Chapter 1 - 1

Jaune pushed some bushes aside and allowed Pyrrha to step through them. He quickly followed and the two came upon a ruined temple at the end of a plain pressed into the backside of a cliff.

The ruin itself was circular in nature. With an open entrance and with only moss-covered columns signaling what this place once had been.

Jaune wondered what the place could have been. How old these ruins were? What type of people inhabited them so long ago?

But those answers were lost to time, and it wasn't his mission to find them.

"Well, it looks like we found the temple." Jaune pointed out.

Pyrrha nodded. "Yes, it seems we have."

Both gave the other a resolute look and slid down the small cliff they were on. Dirt and dust kicked up as they came to a full stop.

The plain was peaceful and a soft breeze was blowing. Yet the temple itself felt slightly ominous as he approached.

Something about it just felt off. Like there was an ancient power here he couldn't see but feel.

'Probably just nerves.' He thought.

When the two entered the temple Jaune's eyes widened in recognition seeing Blake and Yang holding two chess pieces. Both being the knight.

"Oh, hey guy!" Yang greeted. "How was your trip here?"

Blake gave the two an affirming nod noting she acknowledged the two.

"It was alright. Mainly just a bunch of walking until we ran into a few Grimm." Jaune explained.

"What type?" Blake asked.

"A couple of King Taijitu and a few Death Stalkers," Pyrrha answered.

Yang let out a whistle. "Dang, quite the Grimm to run into on your first encounter."

Pyrrha smiled before looking at Jaune. "Well, they were easier than I thought they would be. All thanks to Jaune's quick thinking of course."

Yang and Blake looked at the boy who shrugged and gestured to Pyrrha. "I can't take all the credit. It if wasn't for Pyrrha's excellent shooting that fight could have dragged on longer."

"But you also baited them into attacking each other as well."

"Only because you killed the King Taijitu so quickly."

Yang and Blake side-eyed each other as the mutual respect Jaune and Pyrrha had grown for each came pouring out once more.

"Are they-

Blake shook her head. "I don't think so."

The four's attention was drawn by a loud thumping and then a crash causing all of them to ready their weapons as a Beowulf crashed through the trees.

Dead.

"What the-

The energetic red-haired girl popped out from behind the Grimm with a massive sledgehammer in her hand. Looking down and frowning at her dead steed.

"Aw, it died." She groaned.

"Did she-

"Just ride that Grimm here?" Blake finished Yang's question.

Jaune and Pyrrha both stared in mixtures of shock and astonishment. Jaune was more astonished while Pyrrha was more shocked.

Behind the cheery girl appeared the tall boy with black hair. Upon closer inspection, Jaune noticed a small highlight of pink in his hair.

"Nora." The boy groaned. "Please never do that again."

"Ren, look!" She ignored him. "We made it!"

Faster than Jaune's eyes could comprehend Nora had shot forward and arrived at where the other chess pieces were sitting on a pedestal.

Some were already missing. Having been taken beforehand by another team along with Blake and Yang's pieces.

Nora wasted no time grabbing a queen piece and started singing. "I'm queen of the castle, I'm queen of the castle."

Ren let out an exasperated sigh before shaking his head and following his partner. Grabbing a queen piece as well and letting Nora tap hers against his.

Jaune felt a lightbulb go off above his head as he turned to Pyrrha. "Grab a queen piece."

Pyrrha seeing the mirth in his eyes along with an idea had no choice but to accept. Jaune was planning something and she would know soon.

However, before they could grab their desired pieces the group heard screaming from above.

They all dared to look up and their eyes widened in absolute shock and horror seeing Ruby and Weiss hanging onto the leg of a Nevermore.

A giant black bird-like Grimm with the appearance of a mix between condors and ravens along with other birds.

It was high in the sky. Like really high. So high that a fall could prove fatal to both Ruby and Weiss even with aura.

"Ruby!" Yang cried out. Worry and fear filling her chest. Her heart thumping in her chest as she felt hopeless.

"What do we do?!" Blake asked.

"Oh, that is not good!" Nora added.

Ren remained silent but agreed with Nora. The Nevermore was hovering over the plains. No trees around either Ruby or Weiss to slow their descent as they fell.

"Any ideas Jaune?" Pyrrha asked him.

Jaune nodded and sighed. He was going to have to use his magic to get up there.

Nope, scratch that both were already falling.

Jaune didn't even need to think as he ran forward. Conjuring pillars of earth for him to run across and then jump up to a higher one.

He did this again and again. Getting higher and higher into the sky with each jump. The group on the ground could do nothing but watch in astonishment and then cheer as Jaune grabbed Ruby's arm and threw her onto the platform.

Yang felt a rush of relief wash over her body and her shoulders sagged in relief seeing her sister safe and sound.

But Jaune was not done yet.

Weiss was still falling and had fallen past him. Her scream filled the air as Jaune launched himself off the man-made ledge that began to lower Ruby.

He used wind magic to propel himself forward and grab Weiss. The screaming girl was shocked someone had saved her.

Jaune wasted no time sticking his other hand out and shooting a massive gust of wind to slow their descent.

Allowing Weiss's brain to catch up to her and summon a white glyph for the two to stand on.

Then the glyph disappeared and the two dropped safely to the ground. With Ruby landing right by their side. Her eyes wide with amazement and seemingly uncaring of her near-death experience.

"Jaune!" She cheered. "Your semblance is so cool! Do more party tricks!"

Jaune waved his arm and a wall of earth shielded the three from the Nevermore's feather which had been shot at them.

"Ruby." He calmly said dispelling the magic. "Maybe when we're out of the forest and safe."

"Oh right." The girl added.

Weiss said nothing but her eyes were swimming with questions.

She had no time to ask them of course. The Nevermore was still stalking above them waiting for another opportunity to attack.

The three ran back to the temple. Nora and Ren had differing reactions. Nora was wide-eyed and practically bouncing up and down. While Ren remained passive, or as passive as one could seeing something akin to literal magic.

Jaune couldn't help but wonder how he'd react knowing it was actual magic.

Yang and Blake were much the same as Ren and Nora. Although Yang's shock was replaced with relief as she embraced her sister in the toughest hug Jaune had ever seen.

Leaving only Pyrrha to stare at Jaune. Her face showed only confusion and…was that concern?

Pushing the thought aside Jaune and Pyrrha quickly grabbed their 'relic' followed by Weiss and Ruby doing the same.

The Nevermore flew overhead cawing as it reared its wings back and fired more sharp feathers at the group.

Jaune was quick to react and conjured another barrier shielding the entire group as the sharp feathers pelted harmlessly against the earth.

Another cawing sound rang out as a second Nevermore appeared behind them. Jaune grunted and raised another wall of earth boxing the two in and shielding them from the second onslaught of feathers.

A cascade of roars sounded from behind them and Jaune craned his head ever so slightly to see a horde of Ursa Majors behind them.

Big black bears with bone plating and bone spikes on their bodies.

