Chapter 7 - feast of sover

Sonavr

A feast held by our family was important. Sonavr fairly believed it so.

It was of rare occurrence. But always welcomed as the food and pies and drinks were always delicious and at their best.

The special dish was crab which everyone adored, even iken. That grumble looking blacksmith did not like anything at all except crabs or maybe his forged swords and maces.

Sonavr really did not care at all about crabs or broth and even drinks that were crimson, freshly brewed from Special herbs and grapes found only in aravan forest.

He cared only about pies. Hot and sweet. Delicious little things.

Everyone was eating, at the foot of the table sat his father who looked tense for some reason. Iken sat on his side as usual, bearded and red tunic around him with one hand on his sword and the other on a drink.

Directly across from him sat jorath who was smiling. Accompanying him was brumen who kept glancing at him from time to time, obviously still in awe.

Sonavr and his mother Irene sat at the end of the table. Passing on food and drinks.

The silence was also there. No one dared to break it. It was unusual as sonavr remembered that father and uncle used to bicker and laugh at every feast. Now they sat, silently looking at each other, not saying a single word.

Sonavr gestured brumen with his eyes to break this long, unbearable silence.

Brumen cocked his head and smiled, turning to jemriah.

"I really appreciate you for having me on this feast. I know I am of distrubance but still I won't ruin your glorious night", brumen said smiling at jemriah.

Jemriah looked up at brumen. "Oh... It is alright. You are friend of my son. You are quite welcomed here".

Jemriah's tone seemed forced to sonavr.

He knew something was wrong but he could only stay silent. But why? Why couldn't he speak? It was his father after all, not some monster who would chew him up...

"Uncle jorath, if you don't mind me asking this but where did you get that Armour and why are you still wearing it even though you are eating?", sonavr redirected his focus on something he wanted to ask for a minute now.

Jorath smiled and looked at jemriah. "Your father won't allow it. He will shut me up if I tell you everything".

Sonavr tensed. Not only him but everyone on the table was. Sonavr could see clearly on everyone's expression.

"Some more frosikan anybody? Iken? Jorath?", Irene interjected.

Jorath and iken nodded.

What is going on? Are they hiding something from me?

Sonavr looked at brumen who just shrugged slightly.

"It is an armour made from dragon scales. That sword you see on his back is made from right leg of the very same creature", jemriah said smiling.

A smile that was forced. A lie.

Sonavr simply smiled.

If he can force it, I can too.

Uncle Jorath sipped on frosikan. Mother was simply looking at her food not eating. Iken was taking a long swig at his frosikan and eating crab leg simaltaneously. Father grew even more tense. Brumen eyed him and raised his eyebrows.

"I-I shall be back in a minute", sonavr said. "Not going anywhere far. Just out in village".

"Atleast finish your meal or your pies that you love so much", Irene said.

"In a moment, mother", sonavr said eyeing his father.

With that sonavr strode off with hurried footsteps out of Sover.

He kept walking and walking the muddy roads of aravan village. It was lonely and empty in night. In day, it was filled with bards and stalls.

What are they hiding? Why not just tell me?

Do they not trust me? I am their son, why?

He kept walking until he reached the outskirts of village. Many boulders were placed here. Small and round, some big in size, some wider.

He sat on one, looking over at the village.

The silence was peaceful, to him atleast.

I should probably ask uncle jorath to take me with him... Then I will eventually make my way towards the capital. Probably take brumen with me.

Am I reacting too strongly? Without even hearing my father's side... Should I confront him? He says he wants me to join the capital but he does everything against it...

Why so? Why stop me?

Who was that women on foot of aravan forest? She looked odd. She wore different clothes. She dressed almost like a princess.

"Your mother is getting worried, she thinks you might run away", brumen said. Startling sonavr.

"I just might have to. Seems like....the right thing?", sonavr said.

Brumen raised an eyebrow. "You are not going to do that. I know. I forced you to go into the heart of forest and you denied. Running away? No. You are not going to go along with that".

"I am tired, brumen", sonavr said. "Tired of not getting what I want".

Brumen laughed. "If u want something, work for it. If even work does not reward you then do the opposite. Do the things that you do not do usually. Take more risks and be free".

Sonavr nodded and smiled.

"Alright. We should do it".

"What now?"

Sonavr smiled. "We shall go to that forest in morning. When uncle jorath leaves. Father rides with him till sori harbour".

"What? Are we going to do that really?"

"Yes, we will".

Jemriah

"Told you. I told you should not have come wearing that blasphemy", jemriah said.

Jorath and jemriah both sat in a room. Small and made up of rock walls. Only few tapestry hung on either side.

Jorath smiled. "Brother. I will leave in morning. He found nothing. He just asked a question and you brushed it off by answering it. Although divergence would be a better word for it".

"What do you want? I fought with you in your wars. I abandoned father for my brothers. I am living in peace here, not even interfering or be a threat to others. So, I will ask you again this one time. What do you want?"

"Your peace was well deserved. But you chose wrong place. Aravan village has a tomb. I want it!", jorath said. "Or your son can have it".

"Leave my son out of this. He is not going to be a part of this folly".

"I am helping you brother. If and I am saying if, father have a smallest of hints that a tomb is here", jorath said. "He will rage war on these lands. Destroy the forest. Take the power from the tombs and attack kingdoms after kingdoms. A catastrophe, upon sumaka. That would not be pleasant ".

"That power rejects father. He saw to it. He can only give", jemriah said.

"He takes the gamble still. He thinks that if he found tombs or another tomb or another one. Maybe one of them will reward him with power", jorath said. "He is getting restless as the days passes. He grows angry to see his sons having powers that he himself found. He wants it too. He will take the gamble!"

Jemriah clearly saw apprehension, confusion and uncertainty.

Jemriah nodded. "Very well, we ride now".
