Soon enough, it kept coming.
Nearer now, the bunker occasionally spewing tongues of fire, edging ever closer to us...
By this time, it was already midnight, the gunfire on the mountain, though audible, was sporadic at best; the forest once again returned to silence.
Wang Wenxi and I lay in a ditch not far from the bunker, awaiting the signal.
Wang Wenxi, he's quite the chatterbox!
A big chatterbox!
After my words and actions were approved by him that day, he just let himself go.
He looked at the moonlit night, chuckled, and then quietly asked me:
"Guidance Officer, tell me, what would you be thinking about at a time like this?"
"Me? What could I be thinking about?"
Out of the blue, he blurted out: "Aren't you thinking about your wife?"
"In times like this, who could be thinking about her?"
"Ah, in times like this, it's exactly when you need to relax. Trust me. But seriously, is your wife pretty? She must be very graceful."
"She's alright, she's alright..."