Jaune allowed a nervous sweat to run down his forehead. "Hoo that is not good."

"What do we do?" Yang asked. "Because that is a big ass horde!"

"My god there has to be over a hundred!" Weiss added.

Ren pulled out his twin machine pistols with blades hanging in front of the grips. While Nora turned her sledgehammer into a grenade launcher.

Jaune began to run countless scenarios in his head. Many of them resulting in the death of everyone or only some.

But those scenarios were unacceptable. He wasn't going to let anyone die. Not on his watch. They would all make it out of her.

He stomped his foot in the ground and a wave of fire formed in front of the Ursa Majors. Jaune had to be really careful with fire lest he burn the forest down.

He took a look at everyone's weapons and formed a plan inside his head. Ruby and Pyrrha both had snipers. Yang and Nora were close combat fighters while Weiss and Blake could swap between medium and short range combat.

Pyrrha could also swap between short, mid, and long range. Which was good for what he had planned.

"We clear a path!" Jaune's voice called out.

Another wave of sharp feathers pelted along his barricade but it still held. The fire in front of the horde began to die down ever so slightly leaving time for a plan to shorten.

"Clear a path for Ruby and Pyrrha! Get them to a tree and allow them to rain sniper fire down on the horde!"

Another wave of fathers caused his barrier to crack ever so slightly.

"Once they take a position they can draw some away! At that point, Nora and Yang clear a path for the others! Once you break through, stick to the trees and head east! Then once you lose them head south and back to the cliff!"

"That doesn't deal with the Nevermore's!" Weiss pointed out.

The fire died down and allowed the Ursa Majors at the forest edge to finally make their move.

Jaune dropped the barrier and ran back into the plain. "I'll distract them!" Jaune declared.

No one had a chance to protest as Ren and Nora immediately opened fire on the Ursa Majors.

Gunshots and explosions filled the air drawing their attention. Yang sighed before running off to the side.

Clapping her hands and screaming her lungs out to get their attention. Weiss and Blake followed with Blake firing her gun and Weiss summoning glyphs that shot out icicles.

The Ursa Major's jerked their heads to the sides and most focused on the three girls. Ren and Nora then began to run to the side as well.

Still dropping the same amount of suppressing fire as before.

That turned even more of their attention as the Grimm started bounding toward them. Leaving just an opening big enough for Ruby and Pyrrha to break through.

The two bolted into the forest and quickly helped themselves up into trees. Ruby had a much easier time thanks to her semblance.

Once the two had taken position they began firing into the rear of the charging Grimm.

It worked in getting their attention. Causing confusion to spread amongst their ranks as they were now taking fire from both sides.

This is when Yang seized the opportunity presented to her. She activated her semblance and charged forward with her shotgun gauntlets.

She roared as her fist met an Ursa Major's head causing the beast to roar and step back.

Nora was right behind her. Her sledgehammer raised above her head as she slammed down on the Ursa Major behind the first.

Weiss and Blake moved it for support. Clearing a small opening for Ren to dash through. Though this wasn't part of the plan Ren scaled a tree and immediately began firing down as well.

An extra hail of bullets didn't help the Grimm's case at all. While only three of them had died so far. It was still an annoyance for them to get peppered by all these bullets.

Yang let out a roar of rage as a single lock of her blonde hair fell to the ground. Ruby winced before returning fire. Leaving a confused Pyrrha and Ren.

Only for a loud impact to startle them and an Ursa Major to be sent flying into a tree.

"Focus your fire on the middle of the group!"

Ruby yelled. "Help Yang clear a path and watch your fire! Lead your shots!"

The beast died soon after and Yang went on a rampage. Single-handedly clearing a path for the rest of the group while being supported by with ranged capabilities.

The group quickly scaled up the trees with the help from the others. Leaving the Ursa Major's to try and climb them.

Only to be met with gunfire and grenades in return.

"Jaune!" Pyrrha yelled, grabbing his attention. "We made it through!"

Though he didn't look at her. Too busy dodging the diving Nevermore's attacks. She did see a small curt nod signaling he had heard her.

.

.

.

.

Jaune kept his breathing under control as he batted away the Nevermore's beak. The second one dove at him from behind. Talons raised and readied to pierce.

'Behind you!'

But Sylvie's warning saved him from taking them hit as he dived out of the way. Shooting up to his feet and sending wind scythes with his sword at the giant bird.

It had the desired effect of hurting it judging by the shriek it let out.

However, it also served to piss the creature off as it took another dive at him. Jaune rolled and was met with a barrage of more feathers.

He raised his shield as he slammed into the ground. Blocking the feathers to the best of his ability until they stopped.

'How many damn feathers do these things have?!'

Jaune looked down and saw that his aura had absorbed all of the damage. Not a single feather was stuck to him.

He counted himself lucky for having such a big pool of aura.

Quickly getting back to his feet Jaune raised his shield as the Nevermore's kept circling him.

Like two Ospreys circling a corpse.

"Jaune!" Pyrrha yelled. "We made it through!"

Not taking his eyes off the Nevermore's Jaune sent a curt nod her way.

The two creatures circled above him before both diving at the same time. Jaune smirked and twisted his foot slightly causing dozens of earthen spikes to shoot up.

Both Nevermore's banked away at the last second. Jaune didn't waste the opportunity and immediately took off running.

He could see the pathway Yang had opened up allowing closing as the Grimm slowly regained their bearings.

He heard a screech as the Nevermore's started to come from behind him.

Jaune cursed to himself. He had hoped that the spikes would afford him more time. But it seems that he was not afforded that luxury.

Jaune suddenly skidded to a stop and spun around.

A black spike jutted out from right where he had been standing. Its dark hue almost having a purple-like gleam in the afternoon sun.

Jaune stared at it in shock. What the hell type of Grimm could do this?

"Jaune!" Pyrrha yelled again.

Jaune snapped out of his stupor and took off running again. Noticing how the Nevermore's seemed to have backed off.

To his luck and immense displeasure, Jaune barely made it through the open pocket. Jumping into the forest just as the pocket closed and an Ursa Major swiped at him.

Jaune wasted no time scaling up the tree. Blake had lowered her weapon in its grappling hook form allowing him to grab on and ascend easier.

Once he finally reached the section of branches everyone was located he fell to his back and started panting.

Feeling a sense of backlash starting to kick in from all the mana he had used. He still had a little bit of mana left in his core. But it was in his best interest if he didn't exhaust what he had left.

"Are you ok?!" Ruby asked, leaning over him.

Jaune nodded. "Yeah…my semblance just takes a lot out of me. Overuse and all."

"Obviously!" Weiss pointed out. "It's like you're manipulating dust in its purest form."

"I know right!" Ruby cheered. "It's like magic!"

Weiss scoffed while Pyrrha jumped down next to them and helped Jaune into a sitting position.

"Are you alright Jaune?" She softly asked.

Jaune nodded. "I'm fine. But have any of you seen anything like that before?" He asked, pointing to the spike.

