The sound echoed through the house long after Melissa stormed out, her heels striking the floor with a sharp, furious rhythm until everything fell silent.
I stood frozen in the middle of the living room.

My hands were trembling slightly. I slowly lowered myself onto the couch, staring at the door as if she might burst back in and say it was all some terrible joke.

I swallowed hard.
