Inside the complex, Dahlia had just taken a gulp of milk when she heard Anita and choked on it.
"W–what? When did that happen?" She asked amid coughing and turned on the tap to wipe off the spilled milk with water.
Before Anita could answer, Finn's small voice came through the phone. "Anita, please take me inside."
"Of course," Anita replied gently, glancing toward Malachi.
He was now standing beside his car, eyes pinned on them.
Intimidated, she temporarily forgot she hadn't ended the call and held Finn's hand, leading her toward the complex.
The familiar sounds of footsteps and the elevator humming as they rode inside were oddly comforting, so Dahlia let the call continue.
She knew when the elevator stopped at their floor, when the doors opened, and when they walked down the hallway to the apartment.
The moment she heard the door open, she ended the call and stepped out to meet them.
"How was your day, baby beat?"
Finn looked up at her stiffly. "Fine."