The group looked at the ominous spike. Tall and black. Standing proudly tall as all the Grimm seemed to avoid it.

Then it vanished. Sinking back into the ground as it was never there in the first place.

Jaune felt a sense of unease fill his stomach. The rest of the group did as well.

"So…wanna head back for lunch?" Nora asked.

No one was surprised by how quickly everyone else agreed.

.

.

.

.

.

Ozpin frowned at his tablet, noticing the spike. Glynda did as well and Sylvie was wondering what had them so on edge.

"Glynda, change of plans. Mr Arc will be with me during your class for the first semester. Should I deem his skills adequate he will join you for the second."

"Agreed, but for that to happen so close to Beacon-

"The Emerald Forest is a place filled with the unknown. A great place to hide where you don't want eyes to see you."

Ozpin flipped from the spike to the group resting on trees. Watching as they all rushed to Jaune's side to make sure the boy was ok.

"However, it seems Mr Arc has shined through with his leadership. More than I could have hoped for along with Ms Rose."

"Yes, those students do complement each other quite well. But that still doesn't change the fact of what has just happened."

Ozpin nodded. "And you are correct, which is why we need to help Mr Arc with his semblance for when our mysterious stranger is revealed."

Glynda could do nothing but sigh in resignation as she reached up and scratched Sylvie behind the ear.

She was surprised but not unwelcoming to the scratches.

"And how does it go reaching out to our friends?" Glynda asked.

"I've already sent word. All we can do now is wait."

"Which ones did you send for? How many?"

"Two," Ozpin replied. "The Grandmother and Inventor."

"Not the general? Not the Titan?"

Ozpin shook his head. "Those two are on…different assignments. Too far out to be within reasonable contact. Besides, I think the Grandmother can help with the insight Mr Arc needs."

Glynda stopped scratching Sylvie and the fox wondered what the two had talked about. Trying to remember and failing, but one word she did remember was Grandmother.

Was that an Asura? And if so why refer to her as Grandmother? Was it because Asura's aged much slower than humans?

"They're back," Ozpin stated.

Sylvie was broken from her thoughts seeing Jaune and the others return. A wave of happiness flooded from her to Jaune through their bond.

Causing the boy to look up and wave.

.

.

.

.

"Cardin Winchester, Dove Bronzewing, Sky Lark, Russel Thrush. Henceforth you will now be known as team CRDL (Cardinal) led by Cardin Winchester."

A wave of cheers erupted from the amphitheater as the team stood at attention. Back's straight and eyes forward as Ozpin dismissed them.

"Jaune Arc, Pyrrha Nikos, Lie Ren, Nora Valkyrie," Ozpin called out.

The four approached the stage. Taking the same stance as the people before them as their pictures appeared on a screen above them.

"For acquiring the queen piece you will henceforth be known as team JNPR (Juniper) with your team leader being Jaune Arc."

A roar of cheers erupted once more as Jaune's brow furrowed with confusion. He hadn't expected to be named team leader.

But Pyrrha smiled and playfully punched his shoulder. Nora had a wide grin on her face as she grabbed Ren in a bear hug.

They promptly exited off the stage as Ozpin began calling Ruby and the others. But Jaune wasn't really listening.

He was the team leader.

'Leader.'

The word tasted funny and he wasn't sure how to react to it. Leader, he was a leader now. In charge of the lives of those under his command.

"You will henceforth be known as team RWBY (RUBY) with your team leader as Ruby Rose."

Ozpin's voice snapped Jaune from his stupor and he clapped for his friend. But his mind kept drifting back to him being team leader.

He was in charge. Him. He had to tell Saphron the good news. As soon as possible.

Jaune walked out into the courtyard of Beacon. The sun was setting off in the distance painting the city in a beautiful orange hue.

Sylvie walked alongside him. Running off and playing in the grass as Jaune walked further. Taking a spot at the edge of the dock and peering over.

The city of Vale was so beautiful in the sunset.

He smiled as he grabbed his scroll. Opening it and pressing on his sister's contact. The line began to ring as he put it up to his ear.

"Hello," Spahron said, picking up.

"I did it." Jaune smiled.

He heard Saphron gasp. "No way really?!"

Jaune nodded but realized she couldn't see that. "Yeah, I made it."

"Oooh I'm so proud of you Jaune!" Saphron cheered. "Details now, tell me all about it." She demanded.

Jaune laughed and sat down. Letting his legs dangle over the edge. "Well, it started with us getting launched into the Emerald Forest. I had fun flying before gravity pulled me back down."

He heard Saphron chuckle on the other side of the line.

"But I was able to land safely only for a javelin to fly past my head."

"It didn't hit you did it?" Saphron asked.

"No it missed, but I later found out it was from a girl trying to help me land."

"You sure she wasn't trying to kill you?" Saphron sharply questioned.

"Yeah I'm sure, she apologized profusely and we teamed up. She's actually my partner now for the next four years."

"Ooooh." Saphron cooed. "What's her name?"

Jaune rolled his eyes. "One it's not like that and two her name is Pyrrha."

Saphron went quiet on the other side of the line for a second. "Did you say Pyrrha?"

"Uh, yeah."

"Is her last name Nikos?"

"Yeah."

"As in the four-time Mistral champion Pyrrha Nikos?"

"The very same."

"Liar."

"Wha-I'm not lying!"

"You mean to tell me, my little brother. Met the Invincible Girl and now has her as his teammate."

"Oh, and I also was made team leader."

"OH MY GOD YOU'RE A TEAM LEADER?"

Jaune had to move the scroll from his ear at his sister's shriek. Once the ringing stopped he brought it back.

"Yeah, I was surprised as well. But Professor Ozpin chose me and gave me a leadership role. My team is called JNPR."

"Aw, that's such an adorable little name. Quick tell me who your other teammates are."

Jaune rolled his eyes at his sister's teasing. "There's Lie Ren who's generally really quiet. He hasn't spoken more than a few words since we got here. His partner is Nora Valkyrie and the difference between them is night and day. Ren's quiet and Nora's the life of the party in a manner of speaking. I mean she rode a Grimm during initiation and that's when I knew I wanted her on my team."

"Why's that?"

"Who do you know is crazy enough to ride a Grimm until it dies from exhaustion and fear?"

Saphron was silent for a second. "Fair point. And what about Ren?"

"From what I was able to see and hear he's more of an agile ninja type. Great for scouting and hit and run attacks."

"You sound like Sam with your little strategies." Saphron teased.

"Ugh don't remind me of her classes."

"Or the little tests she ran on you. Hey, Jaune see if you can light this on fire. Hey Jaune, make this egg explode. Hey Jaune, use your fire to propel this hot air balloon I created."

Jaune started laughing remembering those times. Where everything had been so simple.

He sighed and shook his head. "That's not all, I made a few friends as well."

"Spill the details."

"Well, first there's Ruby. I met her right after the airship landed. Mostly because she blew herself up accidentally. But she looked like she needed a friend so I went up and introduced myself to her. Sylvie likes her as well so that's a plus. Oh, and she also jumped ahead two years as well."

