Jason Wu didn't fall.
He was pulled.
Like fingers made of gravity latched onto his ribs and yanked him through a door that didn't exist. Light warped into spirals of gold and black, folding inward and outward at the same time. His body stretched, compressed, dissolved, and reassembled in rapid flashes—like he was flipping between versions of himself that never lived.
Longwu Sword pulsed against his palm.
["Relax, boy. If you panic here, the space will eat you, digest you, then complain about the taste."]
Jason's voice cracked. "I—AM—TRYING—to relax!"
The pull intensified.
Darkness blinked.Light twisted.Sound inverted.
Then—
Jason was thrown into a new world.
CRASH!
He slammed into stone, skidded across ancient dust, and tumbled to a stop against a broken pillar.
"Ow… stars…" Jason groaned. "I think my soul hit the ground before my body did."
Longwu clinked.
["Congratulations. You have successfully entered: absolutely nowhere."]
THE REALM OF ECHOES AND RUIN
Jason pushed himself off the cracked floor and looked around.
The place wasn't like any realm he had ever seen.
Broken structures floated weightlessly, pieces drifting like ruins caught in a dream's tide. Faint silhouettes of people flickered between the debris—transparent, incomplete, like memories refusing to die. A shattered celestial staircase twisted endlessly into the void. Fragments of ancient battle cries whispered through the cracked air.
"Longwu…" Jason whispered. "What is this place?"
Longwu hummed low, uneasy.
["This… is the Fracture of the Fallen."]
Jason blinked. "That sounds friendly."
["It is not."]
Jason waited.
Longwu added nothing.
"...Can you elaborate?"
["…No."]
"WHAT DO YOU MEAN NO?!"
["It's complicated. And depressing. And I'm allergic to explaining cosmic tragedies before lunch."]
Jason pinched the bridge of his nose."Perfect. Fantastic. Lovely."
A distant impact shuddered through the realm, like a drumbeat echoing through a corpse.
Jason jerked his head up."…What was that?"
Longwu went silent—unnaturally silent.
Jason tightened his grip on the sword.
"Longwu?"
Still nothing.
"…Why are you quiet?"
["…Because what's approaching does not belong here."]
Jason stiffened."Is it the Hunter?"
["Worse."]
"WORSE than the unkillable robot assassin with the charisma of an office printer?!"
["…You'll see."]
Jason paled.
THE FIRST ECHO
A ripple passed through the air.
Then another.
Then—
A figure stepped out of the broken mist.
Jason's heart plunged into his stomach.
It was… him.
Older.Armored in cracked black-gold plates.Hair longer, streaked with silver.Eyes burning like dying suns.A scar running down one cheek. His aura felt like molten gravity and regret.
Jason froze.
"…Oh come on… not this again—"
Longwu whispered sharply.
["No. This isn't a future echo. This is an echo of someone who fell."]
Jason blinked.
"…Fell where?"
The older Jason stared at him with hollow intensity.
Longwu muttered,
["…He fell into despair. Into erasure. Into forgetting everything except the need to kill what caused his ruin."]
Jason swallowed.
"So this is… a version of me that failed?"
The echo's cracked voice rasped:
"…You should not have come here."
Jason's skin crawled.
His own voice—but dead inside.
He stammered, "…Listen, mister me—sir me—older me—uh—backup me—"
Longwu hissed.
["Stop talking."]
Jason lowered his voice. "Okay, yeah, good idea."
The echo Jason took a step closer.
The ground bent beneath his footfall.
Jason whispered, "Why is he looking at me like I borrowed money and never paid it back?"
Longwu's tone sharpened.
["Because to him, you're the anomaly that ruined everything."]
Jason's heart pounded.
"…What did I do?"
The echo's voice reverted to a whisper made of broken chords.
"…You refused the role."
Jason frowned. "What role?"
"…The one that would have saved us all."
Jason inhaled sharply. "Okay—look—I don't even know what role you're talking about—"
The echo blurred—
And appeared right in front of him.
Jason yelped and rolled aside as a blade of broken golden light split the ground where he stood.
The shockwave hurled debris into the air.
"HEY—HEY—STOP TRYING TO KILL ME! WE BASICALLY SHARE DNA!"
"Exactly."The echo lifted its blade again."Which means I alone can end you."
Jason's eyes widened."I HATE TIME TRAVEL!"
THE BATTLE AGAINST HIMSELF
The echo moved with a terrifying mixture of Jason's instincts and something older—like a martial god wearing Jason's skin.
