Ch 0: Prologue - First Born

14 years ago, a beautiful baby girl was born in Javerstone, the main city of the Kingdom of the South. Her brother, a 7-year-old boy named Xander, sat by his father in the living room of the apartment complex under their name, waiting for the call... the call to come and bring the new member of their small family home.

Xander played with his toys, watching his father on the phone, eager to meet his new baby sister, oblivious to the horrors in the near future that would not only change his life but also haunt him ever after.

He asked his father all the questions that came to mind. "Father, why can some people do what others can't?" His father's reply was simple but enlightening: "There are two types of humans; the first live as simple creatures, while the second are faster, stronger, and each has a power deep within them that lets them do the amazing things they do. We don't really know why or how, but we do know that this is our simple fate."

Xander slowly gets up as his father comes and holds his hand, guiding him outside to their car for a slow journey to the hospital. Inside, his mother waits.

Outside the hospital room, Xander and his father now stand, his mother's soft voice from inside the room, a violent scream as his sister enters this world, then silence. A nurse walks out with a small smile, bows, and says, "Congratulations, Mister Kortez, your wife is waiting for you."

He was gone; before Xander's eyes, his dad had vanished into the room in a violent sprint, and Xander followed, locking his eyes on where his mother lay tired, a small creature wrapped in a blanket in her arms. For nine months, Xander had been excited; he couldn't wait to have someone new to play with, share his toys. Even better was that the doctor had told Xander's parents that their daughter to come would be born with her powers instead of unlocking them at the age of eight, but instead of jealousy, Xander was excited and proud he was related to someone so special.

He climbed onto his mother's hospital bed and hugged her as he glanced into the bundle on her lap, a small lump of hairless flesh in the shape of a tiny human.

A week later a letter had come in the mail, "Analysis: Amber" written in bold letters across the envelope. Inside was a document that stated her power.

Partial probability manipulation: the power to slightly alter the outcome of events if the users will power is strong enough.

Drawbacks: the alterations of the outcome will result in a new future where the universe creates a event to counter the power use, lowering the probability of someone's death in a scenario will increase the probability of death for someone else in a future scenario.

Xander never knew his sisters power, he was to young to understand what was written on his sisters file, and he would never get to find out.

Two nights after the family sat in their living room celebrating Xander's birthday, staring out the window at the beautiful city lights, the sky suddenly changed; clouds appeared out of nowhere, darkening the sky. The lights of the city seemed to dim as crackles of thunder and lightning could be heard in the distance. In the corner of the room, small spider webs fell from the ceiling down towards baby Amber. The silver silk glistened in Xander's eyes, yet his parents didn't notice it at all; they smiled and ate while talking about their beautiful family.

And then it happened: the clock struck 7:30 PM. It was now the exact time of Xander's birth. He was biologically 8 years of age, and that's when the pain kicked in—a small twitch in his limbs signifying where his power would be located. Light dizziness occurred as his brain adapted to his body's change. With each small movement of his finger, the air seemed to shift as if it obeyed his every command. The fog in his eyes began to clear, and that's when...

His eyes blurred again and everything darkened; his vision went red and distorted. The cabinet that held his sweets had turned into a demon made of sludge, and the book he held had grown a mouth on the cover that licked at his hand. His own father looked like a distorted horror creature, and when his mother noticed his distress and softly reached for him, he screamed as he saw what could only be described as the devil itself trying to grab him, or so he thought.

"GET AWAY FROM ME!" He screamed and stretched out his palm in fear. The entire scene seemed to happen in slow motion as the wind he wielded obeyed his command and followed the path he laid, raising each of the hairs on his arm as it made its journey, sharpening and moving faster as the clock had yet to tick by a second. When his vision cleared slightly, he saw his mother's outstretched hand barely grazing his shoulder as her head rolled across the floor to his father's feet. The soft smile she always wore was now etched onto her face, frozen in place, forever.
