Chapter 51 52.53. Why not just make Dong'er belong only to me

"Dong'er begs Teacher to grant Xiao Gang access to the Spirit Hall's core literature," Bibi Dong pleaded.

Qian Xunji looked at Bibi Dong gently and said, "Give me a reasonable reason that moves me, and I will agree."

"Mm." Bibi Dong's face brightened. "Xiao Gang has already joined the Spirit Hall. He's one of ours. If our Spirit Hall can help him resolve his martial soul's malignant mutation and evolve his martial soul into a Golden Saint Dragon, we'll gain another Title Douluo for the Hall. Second, Xiao Gang's martial soul malignant mutation is known among the upper echelons of the Soul Master world. The Blue Electric Tyrannosaurus Sect failed to solve it. If the Spirit Hall solves it, our prestige will soar."

Qian Xunji looked at Bibi Dong indulgently. "Good, well said. Then it will be as Dong'er wishes — grant that Yu Xiaogang access to the Spirit Hall's core library."

"Dong'er thanks Teacher." Bibi Dong hurriedly expressed her gratitude and left to tell Yu Xiaogang the good news.

When Yu Xiaogang received the news, he was stunned.

No way — Qian Xunji agreed so easily?

Then joy flooded Yu Xiaogang's heart. This showed how highly Bibi Dong stood in Qian Xunji's esteem. In the future, as long as he kept Bibi Dong on his side, he could use her to extract more benefits from Qian Xunji, the Pope, for himself.

Yu Xiaogang doubled down on wooing Bibi Dong, and entering the Spirit Hall's core library felt like entering empty territory.

Because of Bibi Dong's status as the Holy Maiden, others in the Spirit Hall treated her with awe and distance. Under Yu Xiaogang's PUA tactics, Bibi Dong believed they distanced themselves because they despised her ugly possessed martial soul. Only Yu Xiaogang did not mind the ugly appearance her martial soul took after possession and was willing to be her friend.

Thus a strange scene appeared in the Spirit Hall: around Bibi Dong, the favored daughter of heaven, there was only one Level 29 Great Soul Master who could speak to her.

Half a year later

Yu Xiaogang cursed under his breath and set down the last book from the Spirit Hall's core library.

"So this is the Spirit Hall with its ten-thousand-year heritage, such depth of foundation — after searching for so many years, they still can't find a way to help me solve my martial soul's malignant mutation. Do you have the face to call yourselves the sacred land of Soul Masters?" Yu Xiaogang was thoroughly disappointed.

Depression overwhelmed him. His thin body felt hollow, as if the bones had been drained, and he collapsed weakly to the floor.

I betrayed the Blue Electric Tyrannosaurus Sect to join the Spirit Hall, got kicked out by my clan for it, and this is what I get.

They don't even have a solution for my martial soul's malignant mutation. Where am I supposed to find a way now? Am I doomed to be a useless nobody who can't even reach Level 30 for the rest of my life? No — never. I, Yu Xiaogang, will never be a trash. There must be a way for me to break through Level 30. Wait—

A sudden flash of inspiration hit Yu Xiaogang. He thought of Bibi Dong.

In the past, Yu Yuanzhen had given Yu Xiaogang training and transmission of skill only up to Level 29, claiming his talent had hit its ceiling and couldn't progress further.

But Yu Xiaogang didn't believe it. Obviously his father Yu Yuanzhen was stingy with soul power and unwilling to help him train; he'd just made up an excuse.

So if Yu Xiaogang could find someone willing to transmit skills and training to him, with their help he could easily break through Level 30. Then, with a suitable soul ring, he could activate Luo Sanpao's bloodline and evolve into a Golden Saint Dragon.

And isn't Bibi Dong the perfect candidate? She has twin divine martial souls, innate full soul power, and talent far exceeding his father's. She will surely become a Title Douluo in the future.

