Chapter 45 - Chapter 2: The Silent Tower

The expedition entered the Beacon carefully. Inside, the tower was vast and cold, with walls covered in the same symbols Ren had seen on the map. Yuki ran her hands over the carvings, translating as she went.

"It speaks of 'the Harmony of Cold and Light,'" she said. "The Beacon was meant to balance the extreme energies of the north—using cold to ground wild magic, and light to prevent the cold from becoming stagnant. But the text here… it looks like it was scratched out deliberately."

Ren climbed the tower's spiral stairs, following the flow of magic. At the top, in what had once been the Beacon's chamber, he found the source—a massive crystal, similar to the one in the Eastern Wastes, but covered in a thick layer of black ice that seemed to absorb all light.

As he approached, the ice began to crack, and a voice echoed through the chamber—cold as the northern winds, sharp as broken ice.

"Leave this place," it commanded. "Balance is a lie. Only strength matters—strength to freeze what should not move, to shatter what should not stand."

A figure emerged from behind the crystal—tall and pale, with skin like polished ice and eyes that burned with blue fire. They wore the robes of the Beacon's ancient guardians, but twisted by darkness.

"I am Vorak," the figure said. "Last of the True Guardians. I silenced the Beacon because it had forgotten its purpose. The north must be cold, must be still—only then can it be strong."

Yuki stepped forward, her voice steady. "Strength isn't about being still, or about freezing everything in place. Strength is about adapting, about working with what you have to build something better."

Vorak laughed—a sound like ice cracking. "You speak of balance as if it's something gentle," he said. "But balance requires sacrifice. The Beacon was making us weak—letting warmth and chaos seep into our lands."

He raised his hands, and ice spikes erupted from the floor. The Frostborn warriors with the expedition drew their weapons, but Yuki held up her hand to stop them.

"Fighting will only make more ice," she said. "He's using conflict to fuel his power."