"Hmmm, very impressive. I assume that means she's a good fighter?"

"She's a good shot from what I've heard. I haven't seen her fight much but I do know that for a fact. She's the team leader of our sister team named RWBY."

"Won't that get confusing?"

"Hey, I don't make the names." Jaune pointed out.

"Alright and who else is there?"

"Well, Ruby has an older sister named Yang. Her I did see fight and I have to say she fits the brawler archetype well. Sylvie likes her as well. Then there's Weiss and Blake. I don't know the two that much but Weiss is a rule stickler and Blake likes books."

"Sounds like you have yourself a solid friend group."

"In a manner of speaking. I'm still trying to wrap my head around being a team leader."

"If the headmaster himself chose you personally to lead your team I think he saw something impressive."

Jaune hummed. "Maybe you're right, but I should get going. I kind of ditched everyone to come talk to you."

"Oh well, you can't do that anymore Jaune. They're your friends, you gotta stick with them. But I do always enjoy your calls."

"I enjoy our calls too. Next time I see you I'll tell you all about how initiation went. Give Adrian the chance to actually see his Uncle in person and not over a scroll."

"I'd like that a lot, Jaune…oh and before I forget Sam's birthday is in a few months."

"Yes I know, get her a gift and send it to you so you can send it to her I know the deal." Jaune sighed. "I'll try and find some niche book she hasn't read before. You know if she still likes the Heartfire series?"

"Jaune she finished reading that last year."

"Shit." Jaune cursed then sighed. "Well, I'll figure something out. I still have a few months."

"You do that, but I'll let you go now. Bye Jaune I love you."

"Love you too Saph."

Jaune heard the line click and he took his scroll away from his ear. The city of Vale was still bathed in the sunset.

Leading Jaune to smile and capture the moment. He sent the picture to Saphron who commented on how pretty the view was.

After taking another minute to sightsee Jaune pushed himself up and made his way back to the courtyard.

Sylvie popping out of the grass and hopping on his shoulder. 'The grass is very soft and fun to roll around in.'

'I'm glad you had fun. But I think it's time we reacquaint ourselves with everyone else.'

'Agreed.'

.

.

.

.

Beacon's dorm rooms were a cozy little thing. With enough room for four beds equally spaced out and a bathroom off to the left along with a window to see the campus grounds.

It was big enough for four people but not too big to be ridiculous. However, there was one scathing issue. Since there was only one room and four beds it altered the team to one glaring issue.

"Girls change in the bathroom." Jaune immediately decreed. "Ren and I can just turn our backs to each other."

"Agreed." The other three said.

However, there was still some time before bed. So the four gathered around in a circle and began to get to know each other better.

"So, it looks like we're going to be bunking together for the next four years," Pyrrha said.

"That it does," Ren added.

"It's nice to meet all of you. I'm Nora and I'm really, really glad to meet both of you."

"It's nice to meet you as well, Nora." Jaune smiled. I have to say you took us by surprise riding in on that Beowulf like you did."

"Oh yeah, well I always wanted to ride one and well there was the chance so it took it. It was a lot of fun too. You should try it!"

"Maybe another time." Pyrrha nervously chuckled.

"Ooh, maybe a Nevermore."

Jaune could see Ren pale considerably causing him to stifle a laugh. "Alright, let me cut in with something serious for a second. Then we can go back to finding out what Grimm to ride."

Nora's eyes brightened while Pyrrha's widened and Ren's closed in resignation.

"Alright, first things first I want to get everyone's strengths and weaknesses. Then from there, we can make a workout plan and practice team-building exercises. Whether that's through training or watching a movie. Hell, it could even be something as simple as going for ice cream. As long as it's us doing something as a team I'll count it."

His team nodded along. Agreeing with his sentiment of the team exercises and training.

"So I will start us off so no one feels like they have to go first." Jaune began as he cleared his throat. "Alright, first things first. Without my semblance, I cannot perform in long-range or medium-range combat. I can however be on the frontline with my sword and shield taking his as I have a big aura supply. So I will take the place of our frontline."

The group nodded and Pyrrha cleared her throat to go next.

"I'm good at all types of combat. Long, medium, and short range." Pyrrha paused for a second and looked around the room. "Not many people know this but my semblance allows me to control poles, and I would like to keep that a secret as well."

"Got it," Jaune said.

"My lips are sealed," Nora said, mimicking closing a zipper over her lips. "Ren hold the key."

Ren stuck his hand out and Nora dropped the imaginary key in his hand.

"I won't say anything," Ren added.

Pyrrha breathed a sigh of relief before continuing. "My weaknesses, I don't know about them. I know I have them, I just don't know what they are."

Jaune smiled. "That's ok, the training will help us find that out."

"Ooh me next! Me next!" Nora pleaded.

Jaune gave her a nod giving her the all-clear to speak.

"Ok, I'm really good at breaking things. Like really, really good. Ask Ren and he'll tell you. I can use my sledgehammer to bash and crash our foes away. Or I can shoot them with my grenade launcher and make them go boom! Ooh, and my semblance allows me to absorb electricity. My weakness would be I don't know how much I can absorb, and It takes me a while to make my grenades. So I have to manage my ammo count whenever I'm in battle."

"Well, we have the next couple of days off before class begins. Why don't we head into Vale and buy some supplies? For all of us." Jaune suggested.

"Can we stop at a diner for breakfast?" Nora asked.

"Sure, we'll have a day out on the town before school starts," Jaune answered.

"I'm in!"

"It sounds fun," Pyrrha added.

Ren said nothing but nodded. Then realized it was his turn and began to speak. "I'm good at short to medium-range combat. My machine pistols are easy to maintain as well as the blades on them. My semblance isn't good for combat against people, but it allows me to mask my emotions from the Grimm along with one other person as long as I'm touching them. My weakness would probably be my lack of stopping power and that."

Jaune felt his eyes nearly bulge out of his head. "I'm sorry did you say you can mask your emotions with your semblance?"

Ren nodded. "Yes, I did."

Jaune had to stop himself from laughing in glee. "You are perfect for scouting and sneak attacks! I mean seriously you can make it so the Grimm can't see you. There are so many things we can do with that on missions."

Ren couldn't help but smile. It didn't reach his eyes and was a very small one but it was a smile nonetheless.

"And what about our fifth member here?" Nora asked.

Jaune raised a brow before Nora pointed to Sylvie resting in Jaune's lap.

"Oh, well Sylvie here can bite all the ankles and scratch all the eyes she wants. Isn't that right Sylv?"

The fox peeked over his legs and nodded. Causing the girls to gush at her cuteness and Ren to smile just a little more.

"Alright, so the plan is tomorrow we head into Vale, spend the day in the city. Then after that, we start preparing for classes. That sounds agreeable to everyone?"

"Yup." Pyrrha nodded.

"Aye, aye fearless leader?" Nora saluted.

Ren said nothing but nodded.

