The drive was silent, but it was a silence charged with unspoken purpose. Damien handled the car with an easy, predatory grace, navigating the city’s glittering evening traffic. I stared out the window, the trampled, dirt-stained pages of my manuscript sitting in my lap like a holy relic of my failure.
“Where are we going?” I finally asked, my voice still hoarse.
“To the launch party for the new Zenith luxury sedan,” he replied, his eyes fixed on the road. “Half of the city’s media, financial, and entertainment elite will be there. Including the head of Sterling Pictures, a number of influential producers, and, if my sources are correct, Seraphina and Julian, who are eager to celebrate their new acquisition.”
My stomach twisted into a knot. “You’re throwing me into the lion’s den.”
