Chapter 19 - Magical Hide And Seek

Jacqueline stepped beside him. "Let's open the box and look at what is inside."

"Okay," Soren nodded.

He slowly unwrapped the blue cloth and opened the small wooden box.

Inside were two items, a folded letter and a locket made from something that looked like polished green scales.

Soren lifted the locket first.

It was shaped like a curled dragon, tiny, elegant, and carved with incredible detail. Its wings wrapped around a small gemstone in the center.

The scales shimmered faintly, as if they were alive under the moonlight. The eyes were carved in a way that made them look like they were watching him.

The locket felt warm in his hand.

Cassie whispered, "It looks… ancient."

Penny and Jacqueline nodded.

Soren placed it around his neck. The warmth spread instantly across his chest, almost like the locket recognized him.

Then he opened the letter.

"Since you are reading this, it means you have solved the Dragon Puzzle.

The locket you found is something that will keep you safe. It is also a key. A key to the gifts I prepared for you.

You are standing in a place called Caer Bryn Ruins. This is where I first met the strongest creature I have ever seen. And this was the place I wanted to bring you someday.

Your next puzzle is a magical hide-and-seek. Remember how we used to play? Whenever you wanted to find me… I hid in front of you, but you never saw me.

You only found me when you understood the secret. Use the same logic now. Find what is hidden in front of you, and it will guide you to the next location.

Take care.

Your sister,

Elara Whitlock."

Soren lowered the letter slowly.

Jacqueline asked, "A magical hide-and-seek puzzle?"

Cassie looked around the ruined courtyard. "So something is here… but invisible."

Penny tightened her grip on her wand. "Then we need to figure out how to reveal it."

Soren touched the warm locket at his chest.

"Let's find what Elara hid for us."

They stood in the center of the Caer Bryn Ruins.

Tall broken pillars surrounded them. Cold night air brushed past the cracked stone floor.

Everything looked empty.

Too empty.

Jacqueline looked around carefully. "Elara said something is here. Hidden in front of us."

Cassie murmured, "So… invisible? Or disguised?"

Penny lifted her wand. "Maybe a Revealing Charm?"

But Soren shook his head.

"No. Elara didn't write about magic. She wrote about our game."

Jacqueline smiled faintly. "Hide-and-seek."

Penny frowned. "But normal hide-and-seek won't help here."

Soren touched the locket at his neck. It felt warm again.

"When I was younger," he said, "Elara never hid behind anything. She always hid in the open."

Cassie blinked. "In the open? But how?"

Soren nodded. "She stood still. Very still. And I only found her when I changed the angle I was looking from."

Penny snapped her fingers. "Perspective."

Jacqueline pointed at one of the broken columns.

"So we should look at everything… from different angles."

Soren walked toward the largest ruin.

"Let's try."

They spread out, circling around a tall cracked stone arch.

At first it looked like nothing but a broken structure.

But when Soren walked to the side, and shifted slightly.

The shadows on the arch changed shape.

He froze.

"Everyone… come here."

They gathered beside him and looked from the same angle.

The natural cracks and shadows on the stone aligned perfectly, forming a picture.

A symbol.

A dragon curled around a torch.

Penny gasped. "It was here the whole time… but only visible from one angle."

Jacqueline whispered, "Magical hide-and-seek."

Cassie stepped closer. "But what do we do with it?"

Soren reached out and touched the carved torch in the stone. At the moment his fingers brushed it, the locket on his chest glowed bright green.

The stone trembled.

The carved dragon symbol lit up, and the torch design burst into flame.

Not real fire, but magical green fire. And inside the flame, something appeared.

It floated out slowly.

A small metal compass, but unlike any normal one. Its needle wasn't pointing north, it spun once… then locked onto one direction.

Straight toward a narrow path behind the ruins. Penny held her breath. "A magical compass."

Cassie nodded. "So this is the guide to the next location."

Jacqueline smiled. "Elara really planned everything for you."

Soren closed his hand around the compass.

"The path is this way," he said firmly.

But before they could move, a cold wind blew across the ruins.

Penny shivered. "Did anyone feel that?"

Cassie tightened her wand grip. "Something's watching us."

Jacqueline nodded slowly. "I thought so too."

Soren looked at the map, the locket, and the compass.

"Whatever is watching," he said quietly, "will have to keep up."