"Alright then, with planning out of the way I declare that our first team meeting is adjourned!" Jaune then cleared his throat. "So have any of you heard about that new Spruce Willis movie?"

"Oh my god, I love his movies! My favorite is Harder Dead!" Nora cheered.

"I liked his acting in Mana Manga." Pyrrha chimed in.

"Wasn't that a romance movie?" Ren asked.

Pyrrha blushed as red as her hair but nodded.

"I liked him in that too. But the female lead wasn't that good." Ren added.

Pyrrha's eyes lit up as she quickly nodded. "I know! It's like she was trying to be quirky and snarky but innocent at the same time and it didn't work."

Jaune just tilted his head in a mix of confusion and amusement. "I did not take you for a romance movie type of guy."

Ren shrugged. "Nora likes her explosions. I like a good story."

"Fair." Jaune acquiesced.

"What about you, Jaune?" Nora asked. "Ooh wait let me guess. You like hero stories."

"Aha, I knew it!"

"Aw that's so adorable."' Pyrrha cooed.

"I don't want to hear it, Ms. Romcom!"

"Oh Jaune, quickly you must come. A fair maiden has been trapped in a tower and only you can save her." Nora bemoaned.

She started laughing and fell onto her back. "You have to save the princess Jaune. Only you, her brave knight can-bwhahahaha."

Nora started laughing like a madwoman. Grabbing her sides as Jaune just bit his lip and rolled his eyes.

"I missed when we made fun of Pyrrha."

"Oh, Jaune." Pyrrha softly called out, putting a hand over her chest. "You must save me from my evil stepmother. She's locked me up in this tower and thrown away the key."

"Not you too." Jaune groaned.

Pyrrha couldn't keep the act up for long and began giggling along with Nora's boisterous laughter. Even Ren was struggling to keep his composure.

"Alright laugh it up." Jaune sighed.

'What are you doing Jaune? Your princess needs you.'

'Oh, not you too!'

He heard Sylvie laugh through their link, and despite his best efforts Jaune couldn't help but laugh along as well.

The atmosphere was lighthearted and fun. Filled with joy and the sounds of laughter as Jaune and Ren finally cracked.

No one laughed as loud as Nora. But they laughed all the same. And Jaune knew right then and there. That he already loved his team.

Chapter 7

Vale was bright, lovely, and filled with happiness and cheer. Mothers took their kids shopping for school supplies. Shops were opening up and getting ready for their day. Housewives did some grocery shopping before the stores were packed.

Off in the distance a new building was being built. With construction workers yelling and cussing each other out. The foreman shaking his head after relaxing in his air-conditioned car and having to break the fight up.

Team JNPR heard none of this though. Sat in a booth at a cozy little diner in the city. With very few customers coming in. Idly watching as cars drove past.

Those who were already inside were seated either at the counter or another booth. The smell of freshly brewed coffee filled the air.

'I hate that smell.' Sylvie cringed, shaking her head. She was lazing in the window bathing in the sun.

Jaune reached over and scratched the top of her head. Causing her to lean back and accept the scratches with glee. Crocea Mors sat next to him. Propped up against the table and easy to reach should he need it.

He was dressed in a simple white T-shirt and jeans. Opting to leave his hoodie and armor back at Beacon.

'I know you do. But it's to be expected in a diner.'

"Oh, Sylvie you are so cute." Nora cooed, scratching behind her ears. "Oh yes you are, yes you are."

Nora was dressed in a simple white shirt with a heart opening in the middle along with a pink skirt.

Jaune moved his hand and let Nora coo over Sylvie. He turned and saw Pyrrha holding a menu with her brow scrunched in concentration.

"You know, if you can't think of what to order." He leaned over. "You could always order some Pumpkin-Pete cereal."

Pyrrha promptly responded by elbowing him in the side. "That cereal isn't good."

"I know." Jaune chuckled. "I just wanted the hoodie."

Pyrrha rolled her eyes but couldn't help the playful smile that crossed her face. "So what are you getting?"

Pyrrha herself was dressed casually as well. Opting for a simple green blouse and red pants. With two simple golden earrings as accessories. It was the first time Jaune hadn't seen her in her spartan wear.

Jaune looked at his menu. Giving it a small once over his eyes landed on the chocolate chip pancakes.

"I am in the mood for some chocolate chip pancakes."

"They have pancakes?!" Nora shrieked before being shushed by Jaune, Pyrrha, and Ren.

Nora didn't seem embarrassed as she looked at Jaune expectantly.

He sighed. "Yes Nora, they have pancakes."

The girl's eyes brightened with excitement and Jaune could have sworn they had turned into said food. But when he blinked her eyes were back to their normal size.

"Oooh Renny, let's get the pancakes!"

Ren could do nothing but sigh as Nora grabbed his arm and started tugging on it. He was dressed as he normally was. With his long-sleeved green shirt and white pants.

"So uh…I'm guessing Nora likes pancakes?" Pyrrha asked.

"Like, is a loose term but yes," Ren answered.

Jaune looked from the over-eager girl to his bond. Still resting on the windowsill and bathing in the sunlight.

'I'm guessing you want a whole plate of bacon to yourself?'

'Hmmm, that sounds lovely.'

Jaune took another look at the menu to decide what drink he wanted. He decided on a simple water as it was supposed to be a little hot today.

'The environment is a huntsman's second worst enemy.' Sylvie gruffly said through their bond. Taking in the voice of his Grandfather.

Jaune rolled his eyes as a waitress arrived. An older woman with cherry blonde hair and red eyes. Dressed in a white button-up shirt and black slacks. Over her clothes was an apron with pockets that held straws, utensils, and a notepad and pen.

"Well, good morning. What can I get for you four to start you off?" She asked with a hint of a Vacuan draw.

"Oooh me first!" Nora waved, grabbing her attention.

The waitress smiled and gestured for Nora to speak.

"Pancakes! Lots and lots of pancakes. As high as you can stack them!"

"Nora she meant drinks," Ren whispered.

"Oh. I'll have juice."

The waitress smiled. "If you're ready to order I can take that too. I'll just jot you down for lots of pancakes."

Nora's smile beamed as the waitress turned her attention to Ren.

"I'll have juice as well and some scrambled eggs with bacon on the side."

"Bacon and eggs with juice. And you?"

Pyrrha hummed at the menu before turning to Jaune. "I simply can't decide. But whatever he orders I'll also have."

"And your drink?" The waitress asked with a raised brow.

"Oh water."

The waitress jotted down the notes before looking at Jaune. "And what will you be ordering for you and the young lady?"

"I would like some chocolate pancakes with bacon and water."

"And your little friend."

Jaune turned to Sylvie lazing in the sun and smiled. "She'll have a plate of bacon all to herself."

The waitress finished jotting down the orders before closing her notebook and putting it back in her apron.

"Alright, I'll go and put the order in. Allow me to take these. And please keep that sword in its sheathe."

