Chapter 1 - Rain, Encounters, and Eggman's Return

---

Rain poured over Central City like a curtain, silver sheets blurring neon lights and puddling in uneven sidewalks. The streets, once buzzing with life, were now hushed-save for the rhythmic pattering of rain and the occasional distant boom of thunder.

Amy Rose adjusted the groceries in her arms, clutching the bag tighter as she stood beneath the flickering sign of a convenience store. Her quills stuck to her cheeks, her dress soaked, but she didn't move. She'd waited in worse weather.

Sonic had said he'd drop by today. Something casual, he claimed. Movie night, maybe chili dogs. But she should've known better than to pin her hopes on the wind.

["He's late again. Or maybe he changed his mind... Like always."]

"Standing there makes you look like a statue."

Amy turned sharply at the deep, quiet voice. Her heart skipped a beat.

Shadow the Hedgehog stood across the street, his body barely visible through the curtain of rain. His red stripes glinted faintly, and his arms were crossed, eyes trained on her with quiet scrutiny.

"I didn't expect to see you here," Amy said, surprised.

"I was tracking an anomaly," he replied, stepping into the light. "Energy spike not far from here. Turned out to be nothing."

"Nothing?" She tilted her head. "You sure it's not just a weird weather thing?"

Shadow shook his head slowly. "No. Something's off tonight."

Amy blinked. "Well... if you're not in a hurry to disappear again, want to come inside? You look soaked."

Shadow hesitated.

Then, without a word, he walked beside her into the convenience store's small café section.

---

They sat at a booth near the back. Amy cupped a steaming mug of cocoa between her hands, savoring the warmth. Shadow didn't order anything. He sat across from her, arms folded, his gaze constantly shifting between the windows and the hallway behind the counter.

"You're acting twitchier than usual," Amy said softly, trying to ease the tension.

"Instinct," he muttered. "Something's coming."

Before she could respond, a tremor rocked the café. Cups clattered. The lights flickered.

The entire block went dark.

---

Amy shot up. "What the-?"

Outside, the street erupted in orange light as a nearby building exploded. Glass shattered inward, and a second boom echoed in the distance.

A sickly green robot hovered into view, accompanied by a familiar, irritating laugh.

"Ho ho ho! I've missed this city," came the unmistakable voice of Dr. Eggman through the robot's speakers. "Did you all think I was gone?"

Amy's eyes widened. "Eggman?!"

Shadow's hand went instantly to his communicator. "He's using a distortion signal. That's what I picked up."

The robot turned its sensor-eye toward the café. Amy felt a chill run through her spine as the glass cracked further.

Target: Amy Rose.

Priority Level: High.

Order: Capture.

Shadow was already moving.

"Down!" he barked, grabbing Amy and diving behind the counter just as a beam of plasma tore through their table.

The explosion that followed flung shelves against the walls. Amy winced, clutching her ears.

"Why is he targeting me?" she shouted.

"I don't know," Shadow growled. "But we're not staying here to find out."

---

Outside, chaos spread through the street. More Eggman bots flooded in from the alleys, scanning with glowing red eyes.

Shadow led Amy through a back exit into the rain. They darted into the alleyway, only for another bot to crash into the concrete in front of them.

Amy summoned her hammer. "I can fight-!"

"Stay behind me," Shadow commanded, stepping forward.

He moved like lightning, teleporting with Chaos Control and obliterating the bot with a single strike. It exploded into shrapnel, lighting up the rain-soaked alley with sparks.

Amy stared, breathless.

["He's... powerful. Different from Sonic. Precise."]

They made it two blocks before another wave of drones descended from the rooftops.

"Shadow!" Amy pointed. "There's too many-"

"I'll hold them off. Go."

She didn't move. "No! I'm not leaving you-"

"I can handle it."

"You're bleeding!"

A cut trailed down his arm, crimson mixing with the rain. Shadow didn't even look at it.

"Trust me," he said, eyes locked with hers. "Run."

---

Meanwhile, on the far side of town, Sonic the Hedgehog zipped down the avenue, stopping short as smoke rose from the center of the city.

"What the...? An explosion?"

He bolted forward, wind trailing behind him. Within moments, he found the wreckage of the café-now a charred ruin. People were being evacuated. Police drones hovered. Sonic's expression darkened.

Then he spotted a robot fragment bearing Eggman's logo.

His fists clenched. "Eggman's back?"

Then something else caught his eye.

Amy's bag of groceries, lying abandoned on the ground.

His heart dropped. He looked up, eyes narrowing.

And then he saw them-Shadow and Amy, racing across rooftops in the distance. Amy clutched her hammer. Shadow was bleeding but still running.

Together.

Sonic stood in the rain, motionless.

["She's with... him?"]

He didn't like that. Not one bit.

---

Shadow and Amy finally reached the edge of the city. The pursuit had slowed, the last wave of bots retreating as quickly as they came.

Amy collapsed to her knees, panting. "Why... me?"

Shadow looked around, scanning the area. "He's planning something. Eggman doesn't target at random."

"And you think I'm part of it?"

Shadow paused. "...I don't know. But I'll find out."

She looked up at him. Despite the cuts and the blood, he stood tall. Strong. Steady.

"Thank you," she whispered.

Shadow looked down at her, his expression unreadable. But something in his eyes softened-just a flicker.

"You did well," he said quietly.

Amy flushed. "Coming from you, that's practically poetry."

To her surprise, he smirked-just a little.

---

Far above the city, aboard a floating ship cloaked in clouds, Dr. Eggman twirled in his chair.

"Amy Rose, eh?" he mused, looking at the scan data. "I wonder if you're the key..."

A strange, glowing gem sat in a container beside him-purple, pulsing.

He tapped it thoughtfully.

"Let's see how strong your friends really are."
