SHUFFLE OF FATE: A Deckbuilding LitRPG
CHAPTER 6: THE SAFE ZONE
The tunnel beyond the subterranean lake felt different. The air was still, heavy, and unnervingly quiet. There were no skittering rats, no dripping water, and no roaring monsters.
Kai walked cautiously, his wet boots squelching softly against the stone floor. The path ended abruptly at a heavy, reinforced iron door set into the rock face.
Glowing blue runes were etched into the metal surface. Even without a [Lore] skill, Kai recognized the universal symbol of the System.
"A Sanctuary," Kai breathed, his shoulders sagging with relief.
He pushed the heavy door. It swung open silently on well-oiled hinges.
Inside, the room was small, square, and illuminated by a soft, ambient white light that seemed to come from the walls themselves. In the center of the room stood a small stone basin filled with crystal-clear water.
Kai stumbled toward it. He cupped his hands and drank greedily. The water was ice-cold and tasted like pure energy.

A wave of warmth washed over him. The pain in his chest vanished. The exhaustion that had been clinging to his bones melted away. For the first time since the mine collapsed, Kai felt human again.
He sat back against the smooth wall, letting out a long sigh. "If only the mines had one of these."
But he wasn't alone in the room.
In the corner, sitting slumped against the wall, was a corpse.
Unlike the skeleton he found earlier, this one was relatively fresh. The body was dried out, mummified by the dry air of the sanctuary. He wore leather armor that had been dissolved in patches, as if burned by strong acid.
Kai approached the body respectfully. There were no cards—they had likely dissipated upon death—but there was a small, leather-bound book in the man's lap.
Kai picked it up. A journal.
He opened to the first page. The handwriting was neat, but it grew more erratic toward the end.
*Day 1: My name is Silas. I've finally saved enough to buy a Common Deck. I'm entering the Caverns to farm for a Rare drop. I need it. The Guild Tax is due next month, and if I don't pay, they'll take my sister.*
Kai flipped a few pages.
*Day 3: The Goblins are easy. The Rats are annoying. But I found a path leading down. The loot should be better there.*
Kai frowned. The hierarchy of Aethelgard was brutal. You either paid the Guilds, or you became a slave in the mines. Silas was just another desperate soul trying to buy his freedom.
He flipped to the final entry. The ink was smeared, written with a shaking hand.
*Day ??: I made a mistake. I went too deep. I found the Nest.
The Weaver... The Broodmother... she's too fast. I blinded her, but she sensed my movement on the webs. Her poison is in my leg. I managed to crawl back to the Sanctuary, but I don't have an Antidote card.
The door is locked from the inside. I'm safe, but I'm dying.
If you find this... turn back. Don't touch the webs. She feels everything.*
Kai closed the book.
"Turn back," Kai whispered. "I wish I could, Silas."
But the way back was blocked by a rockslide. The only way out was through this 'Broodmother'.
Kai looked at the mummified corpse one last time. "I'll try not to make the same mistake."
He stood up and began his preparations. He took out his **[Rusted Dagger]** card. He summoned the physical weapon. The blade was chipped from hitting the Turtle's shell, and the edge was dull.
Kai found a flat stone near the basin. He spent the next hour working in silence.
*Scrape. Scrape. Scrape.*
He couldn't repair the card's durability fully without a Blacksmith, but he could maintain it. He sharpened the edge until it gleamed dangerously in the sanctuary light.

"Good enough," Kai muttered.
He checked his deck one last time.
1. **[Rusted Dagger]** (Sharpened)
2. **[Scavenger Rat]** (Ready)
3. **[Flashbang]** (Ready)
4. **[The Wildcard]** (Ready)
He had full Health. Full Mana. And a warning.
*She feels everything on the webs.*
Kai absorbed the information. Stealth wouldn't work if he stepped on the webs. Blindness wouldn't work if she could sense tremors.
"I need to be lighter than air," Kai mused, "or heavier than a rock."
He stood up and walked to the iron door on the far side of the room—the exit leading deeper into the dungeon.
He pushed it open.
The smell hit him instantly. It wasn't the smell of rot anymore. It was a chemical smell, acrid and sour.
The tunnel ahead was no longer made of stone. Floor to ceiling, every inch was covered in thick, white, sticky silk. Bones of goblins and larger beasts hung suspended in the cocoon-like corridor, wrapped tight like grotesque decorations.
Somewhere deep in the darkness, something clicked.
*Click-clack.*
Kai tightened his grip on the dagger. He stepped out of the safe zone and into the spider's parlor.
"Alright, Mother," Kai whispered into the dark. "Let's dance."