She reached down to grab the menus and Jaune nodded and helped her gather them up. The waitress then left, leaving the team alone.

"Ooh, fearless leader. We need a new name." Nora said.

Jaune quirked a brow looking at Pyrrha and Ren who both shrugged. They had no idea what the girl was thinking.

"And why is that?" He asked.

Nora held her hands out to Sylvie. "Because we have five teammates. Duh!" She said it like it was the most obvious thing in the world.

Sylvie perked her head up before standing and jumping into Nora's lap. She peered over the table as the girl embraced her and shot Jaune a smug look.

'Yeah! I'm the mascot so that means I'm included!'

Jaune shook his head and chuckled. "You make a good point. From now on team JNPR is now JNPRS."

"Junipers?" Pyrrha questioned.

"Yup."

"That's just our name but plural." Ren pointed out.

"Sylvie's name begins with an S."

Ren nodded. "Fair point."

"I love it! We're the mighty team JNPRS!" Nora cheered holding Sylvie.

His bond said nothing but Jaune could feel a wave of happiness roll off her. Multiplied by a thousand as a plate of bacon was set down in front of her.

Jaune's eyes widened in absolute shock and disbelief seeing a mountain of pancakes tower over him.

Yet the waitress seemed to have no problem as she slid the plate over to Nora. The girl was blocked from his sight but he could hear her laughing in glee behind it.

"What in the absolute-,"

"I told you Nora liked pancakes." Ren cut him off.

"That's uh, that's a lot." Pyrrha shakily added.

"That thing's taller than me!" Jaune pointed out. "Are you sure she can eat it all?"

Ren flicked his eyes to the pancakes and back to Jaune. "This is light work for her."

Both Jaune and Pyrrha paled considerably as their plates and drinks were handed to them. The waitress still had the same enthusiastic smile on her face as before.

"Now if that will be all I wish you a good breakfast."

Jaune gave her a confirming nod and the waitress left. Leaving the team baffled as Nora began to inhale the pancakes.

.

.

"Ooh, come on guys we're almost that the weapons shop!" Nora cheered skipping down the street.

Pyrrha and Jaune meanwhile were horrified at what they had just witnessed. Sylvie rested on Jaune's shoulder content with her breakfast.

"H-how…how is that even possible?"

"She's so small."

"But she ate that much and wanted seconds."

Jaune shuddered. "I'd throw up if I ate that much."

Pyrrha couldn't even think of a response.

The walk to the weapons store wasn't long. Only a couple of minutes away from the diner.

Cars sped by and more and more people were starting to walk the streets. Jaune watched a mother pull her kid back to the bus stop just as a car sped by.

He only heard a part of the scolding that followed. Having arrived at the weapons shop much to the delight of Nora.

'Hey, look across the street.' Sylvie said.

Jaune turned around just as his team entered the store. Seeing a bookstore across the street named Tucson's book store.

'Well, we know where to go to get Sam a present.'

The door behind him opened and Pyrrha peaked her head out. "Jaune." She called out. "Are you coming in?"

Jaune turned and opened the door wider. "Yeah, just saw another store I need to visit next month."

"Why next month?"

"Because it gives me time to think of what book to get my sister for her birthday."

Jaune walked inside the weapons store and saw a whole plethora of weapons. Guns, swords, spears, javelins, pickaxes, shovels, and many more. All lined up neatly on racks. Along with ammo and materials on shelves around the shop.

Behind the counter seemed to be a gruff old man with tan skin and a bald head. His golden eyes were locked onto a weapons magazine as Nora and Ren wandered.

"I didn't know you had a sister."

"Seven." Jaune chuckled. "All older."

Pyrrha winced. "Ooh, sounds fun."

Jaune somberly smiled. "For a time, but coming up with a gift for Sam is hard. She's such a brainiac it's hard to find something for her."

Pyrrha didn't miss how Jaune's face dropped when thinking of his sisters. But opted not to ask him about it. The two had only really known each other for a day. And while they were teammates they weren't that close yet.

"Let me guess, her childhood was spent with her nose in a book?"

"Try her nose in six." Jaune laughed. Pyrrha found she quite liked that sound. "I mean Sam was able to read by the time she was four and read about ten thousand or so books by the time she moved out."

Pyrrha's brow raised as high as it could in shock. "That many books? That sounds like a whole city's library. Your poor parents."

"You could say that if we were poor. But my family has a big name for itself where I'm from that stretches all the way across Mantle and Atlas. Such prestige earns a lot of money and favors."

"Ooh, Ren look! They had timed fuses and sticky grenades!" Nora cheered from across the shop. With Ren following dutifully behind her.

Both Jaune and Pyrrha watched them disappear further into the shop. While the two opted to stay in the front browsing other weapons.

"So is that why you came to Vale? To escape your family name?"

Jaune fiddled with a sword. "In a sense, I'm proud to be an Arc. Always have been and always will be. But I needed to set out and forge my own path, and I couldn't do that cooped up at home."

He placed the sword back on the rack not liking the weight of it. Besides he had something much better equipped at his hip.

"I can understand that. I came to Beacon to try and escape all the fame." She wryly chuckled. "Guess it didn't work out too well though."

"Well, your nickname is the Invincible Girl." Jaune pointed out. "You're much more likely to stick out than someone like me."

Pyrrha regarded him with a tilt of her head. "You have a point there. Still, it was nice to dream for a while."

"Dreams are nice," Jaune said. "I remember when I was younger I dreamed of taking up my family's ancient weapon." Jaune looked down at his hip and patted the weapon. "Now look at me, finally wielding it after so long."

Pyrrha looked at his weapon before looking back into his eyes. 'What a beautiful shade of blue they are.' She thought.

"You wield it well." She complimented.

"Thanks."

Jaune perused another sword. Not intending to buy anything but it still felt nice to look around.

Meanwhile, Pyrrha glanced over to Ren who had his hands filled with many materials to make grenades with.

All while a gleeful Nora giggled like a maniac.

Everything was calm, well as calm as something could be with a girl like Nora around.

Pyrrha turned her gaze back to Jaune. Watching as his brow knitted forward in thought while Sylvie lazily slept on his shoulders.

It all felt normal.

"You ok Pyrrha?" Jaune called out.

Pyrrha quickly shook her stupor away. "Yes, I'm fine…hey Jaune, can we-can we go on a picnic?"

"A picnic?"

Pyrrha blushed slightly and quickly raised her hands. "Y-yeah, a picnic. You know with all of us as a team. Not just you and me because that would be weird and I was just wondering since I've never had one ya know and-,"

"Pyrrha." Jaune cut her off. "I don't mind the picnic. Besides that gives us something to do for lunch. Let's see what the others think."

Pyrrha looked away in embarrassment. A picnic? What was she thinking? What brought that on?

"Hmm." Jaune hummed. "When was the last time I had a picnic?" He wondered.

Whether he noticed Pyrrha's embarrassment or not Jaune didn't say. Pyrrha however felt mortified at asking for a picnic.

What was she a child?

