Chapter 44 - Chapter 46

We'd better not get involved in this.

Natasha signaled to Coulson with her eyes, expressing her thoughts.

Although Natasha was technically Coulson's superior, she didn't act unilaterally this time. Instead, she chose to consult with him.

This matter was far too serious—and it involved Mephisto.

Listen to all sides and you will be enlightened; listen to only one, and you will be blind. To avoid making a disastrous decision on her own, she wanted the opinion of the steady and experienced Coulson.

Hesitation filled Coulson's eyes.

Seeing that hesitation, Natasha sighed helplessly. She more or less understood what Coulson meant—they couldn't just walk away.

Lu Yi also understood what their exchanged glance meant, and a faint smile appeared on his face.

"Don't make excuses. You probably know Mephisto better than I do. Do you really think he came to Earth for no reason?" Lu Yi said, adding fuel to the fire.

Mephisto's reputation was terrible. What Lu Yi said was exactly what Coulson and Natasha were worried about. They didn't believe for a second that Mephisto didn't have some world-ending plan.

They intentionally avoided thinking about it—but Lu Yi ripped the veil right off.

Natasha's expression changed slightly. "Fine. We'll help you find the book."

"Good. Since you're willing to help me find it, I should tell you something important."

"What is it?"

"Some precautions for reading the Darkhold."

Lu Yi then explained several critical warnings about dealing with the Darkhold.

When they heard everything, Coulson and Natasha's faces turned ugly. To them, retrieving the Darkhold was a massive trap.

First, they had to resist the temptation of the book itself. Along the journey, they might encounter ghosts and creatures beyond their imagination. That alone was difficult to accept.

"Don't worry. You're helping me find the book—I won't let you fall into danger. I'll prepare some magical tools for you."

Those words gave Coulson and Natasha some confidence; their expressions eased.

"When will the magic items be ready?"

"Right now."

Lu Yi stretched out his hand, and several broken guns and armored vehicle parts floated toward him under invisible force.

Ding! Ding! Ding…

The guns and metal scraps collided, merging into a roughly spherical mass.

Then the sphere began to melt bit by bit—like ice cream under the scorching sun—becoming a sphere of cool, liquid iron that reshaped itself under Lu Yi's control.

A pitch-black sword covered in runes;a pitch-black dagger also engraved with runes;two special black necklaces;and a long chain with a small lock—all formed in front of Lu Yi.

After finishing, Lu Yi exhaled and said, "The conditions are simple. This is the only way."

What were these items for?

"The sword and dagger can kill evil beings. The black necklaces let you see evil beings—and help you destroy them. The long chain is to bind the Darkhold. I'm afraid you won't be able to resist its temptation."

"That's… very humane," Coulson couldn't help saying.

Humane? You won't say that once you learn the chain's other purpose, Lu Yi thought silently.

Coulson and Natasha didn't know the chain had another function. Once they bound the Darkhold with it, the book would be transported directly to Lu Yi's current location.

"With these magical tools, your next mission will be much easier. Just remember—don't touch anything you shouldn't."

Lu Yi wasn't entirely confident about narrative inertia, so after preparing the tools, he gave them one more warning.

"Don't worry. We're professionals."

That's exactly why I'm worried. In Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., you "professionals" analyzed everything with your "expertise" and caused disaster after disaster.

Especially that robot. Without you, she wouldn't have appeared, wouldn't have caused such chaos, and wouldn't have dragged the whole storyline out forever.

But then Lu Yi reconsidered.Once he got the Darkhold, that robot method might be a useful reference. His robot could certainly be upgraded—and he'd have more chances to create.

He didn't say any of that aloud. Instead, he encouraged the two of them, shared what he knew, and sent them off to find the Darkhold.

Coulson and Natasha left, but Lu Yi and Yuriko didn't. They remained where they were.

"Master, aren't we leaving?" Yuriko asked, sniffing the scent of blood and gunpowder.

"I still need to handle something before we go."

Though curious, Yuriko was considerate. She didn't press further, standing quietly to the side to watch.

Lu Yi didn't keep her waiting. He spread his arms, raising them gently above his shoulders, then traced a specific pattern through the air.

The motion drew in the not-yet-dried blood on the ground, causing it to flow. Guided by a special force, the pooled blood formed streams and rivers, converging at Lu Yi's feet into a massive blood-red magic circle.

Standing before the circle, Lu Yi chanted:

"With the blood of a thousand souls, I summon you—Come forth, Blood Demon!"
