Chapter 10 - 10. The Moon That Remembers You

Night fell over District Twelve like a curtain of bruised violet. The stars were faint, drowned in the glow of the city ruins — except one.

A single pale star hung directly above Rin. It pulsed softly.

Once.

Twice.

Like a heartbeat.

Rin stared up at it from the rooftop, unable to look away.

Rin (muttering):

"What do you want from me…?"

Footsteps approached.

Nahara:

"You staring holes into the sky again?"

Rin barely responded. That star wasn't normal — he could feel it watching him.

And then—

The star pulsed a third time.

The wind stilled.

The air cooled.

Shadows lengthened unnaturally.

Nahara's scales flickered a deep violet-blue.

Nahara:

"…Rin? Something's wrong."

Before she could take another step—

A voice echoed from behind them.

Rokuro:

"…It has begun."

The rooftop trembled.

Elion ran up the stairs, light still flickering from the confrontation earlier.

Elion:

"Guys! That star—Solari tracking arrays are freaking out! They're calling it an intrusion from—"

He stopped mid-sentence.

Because the star wasn't a star anymore.

It was opening.

Splitting into a vertical line of silver light.

And something began to descend.

Nahara grabbed Rin's arm.

Nahara:

"What is that?!"

Rokuro's expression grew grim. Deeper than grim. Ancient.

Rokuro:

"A memory that refuses to die."

Rin's heart pounded.

Rin:

"…Is it coming for me?"

Rokuro didn't answer in words.

He nodded.

Silver light struck the rooftop.

Dust swirled outward.

The others shielded their eyes.

When the light faded…

A figure stood in the center.

A woman.

Tall. Moon-pale skin.

Eyes made of white fire.

Hair flowing as if underwater.

She wore armor woven entirely from shimmering shadow-silk.

Nahara stepped back instinctively.

Elion's aura flared in panic.

Rin felt his breath leave him.

Because this woman—

this impossible presence—

looked at him like she already knew him.

???:

"Found you."

Rin's voice broke.

Rin:

"…Who… who are you?"

The woman smiled in a sad, terrible way.

And the words she spoke shattered the entire rooftop's silence.

???:

"I am Lunae.

The one who carried you from the Moonfall Ruins.

The one who erased your name to hide you.

The one who loved you before you ever breathed."

She stepped closer.

Lunae:

"Rin… I am your mother."

Rin froze.

His chest tightened painfully, like his heart forgot how to beat.

Nahara gasped.

Elion's jaw dropped.

Rokuro closed his eyes.

He had known.

He had always known.

Rin staggered backward.

Rin:

"N-No. No… my mother—she died. She died in the slums. I was there. I—"

Lunae approached slowly, her voice gentle but unearthly.

Lunae:

"The woman who raised you was kind. But she was not your blood."

Rin shook his head violently.

Rin:

"Stop. Stop lying—"

But Lunae lifted her hand.

A ripple of silver moonlight washed over the rooftop—

and Rin's memories began to distort, reshape, and unlock.

Suddenly he saw—

a cradle woven from lunar branches,

a white palace bathed in shadow,

a war of silver flames.

Then a voice:

"Hide him. Seal him. They must never know."

Rin collapsed to his knees, grabbing his head.

Rin:

"STOP!"

Nahara rushed to him, holding his shoulders.

Nahara:

"Rin—breathe! Look at me!"

But Lunae's eyes softened with sorrow.

Lunae:

"Your bloodline is the reason the Moonfall War ever began."

Rin's breath caught.

Elion raised both hands, sunlight gathering instinctively.

This woman's presence felt like pressure on his ribs — ancient, crushing.

Elion:

"Stay back! Get away from him!"

He unleashed Solar Bloom, petals exploding outward.

But the petals stopped mid-air.

Frozen.

Turned to silver dust.

And gently drifted down.

Elion stared, horrified.

Lunae regarded him with calm interest.

Lunae:

"A Dawn-bearer with a merciful core.

Rare.

Fragile.

Precious."

Her eyes softened.

Lunae:

"Your light is growing, child. Let it."

Silver sparks leapt from her fingers—

and Elion's solar aura flickered violently, then expanded.

He staggered.

Elion:

"What—what did you—?!"

His power was evolving rapidly, shifting from soft gold to something hotter, sharper… but still gentle.

Lunae smiled faintly.

Lunae:

"The Solari suppress emotions.

I liberated yours."

Nahara stepped between Rin and Lunae, teeth gritted.

Nahara:

"Mother or not — you're scaring him. Back off!"

Her wrist sigils ignited in dark blue fire.

For the first time ever, they didn't just glow—

They formed shapes.

Symbols.

Ancient runes.

Lunae looked at them and went still.

Lunae:

"…Abyssal sigils.

I haven't seen those since—"

She stepped closer, eyes widening slightly.

Lunae:

"Child…

do you know what you carry in your blood?"

Nahara's breath shook.

Nahara:

"No.

But I'm done running from it."

Her markings blazed brighter.

The air twisted.

Rokuro stepped between Lunae and the teens for the first time ever.

No smile.

No cryptic jokes.

Just raw seriousness.

Rokuro:

"Lunae.

You broke your vow."

She looked at him with old grief.

Lunae:

"I had to. The Seal on Rin is failing."

Rin's heart dropped.

Rin:

"…What seal?"

Rokuro looked him in the eyes.

Rokuro:

"The one that keeps your true form asleep."

Silver lightning cracked across the sky.

Lunae Reveals Everything

Lunae kneeled beside Rin, her voice trembling.

Lunae:

"Listen to me, Rin."

He didn't move.

She placed a hand over his chest.

Lunae:

"Inside you is a fragment of the Moonheart Core — the power that once ruled both night and day.

Your existence threatened Solari and Sōryun alike.

So I sealed it. And hid you among mortals."

Rin's eyes widened.

Rin:

"So the war…

the Moonfall War…"

Lunae:

"…started because you were born."

Nahara gasped.

Elion's light dimmed in horror.

Rin felt sick.

Rin:

"I… caused a war?"

Lunae shook her head violently.

Lunae:

"No.

Your birth offered hope.

Others chose war."

She cupped his face gently.

Lunae:

"I did everything to keep you alive.

Even letting you think I died."

A tear—silver like mercury—rolled down her cheek.

Rin's voice cracked.

Rin:

"…Why come now?"

Lunae's expression darkened.

Lunae:

"Because the Core inside you is awakening…

and something ancient has begun hunting you."

The air temperature dropped instantly.

A howl echoed across the district — not from sky or ground, but from every shadow at once.

Rokuro's eyes sharpened.

Rokuro:

"It found us."

The shadows twisted, crawling toward the rooftop.

Lunae stood tall, her armor flashing silver.

Lunae:

"Rin. Stay behind me."

Rin stood shakily.

Then stepped forward.

Rin:

"No.

If something's hunting me…

I'm done hiding."

His aura ignited — crimson and midnight blue.

The shadows recoiled.