'Well, it does seem nice to try one?' She thought.

The two then heard a loud thud as Nora dropped all her supplies on the counter.

"We'd like these to go please!" She declared.

Ren gently set the rest of her things down and sighed. "Nora, this isn't a restaurant."

"Oh."

The clerk wasted no time in ringing the items up. Jaune and Pyrrha approached the counter just as the total was ringed up. Before Nora could freak out about the price Jaune paid for it much to her delight.

"Oh, you're the best fearless leader!"

The clerk sighed and began packing up everything she had bought. While Jaune looked to Ren next.

"So, you two up for a picnic?"

.

.

.

A few hours passed with the team roaming around Vale. Taking in the sights of the city such as the waterfront. Watching as ships came and went across the water.

After they were done with that Ren wanted to check out a bookstore so they went to one nearby.

They didn't go to the one Jaune saw earlier. But one closer to the docks that had a great view of the waterfront.

Ren had gotten two books. One about Mistralian poetry and another about flowers.

No one on the team questioned his choices, and soon after left the bookshop to head back to Beacon and drop everything off.

After dropping everything off the team grabbed a blanket, a basket, and a few other things before heading back to Vale and finding a park.

Which is where they are now. Sitting in the shade under a massive oak tree. Watching as kids ran around and people walked their dogs.

Team JNPRS ate their lunch contently.

"Oh, Renny I can't even remember the last time we had a picnic."

"Yes, it has been a while."

"I think the last time I had a picnic was with my family when we went to Shion village," Jaune added. "God that had to have been when I was eleven."

'Twelve.' Sylvie corrected.

"Well, this is my first one," Pyrrha mumbled. "I like it."

"This is your first picnic?" Nora asked.

Pyrrha nodded and Nora immediately looked at Jaune.

"Fearless leader, I propose weekly picnics from here on out."

Jaune chuckled at the idea. "Let's see how the school year goes first."

The food was simple. Nothing fancy. Just a few sandwiches, bags of chips, some cookies, and juice and water.

Nothing special.

And yet Pyrrha couldn't have been more delighted.

Nora was chowing down on her sandwich. Ren ate his at a slower and more respectable pace. Jaune ate half of his before giving the rest to Sylvie.

Pyrrha had just finished hers when the team's scrolls buzzed. They didn't waste any time in checking them. Seeing a message from the school about their classes.

"Ooh, they finally sent us our schedules!" Nora cheered.

"Let's see if we have any classes together," Pyrrha said.

"I have Professor Port first period and Professor Oobleck second. Then I have a free period for the third and for the fourth I have…Professor Ozpin?"

"Professor Ozpin offers a class?" Pyrrha asked as the rest of the team gathered around him.

"I don't have him. I have Professor Goodwitch for fourth period. Combat class." Pyrrha said.

"Same," Nora added.

"I do as well."

Jaune's brow furrowed as Sylvie looked at his scroll. "Huh, well that's weird. Maybe it's a leadership class?"

'I think we both know it isn't that.' Sylvie chimed in.

"Maybe," Pyrrha added. "Maybe he's taking you on as a private student for how well you did during initiation."

"Yeah, that makes sense. Fearless leader was pretty cool during that."

"What do you guys have for elective day?" Jaune asked.

The classes at Beacon were split into two days. Normal class day and elective day. With normal classes, you weren't able to choose which class you took as it was part of the curriculum. But with elective day you were able to pick what class you wanted to take that best suited your interests.

"I have Professor Greene for stealth and security, and Professor Peach for Plant science," Ren said.

"Only those two?" Pyrrha asked.

Ren shrugged. "Nothing else caught my attention."

"Oh, what the hell, I have Ozpin all day for elective day as well," Jaune said.

"Woah," Nora added. "Looks like he really took an interest in you, fearless leader."

Jaune let out a sigh and closed his scroll. "So it looks like we only have two classes together."

"I have a study hall for third period," Pyrrha said. "But maybe I can use that time and we can get some training in." She offered.

"Ren and I won't be able to join you since we have weapons maintenance Mulberry."

"Wait, that seems like a class we should all have. So how come Pyrrha and I don't?"

Ren shrugged. "Maybe your weapons are easier to maintain? I mean yours is a simple sword and shield. Pyrrha's…well it might be because of who she is."

Nora just laid down and groaned. "Ugh, our schedules are weird!"

Jaune laughed and shook his head. "That they are."

"Well, we can always get in some extra training after classes are done," Pyrrha suggested.

"And we will," Jaune said, lying down. "But enough about school for right now. Let's just enjoy such a nice day."

A nice steady breeze blew past and the clouds overhead took on many shapes and sizes.

Nora and Jaune tried to point out all the shapes they could see through the tree while Ren and Pyrrha sat there in silence and watched.

Sylvie slept after finishing her sandwich and sunbathed.

Pyrrha found the odd moment of peace to be one of happiness. One of normalcy, where she wasn't the Invincible girl. Or an actor for a commercial. Or the four-time Mistral champion.

So many titles and many more were surely to come. But right now, in this single moment. Surrounded by her team, she was Pyrrha Nikos.

Just Pyrrha Nikos.

The wind blew again. This time a little more harshly causing fallen leaves to kick up and her red hair to blow wildly.

She had to place a hand on her hair to keep it steady, and by the time it had stopped, Jaune was sitting up and looking at her.

'Such beautiful eyes.' Pyrrha thought.

"Something wrong?" She asked.

The boy didn't respond immediately. Instead, he lifted his hand toward her head and plucked a green leaf from her hair.

"Leaf in your hair." He replied.

"O-oh." She blushed. "Thanks."

Jaune smiled and tossed it away while Nora and Ren gave each other a confused look.

"You guys up for an arcade?" Jaune asked.

.

.

.

.

The day Jaune spent in Vale was one of the best of his life. He couldn't remember the last time he had so much fun. He finally felt like he could let loose for once and have fun.

Not being locked up in a gilded cage he had once called home.

Right now the four teens were giggling as they made their way to the bullhead docks. Pyrrha trying and failing to look mortified.

"I can't believe we got kicked out." She muttered. Trying but failing to suppress a fit of giggles.

"Hey, I told you not to let Nora near the whack-a-mole machine."

"We didn't think she'd get a score so high the machine would break!"

"Yeah!" Nora cheered. "High score Nora in the house!"

"We're outside."

"High score Nora in the wild!"

"Now that sounds like a danger to society." Jaune teased.

The four laughed and boarded a bullhead. Jaune popped a piece of gum into his mouth as Pyrrha gave the pilot an all-clear to take off.

The bullhead lurched and then lifted. Allowing the group to see the afternoon sun over Vale. It would set soon and be time for dinner. Something which the team had decided to take back at Beacon after their day out on the town.

Jaune stumbled a bit before finding a seat and sitting down. Pyrrha immediately moved to his side in worry as Sylvie jumped down.

"Are you alright Jaune?" She asked.

Jaune nodded. "Yeah, just a little dizzy. But hey at least I'm not throwing up." He joked.

