Chapter 5 - Chapter 5 The Observation Arena

The Observation Arena stood at the far end of Reikosha Academy, partially carved into the side of a massive stone ridge. Its wide circular platform was surrounded by tiered seating where students usually gathered to watch advanced demonstrations.

Tall pillars marked with glowing runes ringed the arena floor, faintly humming with protective energy.

Kairo had only seen the arena once before from a distance.

Up close, it felt much larger… and heavier.

Students filled the seats quickly, whispering among themselves as they tried to guess what was happening.

First-years crowded together nervously, while some second-years leaned against the stone rails with curiosity.

Kairo, Kimimaru, Yura, and Tyouro found a spot halfway up the stands.

"What do you think this is about?" Kairo asked quietly.

Tyouro shrugged. "No idea. But if Takahano called everyone here, it must be serious."

Yura remained silent, her eyes focused on the arena floor.

A moment later, Professor Takahano stepped into the center of the platform. His long coat swayed slightly as the wind passed through the open structure. The murmuring of the students slowly died down.

"When energy is misunderstood," Takahano began, his voice carrying clearly through the arena, "it becomes dangerous."

He turned slightly, gesturing toward the far gate.

Two academy instructors stepped forward, escorting a student between them.

The boy looked pale, sweat running down his face.

Kairo recognized him immediately.

It was the same student who had mocked him that morning.

The crowd shifted with interest.

"Earlier today," Takahano continued, "this student attempted to manipulate Yami energy without proper control."

Dark flickers crackled weakly around the boy's arms.

Yami energy.

Even in its unstable state, the darkness seemed heavier than normal power.

"It spiraled out of control," Takahano said calmly. "Fortunately, the instructors intervened before serious damage occurred."

The student clenched his fists, clearly embarrassed by the attention.

Takahano faced the audience again.

"This demonstration is not meant to shame him."

He paused.

"It is meant to teach you."

One of the instructors stepped back, releasing the student.

"Show them," Takahano said.

The boy hesitated… then lifted his hands.

Black energy slowly crawled across his arms like living smoke.

A few students gasped.

Yami energy was not like Reikou.

Reikou felt alive, like a pulse.

Yami felt cold.

Hungry.

The boy forced the energy outward, forming a small swirling mass above his palm.

For a second it held steady.

Then it twitched violently.

The darkness began expanding, unstable and aggressive.

The student's breathing quickened.

"I—I can control it—"

Suddenly the energy surged.

The dark sphere burst outward, cracking like shattered glass.

Gasps echoed through the arena.

But before the energy could spread, the runes on the surrounding pillars flared bright blue.

A barrier snapped into place.

The unstable Yami energy slammed into it and dissipated instantly.

Silence followed.

The student dropped to his knees, breathing heavily.

Takahano walked over and placed a hand on his shoulder.

"This," he said calmly, "is what happens when power exceeds understanding."

He helped the boy to his feet.

"Energy is not a weapon you simply pick up."

He turned to face the arena again.

"It is something you must learn to live with."

Kairo watched quietly, his stomach tightening.

If even a small amount of Yami energy could do that…

How strong were the advanced users?

Takahano raised his hand, and the arena lights dimmed slightly.

"Now," he said, "I will show you the difference between uncontrolled energy…"

A faint golden glow began forming around his palm.

"…and mastery."

The glow brightened until it shimmered like liquid sunlight.

Hikari energy.

The warm light spread gently across the arena floor, calm and steady.

No instability.

No resistance.

Just pure control.

Students leaned forward in awe.

Kairo felt the vibration again.

But this time it wasn't unsettling.

It felt… balanced.

Takahano closed his hand, and the light vanished instantly.

"This is why you train," he said.

"To understand."

"To control."

"And to protect."

The crowd remained silent.

Even the wind seemed to hold its breath.

Then Takahano's gaze swept across the stands… and briefly stopped on Kairo.

Just for a second.

But it was enough to make Kairo sit up straighter.

"Classes are dismissed for today," the professor said finally. "Reflect on what you've seen."

Students slowly began standing, conversations buzzing again.

Tyouro let out a breath. "Okay… that was intense."

Kimimaru nodded slightly.

"Control," he said quietly. "That's the real difference between fighters."

Yura stood up.

"The exam is in two days."

She looked at Kairo.

"You should practice tonight."

Kairo nodded.

He planned to.

But as the four of them left the arena, Kairo couldn't shake the strange feeling in his chest.

That faint vibration again.

Only now…

It felt like something was waking up.