Jason dodged a sweeping strike, his boots skidding over floating debris.
"Longwu! Suggestions!"
["Yes: don't die!"]
"USEFUL BUT NOT SPECIFIC!"
["Fine: hit him first!"]
"I'M TRYING!"
Jason leapt onto a drifting fragment of stairway and shot forward. He slashed with Longwu—
But the echo parried effortlessly.
CLANG—!!
The backlash launched Jason backwards.
He flipped midair and landed on a half-floating platform.
The echo tilted its head.
"…Too weak."
Jason growled, "Says the bootleg version of me with extra misery downloaded."
The echo's eyes flickered.
"…Misery was all that remained."
Jason blinked.His chest tightened.
"…What happened to you?"
The echo slowly raised his blade.
"…The same thing that will happen to you."
"And what is that?!"
The echo answered without blinking:
"…You will choose wrong."
Jason's breath caught.
The echo charged again.
Jason met him midair.
Longwu screamed with metallic fury as their blades collided.
Sparks showered like falling stars.
Jason gritted his teeth. "I'm not you! Whoever broke you—I'll break them back!"
The echo snarled.
"…You will fail."
"No I won't!"
"…You always fail."
Jason kicked off the echo's torso and flipped backward.
"I NEVER FAIL—"
Longwu coughed.
["That's a lie."]
Jason screamed, "CAN YOU NOT RIGHT NOW?!"
THE FRACTURE RESPONDS
As the two clashed, the realm itself shuddered.
Ruins floated faster.Structures rotated violently.Echo voices wept and roared.
Jason landed on a cracked altar, panting.
The echo stalked toward him.
"…The anomaly brought you here."
Jason frowned. "Anomaly?"
"…Your existence."
Jason opened his mouth—But the realm cut him off.
The ground beneath him split open.
Light shot upward like a spear.
Longwu rasped:
["Jason—move!"]
Jason jumped aside—
Just as an enormous circular sigil ignited across the battlefield.
Ancient.Forbidden.Screaming with voices of the dead.
Jason's eyes widened.
"What in the nine sect laundry schedules is THAT?!"
Longwu stiffened.
["…The Fracture's judgment."]
Jason swallowed.
"…Judgment for WHAT?"
["…Intruders."]
Jason pointed at the echo.
"BUT HE'S THE INTRUDER! HE'S NOT EVEN ME ANYMORE!"
The echo stepped into the glowing sigil.
His aura exploded with cracked golden fury.
Jason whispered, "Oh that's unfair—"
Longwu cut him off.
["RUN."]
Jason ran.
THE SHATTERING MOMENT
The echo unleashed a strike that tore the sigil apart, splitting it into a storm of shattered light.
Jason dove behind a floating pillar—
Too slow.
The shockwave hit him like a cosmic battering ram.
BOOOO—OM!!!
Jason was launched through multiple ruins, tumbling violently before slamming into a suspended monolith.
He coughed blood.
"Okay… okay… I think my soul has a concussion…"
Longwu buzzed urgently.
["Jason! He's powering up. We need to leave before the realm seals us in."]
Jason wiped blood from his lip.
"I'm not running."
["…You always say that before running."]
"I MEAN IT THIS TIME!"
["Oh stars help us."]
Jason stood—legs trembling, lungs burning, but eyes blazing with stubborn defiance.
The echo stood in the center of the cracking sigil, aura boiling like a dying star.
Jason pointed Longwu at him.
"No matter what you are… no matter what happened to you… I'm not letting you decide my fate."
The echo whispered:
"…Then prove it."
THE FRACTURE OPENS A PATH
Just as they prepared for one final clash—
The sigil beneath the echo imploded.
Light exploded upward—
Then downward—
Then vanished.
Leaving behind a swirling aperture of golden-black mist.
Jason blinked.
"…Did the realm just open a door?"
Longwu's tone dropped.
["…It's not a door."]
"Then what is it?"
["…A test."]
The echo stepped backward into the swirling mist.
Before disappearing entirely, he whispered:
"…If you follow… you will learn why we all fell."
Jason's heart thundered.
"…Longwu?"
["…If we go in, we might not come back."]
Jason swallowed.
"Would the Hunter follow?"
["…No. He cannot enter the Fracture core."]
Jason inhaled sharply.
"Then we're going."
["…Of course we are. You're insane."]
Jason tightened his grip.
He leapt into the mist.
