I'd been staying at Leah's for five days when the call came.
Five days of pretending I was fine. Five days of ignoring the constant ache in my chest where the mate bond pulled at me, begging me to go back to Damien. Five days of lying awake at night, feeling his pain through the bond and hating myself for causing it.
But I couldn't go back. Not yet. Not until I figured out if I could live with loving someone who might have to give me up.
"Claire?" Leah poked her head into the guest room. "Your old classmate Brad is on the phone. Something about a university fundraiser?"
I blinked, pulled from my thoughts. "Brad?"
"Yeah, class president Brad. The one who always tried to get you to join student council."
I took the phone, confused. "Hello?"