All he'd need to do is give her key guidance while she trains, help her achieve Title Douluo, and then have her repay him. With the nourishment of Bibi Dong's talent and massive soul power, he could break through Soul Venerable, Soul Sect, Soul King — even becoming a Title Douluo himself would be within reach.

The more he thought, the more viable it seemed, and the more excited he got—

But Bibi Dong is the Holy Maiden of the Pope's Hall. Once she becomes a Title Douluo, how could the Spirit Hall possibly allow her to secretly transmit training to him?

This question doused the flames of Yu Xiaogang's excitement like a bucket of cold water.

Calming down, Yu Xiaogang sat and pondered. A spark of cunning flashed in his eyes.

If that's the case, why not make Dong'er belong only to me, Yu Xiaogang?

Qian Xunji indulged Bibi Dong in everything but hadn't given her the necessary education; Bibi Dong was as innocent as a blank sheet of paper — perfect for painting a color that belongs only to me!

I can capture Bibi Dong first and establish a relationship. Then when Dong'er's training reaches a certain level, I'll instigate her to run away from the Spirit Hall. We can hide in an isolated place and train quietly. When our cultivation is complete, we return, and even if the Spirit Hall resents us, with my Golden Saint Dragon martial soul as a Title Douluo and Dong'er as a peerless twin-soul powerhouse, the Spirit Hall would have to swallow their objections.

While Yu Xiaogang's mind raced with plans to shed the label of uselessness, Bibi Dong entered.

"Xiao Gang, you still haven't found a way?"

Yu Xiaogang instantly put on an exhausted face, sighed dramatically, and said, "Ah, Dong'er, it seems I'm destined to never break Level 30 in my lifetime."

He lowered his head, clenched his eyes tight as if refusing to bow to fate, then let his hands go weakly.

A vivid image of a young man fighting destiny formed in Bibi Dong's eyes, and she felt a pang of pity for her only true friend. She felt she should comfort him properly.

"Xiao Gang, to train from an innate 0.5-level soul power to what you have now shows great perseverance. Perhaps the Spirit Hall has no way to fix your martial soul mutation, but proving your life's value doesn't necessarily require becoming a great fighter. You could pursue soul theory. If you make achievements in soul-theory, you could become a Soul Theory Master and thereby prove your life's worth, couldn't you?"

A theory master? Why would I want to become a theory master instead of an unrivaled powerhouse! At first Yu Xiaogang scoffed at Bibi Dong's suggestion, but then he reconsidered — it didn't conflict with his plan.

Before manipulating Bibi Dong into defecting with him, he could use the Spirit Hall's resources and connections to secure a crown as a Soul Theory Master for himself. Then, once he rose to fame, posterity would sing his praises and remember his great feats.

Bibi Dong led Yu Xiaogang to a quiet building in Spirit City, beneath the Pope's Hall — a tranquil place.

Yu Xiaogang looked around, puzzled. "What is this place?"

Bibi Dong explained, "This is the Soul Theory Research Association, a sacred place in the world of soul theory. Each year, soul theory masters from across the continent gather here, and the Association selects one important soul theory paper to publish. Having a paper published here grants the author the title 'Master' and widespread reverence."

"So that means," Yu Xiaogang said confidently, "if my paper is published here, won't everyone have to call me Master Xiaogang?"

Bibi Dong nodded. "However, the Association's publication standards are very strict. Passing all the screenings and getting published is not easy."

Yu Xiaogang clasped his hands behind his back; a gleam of cleverness shone in his eyes. "What's so difficult? Publishing a paper in this Association is a piece of cake for me."

At that moment, Bibi Dong saw an aura of confidence radiating from Yu Xiaogang. Despite his many flaws, this confidence set him apart.

Although he was full of shortcomings, Yu Xiaogang did have a strength: an exceptional memory.

Others forget books they've read after a while, but Yu Xiaogang could recall exactly which page and which paragraph contained specific content.

That was one advantage for becoming a Soul Theory Master. But another shortcoming was glaring.

His mind wasn't flexible; he copied rigidly and couldn't innovate. The brain under his close-cropped hair only lit up when devising things that benefitted him.

