Chapter 23 - Spying and Taxes

Accessing the system was easy after quickly looking through the files and current work. I was pleased to find that he was working on my request.

I turned on their webcam to see what they were doing.

It was a small cozy office with papers and books strewn all around. As well as numerous empty coffee cups.

There were only 2 people in the small office, both were Asian, one male, one female. They both had silky black hair and black eyes. The guy appeared to be in his 30s. His hair was messily slicked back and he had light stubble, he had an unkempt appearance while wearing his suit loosely.

The girl was younger, in her 20s. She was much more put together. Her hair was long and tied in a high pony tail. With her bangs shaping her face. She wore light blue jeans and a white cotton sweater.

He was working with the speed of a demon. Hands dancing across the key board with unmatched speed and precision.

Once he was done he yelled over to a girl to get something. I didn't understand because they were speaking in Cantonese. At least from what I could tell.

The pretty girl grabbed the papers fresh out of the printer and quickly skipped over to the guy. Who spun out of the chair grabbing the papers and giving the girl a quick kiss on the cheek. Before running out of the little office.

The guy was clearly a rogue, with handsome features, he deceives and cons people with friendliness. I'm sure he has a small mountain of connections all happily exasperated at his antics.

The girl left blushing was obviously an innocent girl who was often teased by the rogue.

Seeing their dynamic eased my worries significantly.

I felt as though I could finally rest easy.

So I closed out of their system and got ready to go to sleep.

I know I go to sleep early. I have to go to sleep early to wake up early.

As I was laying in bed starting to fall asleep I thought back to the lawyer.

My dream that night was about that very lawyer living out a modern 80s Private Eye life. Running around at the edge of the law charming everyone and somehow managing to get away scott free every time.

It was a fun little dream.

The next morning, when I woke up my first thought was of the lawyer and wondering what kind of day he really had.

Before you say anything, I am straight.

It is simple curiosity. I peered into their life and started to wonder what kind of life you would have to live to end up there?

How do you acquire all of the connections that I assumed he had?

I had many questions that would all go unanswered.

By the time I had woken up it was already 7:30 pm in Hong Kong, 6:30 am my time.

The average working hours in Hong Kong are 9 - 6. So I should have an email containing some good news.

Which I do.

Dear Mr. …, It has been a pleasure doing business with you enclosed below is all of the information pertaining to your business. The business bank account will be fully authorized after 12:00 am HKT when the day changes. Once again it has been a pleasure.

I opened the document to find that it indeed had all of the information I needed.

I used my Login information to login to my bank account, and there it sat in all of its minor glory.

An account that will be able to be used in about 4 and a half hours.

While I am waiting, let's contact an accountant. To handle my taxes. Since it is not tax season they should be fairly free.

I found one that does their work online, and sent an email.

They responded rather promptly. Only after a few minutes. They wanted to hop into a video call to go over my taxes.

Of course I said ok, but give me a minute.

I needed to change into more proper clothes, my hoodie and sweat pants weren't going to cut it.

I changed into some nice pants and a casual button up.

I sat in my desk chair and looked at my background. What sat behind me was a double bookshelf filled with books. Yeah that is fine I will look like a studious young man.

As much as I don't care about what people think about me, I do care about how I present myself. I always like to lead with my best foot forward.

When the call connected I saw the tax accountant. She was a normal older looking woman wearing professional attire. Her backdrop was also a bookshelf, but hers had various items or props. Rather than a ton of books. She had books but the whole thing looked really staged.

Professional, but staged.

She started, "Hello I am Mrs. … and I will be assisting you with your taxes today, so let's start with all of the basic information and documents before we get into the real numbers."

"Ok, well…" I replied with all of the information she needed.

"Ok. So you are a stock trader, how much have you made so far this year?"

"$145,285.65."

"... I'm sorry, how much?"

"$145,285.65."

"And… you made all of that this year right?"

"Yeah, in the last few days actually."

"So, how long ago did it take?"

"I started on Monday of this week. And today is Thursday, so 3 days ago?"

"You… made all of this, in 3 days?"

"Yep. And I started a business in Hong Kong for future earnings."

"In Hong Kong?"

"Yes, I already calculated how much I need to pay from the tax bracket online. I would just like a professional opinion for safety."

"Umm… ok. So how much are you thinking you will have to pay?"

"Around $27,000."

"Is that both Federal and state?"

"Oh… just federal. I forgot about state taxes. How much is state tax?"

"Luckily our state uses a flat rate which is 4.25% so you will have to pay around $6,000 on top of the $27,000."

"So somewhere around $33,000?"

"Yes."

"So if I just pay $35,000. I will be fine?"

"Well, so long as you don't make any more money this year."

"Ok… then I'll do that."
