After making sure Oleander was settled in, I returned to the living room. I walked straight to the wine fridge, yanked out a beer can, popped it open, and chugged the entire thing in one go.
Once it was empty, I crushed the can in my palm and let it fall to the floor with a metallic clatter.
"You can come out now," I muttered, eyes narrowing toward the heavy drapes.
Tessa emerged slowly, now in her human form. She brushed her hair back and flicked it over one shoulder like she hadn't just tried to start a war.
"You always show up at the worst possible moment," she hissed. "Couldn't you have stayed out for one more damn minute? The deed should've been done."
"Seriously, Tess?" I growled. "What the hell were you thinking, shifting in her presence?"
"I didn't shift in front of her," she snapped. "And maybe I should've. Still, that doesn't change the fact that you always ruin everything."