Pyrrha noticed a cold sweat building on his forehead. "Are you sure you're ok?"

Jaune nodded. "Yeah, we've just been taking a lot of bullhead rides today. I'll be better once we get back on solid ground."

Pyrrha still remained worried. Nora and Ren were too.

They didn't have to wait long. The bullhead landed a few minutes later and Pyrrha helped Jaune off the bullhead.

The boy took a deep breath of fresh air once stepping foot on the docks. "Well, there's another one of my weaknesses. Motion sickness and vertigo." He joked.

He gave the group a smile which put them at ease.

"Well, as long as you're ok," Pyrrha added.

"I am, it's just something I've had my whole life." He chuckled. "Oh, you should've seen how bad it was when I was younger. Just looking at a bullhead made me want to hurl."

Nora and Ren were at ease, Pyrrha however remained worried. But didn't push the matter.

The team began walking toward the entrance of the school. Passing through the courtyard and past the statue.

As they passed it however Nora spoke up.

"Ooh, we should take a picture!"

The other three stopped and turned to her.

"A picture?" Ren asked.

Nora quickly shook her head. "Yeah, you know, to commemorate our first team exercise."

Jaune thought about it for a second and realized it wasn't a terrible idea. And it could be good for morale as well.

"Sure why not." Jaune shrugged. He pulled out his scroll and went to his camera. He flipped it around and gestured for everyone to get in the picture.

Everyone huddled together and smiled. Well, Ren smiled as much as he wanted to anyway. And Jaune simply pressed the capture button and took the photo.

"Ooh, you even got the statue at a good angle." Nora squealed.

"You have some decent photography skills, Jaune."

"Be sure to send it to us?" Pyrrha asked.

"Of course, but let's go get dinner. I'm hungry."

.

.

.

.

Two days later Jaune and his team were in a gym they had reserved. Jaune had reserved it the day before to fully get a grasp on his team's abilities.

Starting with training bots. Tall metal robots that use either their fists or built-in machine pistols in their arms firing beanbag rounds. They had multiple levels ranging from 1-10. With one being the easiest and ten being the hardest.

"Alright, Ren you're up first. I'll set the training bot to level five and we'll see how you do from there." Jaune called out.

Ren nodded and readied his machine pistols as Jaune fiddled with the controls. Nora and Pyrrha sat on a bench behind him and observed. Sylvie opted to sit in Pyrrha's lap.

A second later the training bot came to life and focused on Ren.

Immediately it started shooting, forcing Ren to run to the side. Bullets harmlessly pelted against the stone of the training arena as he ran.

Ren skidded to a stop behind the robot and unleashed a flurry of bullets. All pelting against its metal exoskeleton.

The training bot turned its upper body a full 180 degrees and shot at Ren again. This time a few bullets hit Ren's but his aura stopped any damage. But it did chip at his supply.

He was already on the move again. Running and sliding underneath the training bot. The blades on his pistols disabling the legs leading him to spring up and kick the bot.

Already off balance from the slashes the bot tipped over and landed with a cloud bash. Leaving Ren to be the winner.

Nora clapped and whistled as Jaune powered the training bot down. Pyrrha gave a small round of applause as well.

Ren sighed and holstered his pistols in his sleeves as he walked over. Barely sweating and not tired at all.

"That was good. You maneuver pretty well and laid down an impressive amount of fire. But you did have to stop and shoot which allowed you to take damage in the end."

"Shooting while running is difficult. It messes up your balance and shots." Ren explained.

"I know, I myself am not that good with a gun. Can't even shoot straight with one. However, if we can improve your aim while running you'll be a much bigger threat in a fight as well as a constant annoyance to anyone we come across."

Ren nodded and Jaune gestured for Nora to step up. The girl smiled and grabbed her Magnhild off her back. She turned it into its sledgehammer form and took her spot from across the training bot who stood up.

"Alright, Nora I'm gonna crank it up to a six since you're more of a heavy hitter," Jaune called out.

"Got it, boss man!"

The training bot stood up once more. Fully functional after Ren's victory. Nora smiled as Jaune gave her to go ahead.

She wasted no time launching herself forward. Pressing down on a trigger she is able to trigger a small explosion allowing her to propel herself forward.

Nora raised Magnhild and slammed it down on the robot's head. Only for it to quickly raise its arms and push her back.

Nora flipped and used her weapon as cover once the bullets started raining down. She pressed her trigger down again and moved to the side.

Before landing on her feet and running forward. She reared her hammer back and slammed it directly into the robot's stomach.

It lurched forward from the sheer force of her blow. But was able to bring its metal elbow down on her shoulder.

Nora's aura absorbed the blow. But she had to jump back so she wasn't taken down with the robot.

The robot crumbled a second later. Shutting down as Nora cheered and jumped up and down.

"Nora!" Jaune called out.

The girl stopped her cheering and made her way back to her team. She stood awaiting her praise and criticisms as Jaune readied the bot again.

"Alright, when it comes to maneuvering and attacking you do that expertly. Your little trick with propulsion is smart and unexpected. However, you can be a little too aggressive. Grimm and other people alike may have the durability to take such a hit. Or in a person's case a semblance. So my advice to you is to be a tad less aggressive so you don't get grabbed by someone who can take a hit like that."

Nora nodded and gave Jaune a salute. "Aye aye, fearless leader!"

Jaune looked behind him at Pyrrha. The girl still sat on the bench petting Sylvie. Smiling as the soft white fur ran through her fingers.

"Pyrrha, your turn," Jaune said, breaking her focus.

She blinked and looked up at Jaune. Before smiling and setting Sylvie aside on the bench.

"Set it on ten please." She requested.

Jaune quirked a brow but didn't protest as he cracked the training bot all the way to max level.

"Oh and no using your semblance on the robot," Jaune said.

Pyrrha nodded and stepped into the ring. Her shield raised and javelin at the ready. Jaune smiled as he pressed begin and the training bot powered on.

It took Pyrrha all of twenty seconds to beat the training bot. And Jaune couldn't help the wide grin that formed on his face.

Once Pyrrha was done she dutifully if not excitedly walked over. A small smile on her face as she clasped her hands behind her back.

"Well in terms of speed and versatility when it comes to handling weapons you have all of us outclassed. You're fast, smart, have an excellent use of your semblance, and hit hard. You think your next move through and always leave enough space so you're not grabbed. However, since you beat the bot so quickly it didn't allow me enough time to look for any weaknesses. I think that avenue might need a human touch. So during third period tomorrow let's have a one-on-one so I can figure out a weakness we can work on."

Pyrrha smiled and nodded. "That sounds good to me. What do you want us to do next?"

Jaune smiled and switched the training robot for holograms of Grimm. "Next up we're going to work on strategies for engaging Grimm. We'll do this battle as a team and once I have a good grasp of how we work together I'll assign roles to each one of you."

The three nodded and Sylvie laid out across the bench knowing it wouldn't be used for a while.