And the four of them stepped toward the path, guided by the compass… toward the next puzzle Elara left behind.

They walked quietly through the ruins. The wind grew stronger, and the air colder.

Cassie rubbed her arms. "This place feels… wrong."

Penny nodded. "Not dangerous. Just like something is watching."

Jacqueline glanced behind them.

"I feel it too. Since the mirror puzzle."

Soren didn't slow down, but he tightened his grip on the compass.

"Just stay close," he said. "We don't know what else Elara dealt with here."

---

Here is the rewritten version of the "mysterious follower" scene —

now it is a young Welsh Dragon, but described only through clues, without naming it, keeping the mystery exactly as you wanted:

---

Unseen by them, behind a broken pillar, something small crouched low.

Not a shadow, but a creature.

Its body was slender, no taller than Soren's knee. Its scales shimmered faintly in the moonlight, shifting between green and silver like rippling water.

Two glowing blue eyes watched quietly from the darkness. When Soren and the girls turned a corner, the creature slithered after them, moving with surprising silence for something that looked reptilian.

Its small claws left no footprints on the stone.

Its wings, folded tightly against its sides, gave off a faint rustling sound.

A thin trail of warm air escaped its nostrils, like the smallest breath of smoke. It didn't growl. It didn't roar. It simply watched them.

Curious. And waiting.

---

The compass needle stopped suddenly.

They stood before an ancient stone courtyard surrounded by four tall statues.

The statues were shaped like mythical creatures, gryphon, basilisk, dragon, and wolf, but all carved crudely, as if very old.

And in the very center of the courtyard was a massive stone chessboard.

Each square was large enough for a person to stand on.

The chess pieces were carved of dark stone on one side, and white marble on the other.

Jacqueline stared. "Is this…?"

Penny nodded. "Wizard Chess."

Cassie sighed. "Of course. Elara loved chess."

Soren stepped forward. "This is the puzzle."

As soon as his foot touched the board, all the chess pieces shook and turned to face him.

A deep voice echoed across the courtyard, "Only the one who bears the scale may play."

Soren touched the green-scaled locket around his neck.

"This is meant for me."

The pieces aligned themselves into starting positions. But the board was strange.

On the opposite side, the enemy pieces weren't normal chess shapes.

The pawns looked like armored goblins.

The knights were roaring stone beasts.

The rooks were crumbling towers with glowing cracks.

The queen was a tall hooded figure holding a blade.

The king was a faceless giant.

Cassie whispered, "This is not normal wizard chess…"

Penny added, "If we lose, I don't know what happens."

Jacqueline looked at Soren. "You can beat it. You always beat Elara… eventually."

Soren nodded and stepped onto the white side.

"Let's begin."

The voice echoed again: "Win, and the path opens. Lose, and remain trapped."

Soren took a deep breath.

The pieces awaited his command.

He called clearly, "Pawn to E4."

The stone pawn marched forward with heavy steps.

Immediately, the enemy pawn charged forward aggressively, smashing Soren's pawn to rubble.

Cassie jumped. "They're more violent than normal!"

Soren nodded. "This board attacks hard. I need to think."

He scanned the board.

Then he smirked.

"This is Elara's style. Aggressive. Overconfident. But predictable."

He made his move.

"Knight to F3."

His knight leapt forward gracefully.

The enemy responded instantly, a beast-knight jumped two squares, roaring with stone fangs.

Soren watched carefully. He understood now.

The enemy side was strong, but reckless.

It sacrificed pieces too easily, pushing forward without strategy.

Just like when Elara used to rush her attacks in their games.

Soren smiled slightly, "I can beat this."

He moved piece after piece, dodging the wild attacks, luring the enemy into traps.

Finally, the enemy queen lunged forward, swinging a stone blade.

But Soren had prepared for that.

"Bishop to H6. Checkmate."

His bishop slid into place.

All enemy pieces froze.

Then they shattered into harmless dust.

The chessboard glowed bright white.

Penny gasped. "You did it!"

Cassie grinned. "I knew you would."

Jacqueline smiled proudly.

Soren stepped off the board as the voice spoke again, "Well played, bearer of the scale.

Your path continues."

The far wall of the courtyard slowly cracked open, revealing a hidden passage filled with soft blue light.

But behind them, the creature watching from earlier crept forward silently and it entered before them with a smile…
