Chapter 13 - A Worm Of Doubt

Getting himself out of his shock, he saw Kimsung killing the last wolf before running off somewhere. Heidi was keeping watch, and it was quiet, except for the distant screams of people. Maybe that's where Kimsung went, to help those people. Keido got out from under the wolf and looked around. There were some corpses of people, some still bleeding out, and others already dead. He walked over to a man with his neck torn open, somehow clinging to life. The man was sweaty, his breathing uneven. He looked at Keido, a silent prayer, or rather a plea, begging for Keido to help him.

Keido swallowed hard and raised his sword. He knew he'd have to do this at some point, but not so early on. He tried to bring the blade down on the man's heart, but didn't; instead, kneeling beside him. Some tears ran down his face as he watched the man die slowly, in pain. He should've put the man out of his misery, but he couldn't bring himself to. He felt a hand on his shoulder and looked up to see his sister, but she was looking away from the dying man.

Keido got up after the man stopped moving, and the two walked to the American Wing to wait for Kimsung.

About an hour later, with Kimsung, who was sitting on a bench in the Greek and Roman Art section, the man was resting. He was right in his assumption, and the leader of the wolves was actually a Mid Tier Mutated wolf. Of course, he did have to kill another ten of those wolves, leaving him exhausted, but he saved at least a couple of hundred people from dying at their hands. As a reward for his troubles, he had gained another twelve EXP, bringing him almost a one-fiftieth of the way to F-rank.

Then again, this wasn't supposed to be easy, and he at least had some mana to work with. The people he saved looked around nervously, but also fearful of him.

"It's alright now. Those wolves are dead, but I wouldn't recommend leaving the building just yet. If you think this was bad, you should see the rest of the city. So just go to the American Wing, and you'll all be fine, alright?"

He spoke to them in a clear voice, so as not to startle them even more than they already were. The worst part about the First Disaster is that people were completely uncoordinated, which led to billions of casualties worldwide. Not to mention, he also wanted to dust up on his leadership skills, because he'd have to be leading people a lot later on as the years go by.

The people quickly and quietly went to the American Wing as he told them. Those native to the city, having already started heading over, were met with many corpses, some of which were being cleaned up and dragged aside by Keido and Heidi. One obvious thing about any monster is that it's attracted to easy food. Easy food meant many wanted to eat it, which meant a monster horde would soon head their way if they didn't take the bodies out of the building quickly.

Neither Keido nor Heidi wanted to do it, but if it meant keeping at least a couple of hundred other people safe, they'd have to do it. Kimsung walked to them, wiping off the last of the blood on his sword with some towels he'd taken earlier from the restrooms. He was the first to speak between them.

"Well, I managed to kill all of the wolves before too many people died, which is good. And I also noticed you're moving the bodies, good idea. The less it smells like death in here, the less monsters have ideas to make a nest here."

Keido spoke up next, a bit curious himself.

"I think I want to try out my skill now. I mean, sure, I have only a little bit of mana, but I do want to know what it does, at least."

He said, opening up his system screen. He looked through the screen, and luckily, there was something he could do with the minuscule amount of mana he had. He could summon an emotional beast! Whatever that could mean. Deciding to find out the hard way, he clicked summon on the creature, and felt energy leaving his body as a large purple worm appeared, wrapped around his arm.

The group's reaction was mixed. Keido fell silent, while Kimsung and Heidi inspected the creature.

"What the hell is that thing?"

"It looks like a worm. Kind of cute, honestly. Looks like any old worm you could find, but purple."

The worm looked around before slithering slowly around its master onto his shoulder. Keido wondered what exactly it was and looked at its own stats. Apparently, it was called Worm of Doubt, which kind of sounded cool, but also a bit weak. Kimsung decided to speak again, to ask about the weird worm.

"What's its stats, Keido?"

Keio looked up from his system to respond.

"It says.. Worm of Doubt. It can inflict doubt on opponents, making them doubt themselves or anything they might do. Wow, that's pretty cool. Not that I doubted you, since you are part of a Z-ranked skill."

He pets the worm, stroking its head slowly as their conversation moves on. The three enter the American Wing and see many people frantically talking on the phone or trying to call loved ones about what had just happened. Most, especially those whom Kimsung saved, were downtrodden, looking at their phones with tears rolling down their faces. A few were in corners, huddled together and hugging. He saw a group of children, many of them crying, as he assumed to be their chaperones, unsuccessfully trying to calm them down.

Now that Heidi thought about it, she'd be in the same situation if it weren't for the fact that she knew what was going on, as well as having Kimsung with her and Keido to do most of the heavy lifting.
