Ren stopped breathing. Her soul practically left her body.
She braced herself for the apocalypse.
She squeezed her eyes shut, fully expecting the worst things imaginable to happen in the next three seconds. She expected Kael to roar so loudly it would shatter her eardrums. She expected him to lunge, claws extended and rip Altair's head right off his body.
She anticipated blood splashing across the freshly cleaned wooden floorboards, the tree somehow catching on fire from sheer testosterone-fueled rage, and herself having to jump out of the hut tonight just to survive the crossfire.
She waited for the sickening crunch of bones.
"Very well," Kael said solemnly.
Ren's eyes snapped open. Her jaw unhinged, dropping so fast it practically hit the floorboards.
'Excuse me?' Ren's brain blue-screened.
Kael didn't attack. He didn't roar. Instead, the massive White Tiger beastman gave Altair a respectful, understanding nod.
