Chapter 1 - Symboli Pegasus - I'm Not Just Some Two-Bit Trainer!

Symboli Pegasus - I'm Not Just Some Two-Bit Trainer!

The Uma Musume

The girls with horse ears and tails were destined to run for glory. Many said that, for an Uma Musume, the most important thing was to run; not doing so was as if their very existence had a void they couldn't fill.

When Uma Musume races became a worldwide success, many families coveted having the best Uma Musume bloodlines. It was a way they combined the best of the best from various lineages, until giving birth to an Uma Musume who would be destined to become a legend and the dawn of a new era for the world.

Inevitably, many Uma Musume were crowned the best in their countries due to their exceptional physiques and abilities. For lineages like the Symboli, Satono, or Mejiro families, the most important thing was to create an exceptional Uma Musume in every generation.

But there was a problem with that.

As their name implied, Uma Musume could only be female, and only they had a truly high chance of giving birth to another Uma Musume, as human women had very low chances of doing so. Among those births, there were always failed attempts. Because, what happened when a powerful family, yearning for a prodigy Uma Musume to be born into their family, ended up with the baby being a boy?

Unlike the females, there was no male "Uma." So, every time a boy was born into these kinds of families, he was generally cast aside. He would still have comforts, but affection? There would always be that void: that baby couldn't reap or bring the same successes that an Uma Musume could. In a world that valued Uma Musume, those born in their shadows could almost never shine, even if they tried.

And perhaps these cruel twists of fate always ended as a bitter mockery, a clear reminder: life isn't fair, even if you're born into a wealthy family.

That was something Symboli Pegasus learned the hard way, and it led him to where he was now.

Location: Tokyo, Underground Canals

—"So, Kiritaka, what's the reason you called me so urgently?" said the youthful voice of a boy who looked about 17 or 18 years old.

He had messy brown hair, with two distinctive front strands shaped like inverted crescent moons. His clothes consisted of a simple black shirt, a brown leather jacket on top, black motorcycle pants with red diamond details, and black boots. His height was around 1.80 meters, and his figure was incredibly athletic: muscles in his arms and legs, but not exaggerated. Overall, it was a body made for strength and speed.

The boy's general appearance was that of a rebellious biker. His bearing, his gaze, even his nonchalant and slightly irritated attitude, gave him away.

The named Kiritaka exhaled pipe smoke, smoking calmly while watching the teenager standing cross-armed in front of him, already accustomed to the boy's haughty and demanding behavior.

—"Really, can't you be a little more patient, boy? Or have you forgotten who got you in here in the first place?" the elderly man said, hearing the younger boy click his tongue in annoyance. —"Pegasus, I thought after all these years you'd learn not to get into trouble."

The old man spoke in a severe tone, looking at the two-toned-haired boy, who just rolled his eyes with evident irritation.

—"Oh, here we go again with your sermons, old man. I told you: they asked for it. They tried to steal the money I earned fair and square," the brown-and-white-haired boy said, pointing his thumb at himself. —"Besides, it's their fault for abandoning that Uma Musume, thinking she had no talent; it backfired on them when I took her and made her win," Pegasus said with a haughty smile on his face, looking incredibly pleased with himself for putting those untalented little idiots in their place.

—"The point isn't what you did, brat; it's how you did it that bothers me," the old man raised his cane, pointing it at the boy's face, almost as if he was going to hit him, but didn't. —"You know this place is a secret. If you were going to beat them up, you should have brought their bodies here to recover; you know no one must find us," Kiritaka muttered angrily, gesturing with his arm for him to look around.

The young man did so, looking around at the all-too-familiar environment he'd seen since he ran away from home. The strong smell of alcohol and drugs was thick and filled his nose with the unpleasant odor. From the upper floor where they stood, they could easily see what was below: an Uma Musume race track.

To be precise, an illegal track.

Any racetrack featuring Uma Musume as the main attraction had to be registered with the URA to be suitable for the girls' races. That was something missing here. The track was neglected, as if it hadn't received maintenance in years; there were several patches of dirt where it would be really easy to trip and hit hard against the rocky ground.

What else could you expect? A track without talent or grace, for Uma Musume without talent or grace. It was cruelly fitting.

After all, not everyone can shine like stars in the night sky.

Pegasus frowned while shaking his head, not letting those thoughts return to his mind.

—"It doesn't matter, who would believe those idiots? They're nobodies, failed trainers who couldn't even pass the entrance exam for a regional Tracen academy," the brown-and-white-haired boy said, downplaying the matter.

—"That attitude of yours will really get you in trouble someday, brat," Kiritaka grumbled annoyed, but knowing he could do nothing to make the boy reflect.

Pegasus, in general, was truly rebellious and untamable; an attitude that was really rare nowadays, even in a place like this. An attitude that only wanted to dominate and impose its will on others, whether by fair means or foul.

Even though he had known Pegasus for over four years, Kiritaka really knew very little about the young man in question. The only thing easily deducible was that the boy was the son of an Uma Musume.

The male children of Uma Musume, although they didn't inherit their superhuman qualities, could inherit distinctive traits, like hair color or hairstyles. It was said that the more flamboyant and unusual a male's hair was, it was almost certain he was the son of some Uma Musume. However, that was the only special thing about them.

While their bodies, inherited from their mothers, were designed to be athletic by nature, they couldn't dream of achieving what an Uma Musume could aspire to. Not in their wildest dreams.

—"Anyway, who are the Uma Musume racing today, old man?" Pegasus asked, looking at the racetrack, watching as six Uma Musume lined up, waiting for the starting gate.

—"Wild Impact is the favorite to win this race. That girl has benefited well from your advice," the old man said, gripping his cane to watch the race about to begin.

These girls didn't have the talent to be considered even regional Uma Musume, let alone at the Central level. Like many here, they were outcasts, untalented; but even they wanted a bit of the glory that the great competitors had.

—"I just hope she does better than Crassy Candy. Her body couldn't handle my training; she got injured in the last race before retiring from the underground circuit," the brown-and-white-haired teenager said, crossing his arms. His tone was condescending, as if he hadn't expected anything, yet still ended up disappointed.

—"You know, boy, you should improve your attitude. Maybe no one here will fault you for it, but if you were anywhere else, they'd definitely look down on you," Kiritaka said, watching the boy roll his eyes like a child who didn't like being scolded. —"Really, your attitude reminds me so much of..."

A fleeting glimpse of a certain lineage, which used to have behavior similar to Pegasus, came to the old man's mind. Kiritaka had never asked about Pegasus's past, but now he really couldn't help but ask the question.

—"Boy, are you perhaps related to—"...

BANG!

Before the old man could finish, a loud bursting sound silenced him. It wasn't the sound of the starting gates that always signaled the race's beginning.

No, this was...

—"JAPAN NATIONAL POLICE! YOU'RE ALL UNDER ARREST!"

The doors of the underground racetrack burst open, revealing dozens of uniformed people in distinctive police gear, their badges shining under the dim lights of the dirty, old place.

PEAGASUS, RUN!

It was the last thing the boy heard before his legs started moving on their own, and he began to run.
