Chapter 22 - Chapter 22: Highschool of the Dead

Dong! Dong! Dong!

The aluminum can Roy threw down made a crisp sound on the ground, acting like a signal. The zombies on the street simultaneously raised their heads.

The zombies charged towards Roy, vast and mighty, creating the oppressive feeling of a massive army.

The first zombie to arrive reached out its hands and fiercely lunged to bite him with its wide, bloody mouth.

Roy drew the Muramasa Sword and lightly swung it.

A sharp flash of light passed. The zombie's movement halted abruptly, its head horizontally split in two. The upper half slid off, revealing the brain matter inside.

These zombies needed their heads destroyed to be truly killed. It would take several hits with an ordinary knife or blunt object, but the Muramasa Sword was so sharp that it could easily slice through solid bone.

The first zombie died, but the ones behind it didn't react, continuing their advance. Their stiff faces showed no sign of fear, much like the monsters in the Dungeon—devoid of reason, only seeking to tear apart the human in front of them.

A grim smile appeared on Roy's face. Using the convenience store as his base, he slaughtered the zombies, defending the entrance alone, filled with the heroic fervor of one man holding the pass against ten thousand.

Every zombie that came died, without exception!

The zombies' basic stats were similar to Goblins, but a bite would result in poisoning. Since he lacked the Abnormal Resistance development ability, Roy couldn't guarantee he could withstand the corpse venom. Fortunately, his Agility attribute, which had surpassed its limit, allowed him to flexibly dodge all the zombies' attacks.

The corpses piled up like mountains, and blood flowed like a river.

When the kill count reached 160, the number of zombies attacking the convenience store began to dwindle.

[Strength (STR): $630 \to 636$ (C)]

[Endurance (END): $678 \to 698$ (C)]

Roy saw the updated panel. His Endurance attribute had noticeably increased. He rubbed his slightly sore shoulder, a wry smile creeping onto his face.

This business was pure physical labor!

Given the zombies' low base stats, it was virtually impossible for them to hurt him unless he was actively looking for trouble. However, killing a thousand zombies was no easy feat.

He would hit his stamina limit after slaying three or four hundred zombies, and his movements would noticeably slow down.

Roy stepped out of the convenience store, treading over the corpses. He casually cleared out a few nearby zombies, then walked straight down the street, slaughtering anything in his path!

...

By the time Roy had cleared one street, it was already dusk. At the end of the road stood a school.

Looking at the plaque at the school gate—Fujimi Academy—Roy recalled the plot of this world. He had just fought his way to the main characters' school.

Perfect for him. The number of zombies in the school would be relatively higher than elsewhere.

Dong! Dong! Dong!

Roy knocked on the stainless steel horizontal bar at the school gate. The clear sound echoed throughout the school grounds.

A horde of zombies slowly raised their heads and rushed over in a massive swarm, like students charging the cafeteria during lunchtime.

Roy dashed forward, entering the crowd as if it were an uninhabited area. The Muramasa Sword in his hand whistled fiercely as he frantically harvested the zombies' heads, splattering blood everywhere.

Such a massive commotion naturally attracted the attention of the surviving students hiding inside the teaching building.

"Hey, what's going on with that guy?"

The students had blocked the classroom doors with desks and chairs to fend off the zombies. Hearing the noise, they poked their heads out the windows and caught sight of Roy slaughtering the horde in the courtyard below.

Takashi Komuro and the others in the faculty office were no exception. They were stunned. The crazy smile on the young man's face seemed to declare to the hundreds of zombies: You are all surrounded by me alone!

"Is that even human?" Rei Miyamoto asked, her mouth slightly agape.

His fierce, swift movements were like a wild beast, yet he flexibly avoided all zombie attacks, cleaving through the hundreds of zombies in a frantic, bloody ballet.

"I don't know, but I don't think an ordinary human can move like that," Saeko Busujima said. As the captain of the Kendo club and a national champion, she considered her close-combat skills far superior to average people, but standing before that young man, she felt inadequate.

Saya Takagi's eyes lit up. "This is our chance! While that guy is distracting these monsters, let's quickly leave the school!"

Silence descended upon the office.

Saya Takagi noticed the strange looks the others were giving her. Displeased, she asked, "What is it?"

Saeko Busujima asked, "You want to use him as bait. What will happen to him?"

The zombie outbreak had just begun, and the survivors still held basic concepts of right and wrong. For students, the choice to save themselves at the cost of sacrificing someone else was difficult.

"So what?"

Saya Takagi defended herself. "We aren't forcing him to go. He is fighting the monsters on his own. If he dies, it's his own fault."

The others remained silent. They had planned to break out at this time anyway. The accidental appearance of someone drawing the zombies' attention was a godsend.

"Let's go!"

Saeko Busujima broke the deathly silence.

They couldn't afford to miss this opportunity. They had no choice but to accept this outcome. Takashi Komuro and Saeko Busujima took the front and rear guard positions, and the group cautiously descended the stairs, making as little noise as possible.

Because Roy had attracted the attention of most of the zombies, the group reached the parking lot without major incident. They boarded the school bus, inserting the key and starting the engine!

They weren't the only smart ones who thought of using Roy. Koichi Shido, another teacher on campus, rushed over with a few students. After sacrificing one male student to attract the zombies, they successfully boarded the bus.

"Shizuka-sensei, pick up that young man," Saeko Busujima called out near the driver's seat.

"Okay!"

Shizuka Marikawa replied. She felt a pang of guilt about using him to lure the zombies.

A blonde male student, brought by Koichi Shido, angrily shouted, "Hey, what kind of joke are you playing? Look at who we're going to save!"

Everyone followed his gaze.

The black-haired youth was like a God of Slaughter. The hundreds of zombies surrounding him could not get close, and every swing of his long sword precisely harvested a head.

Cold, brutal, and ruthless!

They had no doubt that the black-haired youth would eventually kill every zombie on campus if left unchecked.

Saeko Busujima said, "Humans have physical limits, Shizuka-sensei!"

Shizuka Marikawa nodded, gripped the steering wheel, and stomped on the accelerator. The bus shot forward like an arrow released from a bow, hitting and sending several zombies flying in front of Roy.

Saeko Busujima shouted, "Hurry up and get on!"

A flicker of surprise crossed Roy's eyes. He knew these people were using him to distract the zombies and escape, but he was genuinely surprised they came back for him. Besides, his stamina was nearly depleted.

[Zombie Kill Count: 348!]