At first he thought becoming a Soul Theory Master would be effortless, but once he began, he found it hard.

Many nights he paced in his small room, clawing at his crew-cut, grimacing. "This problem is so hard."

Suddenly, he had a flash of insight.

Some common knowledge Yu Xiaogang knew had never been published as a paper.

According to the Association's rules, published content would be credited to the author. In other words, if he published these things, those ideas would be attributed to him.

From then on, no one could avoid those common theoretical points, and everyone would have to rely on Yu Xiaogang. In ten thousand years, people would chant his name for discovering these truths.

Ha ha ha—

The more he thought about it, the more feasible it seemed, and he acted.

"First principle: Innate soul power is proportional to the strength of the martial soul."

"Second: Martial souls are divided into beast martial souls and artifact martial souls; there are no other categories."

"Third: Artifact martial souls predominantly favor support functions; beast martial souls predominantly favor offense."

And so on.

Before long, Yu Xiaogang had drafted the first version of his paper. But after reviewing it for days, he still wasn't satisfied.

Why—

Although his draft contained his deep wisdom, it was undeniable that the ideas were inspired by others.

Thinking this, Yu Xiaogang added two of his own original points to the draft: One, there's no such thing as a worthless martial soul, only worthless Soul Masters. Two, plant-type martial souls can also absorb soul rings from animal-type soul beasts.

The first was Yu Xiaogang's lifelong maxim; he hoped future readers would be motivated by his aphorism. The second arose after he surveyed the Spirit Hall's library collections and noticed most plant-type soul masters preferred plant-type soul beasts when gaining soul rings.

Why must they choose plant-type? Why can't animal-type rings be absorbed? Yu Xiaogang included this provocative idea as part of his theory.

By dawn, after a whole night without sleep, Yu Xiaogang finalized his theory.

He picked up the draft, stood by the window, bathed in the morning sun and said contentedly, "Within two weeks of deciding to pursue becoming a theory master, I've produced a substantial soul theory work. I really am a genius."

He shook his draft and said, "I'll call it The Ten Core Competencies of Martial Souls. Once published, the awakening of martial souls, the ways soul rings are attached — everything will trace back to my theory."

A knock came at the door.

"Come in." Yu Xiaogang tucked his precious work away.

The door opened. Bibi Dong entered carrying a steaming breakfast and set it on his table. "How's the theory research going? Any progress?"

"Progress?" Yu Xiaogang's mouth twitched. "Dong'er, you underestimate me."

He folded his arms and said confidently, "I already have a first draft. Once published, it will make my name known across the world."

Bibi Dong was surprised. "So soon? Can I see it?"

Yu Xiaogang was reluctant.

"What's the matter?" Bibi Dong rolled her eyes. "Are you worried I'll steal your ideas and publish them?"

He was indeed worried. He feared Bibi Dong would get ideas she shouldn't have, steal his results, and publish first.

"I'm not going to go into soul theory; I want to be a powerful battle Soul Master like Teacher and the others," Bibi Dong said, displeased, and turned to leave.

"Wait, Dong'er, I didn't mean that." Bibi Dong's words reminded Yu Xiaogang: his earth-shaking theory still needed Bibi Dong's connections to get published.

So he showed Bibi Dong his treasured draft.

Bibi Dong took the draft. The title on the first page read: The Ten Core Competencies of Martial Souls.

As she read on, she was astonished.

Twin divine martial soul conjecture, soul ring configuration and derivation of the spirit-power and bodily-quality formula, construction of martial soul mimicry theory, core points of martial soul evolution, bloodline and martial soul...

Bibi Dong looked at Yu Xiaogang in shock. She murmured, "You summarized all this in just half a month?"

"Of course." Yu Xiaogang could see her astonishment and felt even more pleased with himself.

"I didn't misjudge you; you really are a genius," Bibi Dong said excitedly.

"A few theories, nothing to brag about," Yu Xiaogang replied with even greater pride.
