Sophie released my hands after a while, letting the warmth between us dissolve back into air. She didn't let her attention waver, though. Instead, her fingers busied themselves inside her bag, rustling fabric and shifting items as if she were performing some grand, secret ritual.
"Ta da!" she exclaimed suddenly, her voice bright and triumphant.
I blinked, taken off guard. "You brought snacks?"
Her grin stretched impossibly wide. With a flourish that made it seem like she was pulling a rabbit from a hat rather than rummaging through a bag, she revealed the bounty: chips in a crinkling packet, chocolate bars that gleamed under the light, and two ridiculous-looking canned drinks that practically begged to be mocked.
"I come prepared," she declared proudly, as if she had just solved the world's problems.
