," Noah said.

"Yeah."

Kai looked around the room. "I'll lock up."

"You sure?"

"Tyler gave me the key." He headed for the door, Chris and Noah following. Oliver hesitated a moment before joining them.

The four of them left together, Kai staying behind just long enough to lock the door and check the handle before catching up, the key already tucked away to return to Tyler later.

Chris walked beside Oliver, Noah and Kai a few steps behind, none of them particularly interested in talking after what had just happened in the club room.

Still, Chris kept glancing sideways. Oliver looked calmer than before, but there was still something uneasy in the way he walked, like he expected someone to step out and stop them.

After a while, Chris broke the quiet. "You know..."

Oliver looked at him.

"About secrets." Chris scratched the side of his head, and Oliver's expression went guarded fast enough that Chris waved a hand. "Not your secret specifically. I mean... not exactly." Noah chuckled somewhere behind them, and Chris ignored it. "Some secrets don't stay hidden forever."

Oliver listen to it with straight mind.

"Eventually, something brings them to the surface. And when they come out at the moment you least expect..." Chris paused. "The consequences can be much worse than simply facing them yourself."

Kai's eyebrow went up.

"What?"

"Did you really just copy Tyler?"

Chris stopped walking for half a second. "I didn't copy him."

"You said almost exactly what he said."

"I didn't copy him."

"Technically," Noah said, cutting past them, "stealing good advice isn't a crime."

"Thank you."

"I wasn't defending you."

"Why does everyone keep doing this?"

Kai laughed quietly, and even Oliver couldn't quite help a small look between them, the tension from the club room loosening a fraction. Chris caught it and let a faint smile through. "Anyway. That's what I mean."

Oliver looked ahead again. "I know..."

Chris nodded, and neither of them said anything else. For once, he wasn't going to push. Whatever came next was Oliver's decision, and they'd already done everything they could without making it for him.

Tyler didn't go straight back to his seat. After handing the Literature Club key to Kai, he took a different route through his seat, walking along the third row.

Lucas noticed him coming. Tyler walked right past him without so much as a glance. "Lucas."

Lucas straightened. "Yeah?"

"Meet me after school."

Tyler didn't stop moving. "Wait, what..." Lucas started, but he was already gone, closing in on the desks where Danny and Miles sat.

He stopped between them, his back to the rest of the room. Neither of them spoke. Tyler set one hand on Danny's shoulder, the other on Miles's, the gesture almost casual. His voice wasn't.

"I don't care what you do with other people." Danny's body went stiff; Miles didn't move at all. "But don't ever try drag me into your little plays."

His fingers tightened for just a moment before he let go, turned, and walked on past Miles, past Eris without a word, and dropped back into his own seat. He picked up his pen and started writing again, as if none of it had happened.

Danny rubbed the shoulder where Tyler's hand had rested, confusion written all over his face. Across the room, Miles understood exactly what had happened, even if Danny didn't. It wasn't that Danny had decided not to argue. For those few seconds, with Tyler's hand on his shoulder and that cold, controlled voice right next to his ear, he simply hadn't been able to.

Lucas wasn't nearly as perceptive. "Why didn't you say anything?" Danny said nothing. "I'm talking to you." Still nothing. Lucas glanced toward Tyler, then back. "You should've said something."

Danny finally looked at him. Lucas clicked his tongue. "All of you are scared cats."

Miles's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Whatever," Lucas said, more irritated now than embarrassed. "I'll call my brother. He is in high school." He leaned back. "I want to see what Tyler will do then."

Miles said nothing. There was no point encouraging him, and even less point trying to talk him out of it. Lucas was already angry enough to make himself stupider without any help.

A few minutes later the classroom door opened. Chris came in first, Noah and Kai behind him, Oliver quiet at their side. The moment they crossed back to their side of the room, Oliver went straight to his seat and sat down without a word.

Chris and Noah rejoined the group. Tyler was already back at his desk, report in front of him, pen moving steadily. He didn't look up.

"So?" Luna asked as Chris dropped into his seat.

"We did what we could."

"And?"

Chris glanced toward Oliver. "If he doesn't decide for himself what he needs to do..." He paused. "Maybe that's the lesson."

"What lesson?" Noah asked, sitting beside him.

"Trying to be heroes without thinking about the consequences."

Luna nodded, thoughtful. "That's surprisingly mature."

"Don't sound so surprised."

"I wasn't."

"You were."

"I wasn't."

Kai walked over to Tyler's desk and held out the club key. "Here."

Tyler didn't look up. The pen kept moving. Kai waited a beat. Nothing.

"Tyler."

Still nothing. He looked at Eris instead, who'd already noticed the key in his hand. "He's busy."

"He'll need this."

"Give it to me." Kai handed it over, and she closed her fingers around it. "I'll give it back to him."

"Thanks." He went back to his seat.

Tyler kept writing. No questions, no lecture, no mention of what had happened. Chris watched him for a moment, then looked over at Oliver, sitting quietly at his desk.

The decision wasn't in their hands anymore. They'd tried to help, they'd offered, and they'd backed off the moment Oliver refused. Whatever came next depended entirely on him now.

Chris leaned back in his chair, and for once didn't feel the need to chase down another answer. Neither did Noah. Kai settled in quietly beside them.

Across the room, Oliver sat with his eyes on his untouched lunch. And for the first time all day, nobody was telling him what he should do.
