Chapter 128 - The Format Command

The violet nebula didn't flicker this time. It began to turn White. Not the white of light, but the white of an empty page.

Inside Kenji's mind, the silver aurora of System-Kenji began to display a progress bar that spanned the entire horizon of his consciousness.

[SYSTEM STATUS: FORMATTING C:\OMEGA_SECTOR]

[PROGRESS: 0.01%]

[WARNING: ALL DATA (SOULS, WORLDS, MEMORIES) WILL BE PERMANENTLY ERASED]

"Kenji! The floor is disappearing!" Mateo yelled.

He wasn't exaggerating. The deck of the Archive was becoming transparent. Down in the "Neighborhoods," the people of Aurelia looked up as their amber sun began to dissolve into white pixels. This wasn't a battle they could win with swords or magic. You can't fight the hand that is unplugging the machine.

"They're formatting the 'Source-Drive'," Kenji whispered. He could feel his own legs starting to lose their "Definition." The "Format Command" was coming from the Great Archive's core, and because Kenji had used their "Hardware" to build his world, he was still subject to their "Root Commands."

[NOTICE: THE 'LIVING MULTIVERSE' IS BEING INITIALIZED FOR WIPE]

"We have to 'Un-mount'," Kenji said, his voice echoing through every world.

"Un-mount?" Elara asked, her frost-mana failing to freeze the encroaching whiteness. "We're inside you, Kenji! Where do we go if we leave the drive?"

"We don't leave the drive," Kenji said, his silver eyes flashing with a desperate, industrial fire. "We Change the File-System."

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE BOOTLEG_PARTITION]

Kenji grabbed his Rusted Hammer. He didn't strike out at the whiteness. He struck Inward, hitting his own chest the center of the "Source-Drive."

He wasn't trying to damage himself. He was trying to create a "Ghost Partition." In the Gutter, when the Firm used to come to repossess "Licensed Hardware," the smiths would hide the best parts in "Dead Space" sectors of the hard drive that were marked as "Damaged" so the scanners would skip them.

"I'm going to mark the entire multiverse as 'Corrupt Sectors'!" Kenji roared.

[SKILL ACTIVATED: THE SCAR_TISSUE_PROTOCOL]

Kenji used the "Firewall" (the Prototype-Alpha's code) and the "Toxic Asset" status he had just earned. He began to wrap every world, every soul, and every "Marble" in a layer of "Digital Scar Tissue."

He made the multiverse look so "Broken," so "Glitchy," and so "Un-readable" that the Format Command couldn't find the "Files" to delete them.

[NOTICE: FORMATTING ERROR]

[REASON: DRIVE_IS_UNREADABLE_OR_PHYSICALLY_DAMAGED]

[ACTION: RETRYING... RETRYING...]

The whiteness stopped advancing. The progress bar at the horizon stalled at 1.04%.

"It's working!" Mateo cheered, though the ship was still flickering like a bad hologram. "The Great Archive thinks we're a 'Dead Drive'!"

"It's not enough," Kenji grunted, blood thick, black "Source-Oil" leaking from his eyes. "They'll just 'Low-Level Format.' They'll send a physical pulse to melt the hardware if the software wipe fails. We need to Disconnect entirely."

"YOU CANNOT DISCONNECT," a voice boomed from the whiteness the collective voice of the Great Archive. "YOU ARE BUILT ON OUR BRASS. YOU ARE COOLED BY OUR VOID. YOU ARE OURS."

"I was built on your brass," Kenji said, his hands glowing with the heat of a billion suns. "But I was forged in the Gutter."

[FINAL SKILL INITIATED: THE HARDWARE_SEVER]

Kenji didn't use the Omega-Engine's power. He used the "Labor-Energy" of every person in the Unranked Alliance. He asked everyone to "Push" against the reality they lived in.

He used the Rusted Hammer to strike the "Connection Point" between his soul and the Great Archive. He was literally "Cutting the Cord."

CRACK.

The sound was louder than a universe dying. The "White Page" shattered. The Archive was thrown into a "True Void" a place where there were no rules, no Great Archive, and no "Format Commands."

[STATUS: DRIVE_DISCONNECTED]

[MODE: STANDALONE_REALITY]

Kenji collapsed. The progress bar vanished. The amber sun of Aurelia returned, brighter than ever. But the "Source-Drive" was no longer plugged into the "Universal Library."

They were drifting. They were free. And they were completely alone in the dark.

"We did it," Priya whispered, looking out at a sky that was now a deep, endless indigo. "We're off the grid."

Kenji looked at his hammer. It was broken. The head had snapped off, leaving only the handle and a fragment of rusted iron.

"We're off the grid," Kenji rasped, looking at his scarred hands. "But we just became the only 'Live Drive' in a graveyard of 'Deleted' worlds. We're going to have to learn how to walk without a floor."
