Chapter 1 - CHAPTER ONE – You really don't remember?

"Nurse Joanne, your presence is urgently needed at the emergency ward... There was an accident and we need all the help we could get" ..And with that, the call was ended abruptly. Joanne's brows furrowed as she made to leave her station. It hadn't been up to a five minutes since her shift was declared over and now, this again. She let out a sigh and rushed to get into the elevator, leading her straight to the emergency ward. "You're here! Doctor Noah is in there attending to a patient" Nurse Vicki said and with a kidney tray in hand, she headed out.

Joanne pushed open the door and hurriedly got in. "Nurse Jo, you're finally here. Pass me the IV bag over there" Noah said and Joanne was fast on her feet... When they'd stabilized the condition of the patient, Joanne let out a sigh of relief and left the ward with Noah behind her. "Thank you for today Jo" he said and she quickly shook her head turbo to face him. "It's my duty.. You don't have to thank me" Jo replied. "But your shift was long over and not many nurses would actually do what you did" Noah countered and Jo smiled without replying.

....

"Mr. Bade, we've done our best and your son is already in stable condition. He's been moved to a regular ward and he's still undergoing treatment. Be rest assured that by lastest this evening, he would've regained consciousness". "Thank you doctor Noah" Mrs. Bade said with teary eyes. The accident earlier had been a fatal head on collision but thankfully, the hospital was just a few blocks ahead and the victims had been brought in on time. The cars involved had been a cab and a personal vehicle with a total of 5 victims. Three from the cab and two from the other. Unfortunately, the cab's driver lost his life on the spot and his family was immediately contacted..

Joanne's eyes scanned the couple and she couldn't help but feel a sherd of pity for them. She let out a small sigh and headed back to her station. ' Guess she wasn't having any rest after all'. She picked up her phone which laid on the desk and on turning it on, she wasn't surprised to see 15 missed calls and 6 texts from Olivia. Olivia had been a close friend of hers since highschool and unlike most of her other friends, they'd managed to be in contact till date. She quickly called back and on the second ring, Olivia answered. "Where da hell were you?! Didn't you see my calls or my texts? By the way, why haven't I seen you?.. Wait, don't tell me you can't make it..." Olivia trailed.

"Which question do I answer first?" Joanne said teasingly and Olivia sneered, "You better start talking!!". "Alright, alright. Calm down, will you?". "Well as you know, my shift was supposed to be long over but there was an accident so I had to stay back and help out. I'm really sorry..I didn't mean to stand you off. Don't worry, I'll make it up to you. Next time we're heading out, all bills will be on me" Joanne said. "Duh.. who do you think would pay the bills?" Olivia asked cockily and Joanne laughed. "I gotta get off the phone now. I haven't gotten off work so I guess we'll catch up later" Joanne said and Olivia let out a sigh before saying, "Alright.. Take care and make sure you don't skip meals...I mean it". "Yes ma'am. Love you". "Hate you more.. Now run along" Olivia said and hung up, leaving Joanne smiling.

...

"Joanne!!" a man's deep baritone voice called out and Joanne who was about entering the elevator with her bag in hand, turned around. "It really is you! Long time, no see" ha said and her brows furrowed even more. "Sorry..I can't seem to recall meeting you. Do you mind introducing yourself?"Joanne said politely, brows deeply furrowed. " So..you really don't remember me?". " I don't". "It's Terry. Luo High. Same class"he introduced and realisation hit Joanne. "Terry! It really is you. I guess puberty really favoured you. You've gotten all tall and good looking"Joanne joked and Terry laughed.

"You work here?" Terry asked. "Yup, I do. My shift just ended and I don't think this is a nice place for a conversation. Why don't you give me your contact and we'll catch up some other time?" Joanne suggested and he obliged. They exchanged contacts and after a few casual teases, they headed they're separate ways.

By the time Joanne got home, it was already 8pm. She changed into her slippers and tossed her bag on her bed, bringing out it's contents and sorting them out. When she was done, she entered the bathroom, took a long refreshing shower and headed straight to the kitchen to get a glass of warm milk. Feeling drowsy, she skipped dinner and headed straight for bed, dozing off almost immediately.
